Ice Storm of 2009

Well as many of you know by now of the Ice Storm of 2009 has come and gone. For many of us that live here in the Bluegrass State those events will forever be etched in our minds.

Monday Night January 26 2009
It was a typical night and all seem to going on as normal or as normal as it gets. School had been canceled due to snow that we had received, so my eldest Rose of Sharon had decided to go along with me on my paper route. I had been keeping an eye on the forecast as I normally due so I will know what kind of night I have in front of me. They had been calling for sleet and freezing rain for our area, just the thought of that sent a chill up my spine. I really didn't want to go that night however I didn't know of much way out of it.

As we pull out it begins to rain, I call a co-worker and ask him what was the weather like there. He said it wasn't raining yet so I figured ok maybe it would be ok so I continue my journey. Now it is about 22 miles to where I pick up the papers, which is about 25 to 30 minutes worth of driving. When we arrived at our destination we stopped to gas up for the night. I noticed that the rain and water from the road had frozen to the blazer before it could run off of the vehicle in a slanted motion. Keeping in mind that it only takes us 30 minutes to travel that distance, there was already 2 inches of ice and slush on the road.

At midnight our papers had not arrived yet and the driver that brings our papers said that when he got to us he was turning around. It didn't take us long to decide that it was entirely too dangerous for us to be out on the roads. So we called off the paper delivery for the night, the only thing was is that we were 20 some miles from home could we even make it home safely?
My co-worker said we could bunk up with him for the night, so I could my wife Mother_Tres and told her what was going on so she wouldn't worry about us. It wasn't something we were all together happy with but we knew it was for the best. That's how our luck runs I hadn't had a night off in almost a year and my wife and I were 22 miles apart stranded in the middle of the worst Ice storm our state had ever received. I remember as we got into my co-workers home my eldest looked at me and said Daddy I want to go home
