Diabetes
Hey, everyone. I was asked to post here as I have type two diabetes. I don't have to take insulin. Just have to take medicine, eat right, and exercise. Diabetes runs in my family. Both grandmothers, most aunts, and my mother have/had it. Both grandmothers lost a leg due to complications. I was young when that happened. Don't remember the details. But that scares me enough to where I really watch what I am doing. I have to take really good care of my feet too.
Sometimes, it gets really old. There is so much you have to remember to do. If you are sick, you still have to get up to take your reading, eat, take medicine, and take care of your feet. Even if you don't feel like eating, you have to eat.
There was a night in January 2007 where my heart was beating so hard, I could see it. I called my sister and she took me to the hospital. They had me stay overnight. They thought it was an anxiety attack, not a heart problem. But they kept me overnight because my blood sugar level was over 600. They pumped insulin in and monitored me all night long. That was kind of scary.
I took much better care for a long time, then backslid a bit recently. Back on track now. Doctor hollered at me and everything. Ok, ok she wins.
Well, just getting a thread started here. Hope other people will post. Oh, two last things. First, there is a recipe forum under the Message Boards. I posted some diabetic recipes. Here is the link: http://www.christianityoasis.com/Member ... m.php?f=57
Second, yeah I talk a lot about chocolate. I look at it sometimes, you know visit. Don't eat it. Just miss it.
God bless and protect everyone.

My resolution for today, next month, and years to come is to be further from the world and closer to the Word.

Hey Fluters!
Thanks so much for sharing your story! I was looking for some condensed info on Diabetes to post, but there is sooooo much out there! And, I know most would like to hear from a brother or sister who has been thru and is going thru it.
Diabetes has become very prevalent in many parts of the world. Now you can develop Type 2 Diabetes from certain medications, because of the way your body's metabolism adjusts to the meds. Diet and exercise I always read are a huge part to managing Type 2 Diabetes!
If anyone else feels led to share on this topic please do so!
Love you all,
Susi

Ha! I should read more of the forums!
I, too, have been diagnosed with diabetes.
They found it during my visit to the hospital last month.
They said I had it for a while. I didn't know that.
A simple blood test determined it.
They have me counting carbohydrates, eating healthier foods,
and I'm supose to be exercising regularly.
I was sent home on insulin. I gave myself shots in my stomach.
Then I started to get real stiff muscles. They called something like
lactose acidosis, or something. Now I'm just on the pill Metformin E. R.
As long as I do what I'm supose to do, I'm ok.
But when that pizza comes on Friday night, oh boy!
I lose it. The next day I feel aweful.
I've learned to recognize some of the symtoms of low or high
sugar levels. My fingers tips are sore and tired from the pokes.
What do you do when your sugar level is off?
Do you poke anywhere else other than the finger tips?
Thanks,
Timothy

Re: diabetes
Hey, Tim! Did you have any inkling you were diabetic? I was told I was hypoglycemic a few years before they said it was diabetes.
I poke in the same spot all the time. My finger has interesting colors. But yes, you can poke anywhere you bleed. A nurse once said not to squeeze. She said it messes up the sugar levels or something like that.
When your sugar level is off, you could take a walk for a half hour or so or exercise some other way. Exercise is a great way to reduce your levels. Might lose a few pounds in the process.
I am going to start diabetes counseling soon. I'll post tips as we go along.
Oh! Pizza is my downfall too!
God's blessings on your day!

You asked:
>Did you have any inkling you were diabetic? <
Only some excess tinkling.
But I thought that was just another possible problem.
Having read the phamplets given to me by the nurses while in the hospital,
I now realize I had some symtoms I just brushed off as getting old and
working the night shift and lack of sleep.
About 20 minutes after eating lunch (usually junk) I would get very tired.
Drinking coffee (with lots of sugar) and sports drinks (for energy) I would
be constantly rushing for the bathroom, unable to hold it.
If I didn't eat, skipping meal(s) I would get headache, drowsiness,
cold (sometimes sweaty too) and irritable.
None of this was consistant or with any predicability other than the coffee thing.
Thanks for the advice and insite, ljd and flutemusic.
