We use this strategy:

My son has learned that Daddy goes, "bye bye", when I leave for work.
"Bye bye" has come to mean - it is time to transition.

So when we are out shopping and he sees the vacuums or appliance
isles, we tell them "bye bye". This means its time to move on to
something else. Works most of the time.
