What troubles me....

Postby Guest » Sun Jul 11, 2010 8:32 pm

What troubles me is how we dress for church. I am sure part of this comes from my upbringing in a southern baptist church enviroment. Back then we wore "our Sunday best". In my opinion ,"best" is whatever you happen to have. No matter what it is. Do not misunderstand me. Just because you do not have a suit dont let that keep you away and you should be welcomed just as much.

Until recently I always wore a suit to church. Some friends and family asked me why don't I go casual like the majority of others. I answered with a question. Is there any place you go that is more important than Gods House? Why would I "dress up" to go to a wedding, dinner or some other special event but not "dress up" when I go into the HOLY PRESENCE?

For me wearing "my Sunday best" outwardly shows ultimate respect to GOD my creator.

I hope to hear a lot of feedback on this

I hear this often.

My opinion. Dress how you are comfortable and let others do the same.

If you don't feel right with out the suit, wear the suit. But the guy or gal next to you might not feel right in anything other than jeans, so allow it with full respect and love.

Cause in the end, that's what it's about, love.

Love ya! Good to see you posting.

Like Mike, I grew up in a Southern Bapt Church...where dress was very conservative. Few years ago we were called to a different church...more contemporary. First Sunday I was there, I kept looking for the pastor...he was not in the "usual" seat on the podium. Then at the proper time, this young man in slacks and a polo shirt bounced up and said "Good morning"....I turned to my son who had been there before...and said "who is that?" He said "Dr. Rogers"....well I was expecting a stuffy, old man in a suit and tie....to say "Good Morning....GAWD is in this place." LOL The young man, dressed so casually, did not meet my expectations. But I've become accustomed to his dress; however about once a month he might wear the suit & tie.

We have lots of students from the university in our congregation, so there are lots of walking shorts, T-shirts, flip-flops. But during the early service mostly the older generation attends, so there are more suits/ties. I usually wear dresses....sometimes a pants suit. (Always wear a hat....that is just part of ME...wear one whenever I leave the house.)

Ok...I've rambled enough. Guess what I am trying to say is this: dress in a way that you feel is acceptable to the Lord. And Mike, keep wearing that suit...my dad always wore one....I like to see men dressed up for worship service.

Here is something my pastor once said to me, it was at a time where I had a friend whom I was going to try and get to come to church with me, (never ended up happening due to getting a job and not being able to get to church) but I had asked the pastor about it first as he, is probably under the category crust punk or maybe gutter punk...and he has "foul" language tattooed on his knuckles. My pastors response to me worrying that he would be rejected for the way he looked or dressed..or smelled of alcohol? "Jesus wore a robe and sandals to church" and he went on to say that God did not care what our clothes were in chuch, he was just happy to have us there fellowshipping and worshipping. and i agree fully.

Regardless of clothing .....Does God not see the heart? We all get stuck behind "traditions" and then tend to make us one way or the other. I grew up very strict southern Baptist and now I am laid back. Once God showed me that it is what is in the heart is the most important thing then the looks became null.
Just my thoughts.

That is the same way I was brought up Mike. Grew up also Baptist. Where as I feel now one should dress as they feel comfortable at the same time I believe one should also show respect and wear what's appropriate in God's House. RC brought up really good verses on the subject.

My dad use to help run a bus Minstry and he would pick up some that their best wasn't what others in the Church would considered the best clothing to where to Church. Oh my the secret little gossips that went around. This one lady i remember her dress wasn't the cleanest, nor did it fit, was a bit to big on her, yet it was all she had. She came with a big smile on her face and her bible in hand ready to go to church. Many were nice to her, welcomed her, but sadly not many wanted to associate with her.

It's important to understand, it's not our outward appearance that God looks at but rather deep into our hearts. 1Sam.16:7, for the LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart.
