that is a pretty interesting statement about "if not scripture I need to question..." because doesnt it say that in Romans 1:18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who suppress the truth in unrighteousness..." so the word of God is always used or distorted.

Re-reading what I wrote earlier , I see a correction/elaboration in order on couple of things .

I wrote
.. it not Scripture that I need to question ..

Meaning , it is not ... for , Scripture never changes ... God never changes , when He says something , it stands , whether He says it to us , through us , or through prophets or pastors , His Word never changes .
Now that brings me to the next issue , I wrote
...when I start to scratch my head , is when I need to get a second opinion - from the SAME person , just to see if they'd be able to repeat it !

It is not as much as to see if they "be able" to repeat , but rather IF they repeat .

Did you ever noticed , that our Lord NEVER repeated Himself ? Even when asked to explain a certain statement , parable or analogy , He always gave His explanation through yet another , "picture" , so to speak . And .. by the way He even said something about repetitious prayers and repeated rituals .
So , when someone blurts out some passage from Scripture just for the sake of blurting it out , and when asked , "Whatcha mean by that ? , Gives you the same exact wording ..word-for-word ,.. " I think it'll save us a lot of headache by simply saying "Whatt--evah !!"

In Christ , our Lord
