Abram's Radical Faith

Postby Lionhearted » Thu Mar 11, 2010 11:06 am

Good morning people, this was the topic from the radical faith chat on tuesday, this is for anyone who wasn't able to make it, or those who did and wanted to add more or take it further!!

In Genesis 12 & 13 we read that Abram and Lot found that if they stayed together, they would not be able to avoid overgrazing the land quarrelling over the limited water for their herds (13:6). Abram could have chosen the best land for himself: the plan around the Jordan River made lush by the river water; but, he gave Lot the choice.

Why do you think Abram let Lot choose the best land?

Because God had promised to made Abram into a great nation, so he already knew that he was going to get the best that God had to offer. Also, because God said He would curse those who cursed Abram; Abram was protecting Lot; he let Lot choose so that there would be no hard feelings toward Abram from Lot.

Gen 12: 2-3 And I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you [with abundant increase of favours] and make your name famous and distinguished, and you will be a blessing [dispensing good to others]. And I will bless those who bless you [who confer prosperity or happiness upon you] and curse him who curses or uses insolent language toward you; in you will all the families and kindred of the earth be blessed [and by you they will bless themselves].

Gen 13:10-14 -- And Lot looked and saw that everywhere the Jordan Valley was well watered. Before the Lord destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah, [it was all] like the garden of the Lord, like the land of Egypt, as you go to Zoar. Then Lot chose for himself all the Jordan Valley and [he] traveled east. So they separated. Abram dwelt in the land of Canaan, and Lot dwelt in the cities of the [Jordan] Valley and moved his tent as far as Sodom and dwelt there. But the men of Sodom were wicked and exceedingly great sinners against the Lord. The Lord said to Abram after Lot had left him, Lift up now your eyes and look from the place where you are, northward and southward and eastward and westward;

In this passage there is an interesting contrast between Lot and Abram, what is it?

And Lot looked and saw that everywhere
the Lord said to Abram lift up now your eyes and look
Lot looked and chose on his own; Abram waited to be told by the Lord to look up.

When Lot looked, what did he see and choose?

Lot saw the best of the best and that's what he chose.

What does this choice tell us about Lot's character/personality?

He TOOK the best rather than waiting for the best to be offered or given to him.
He didn't consider Abram OR God.

Abram looked up to his future ONLY when God commanded, and he saw the promised land - less fertile, but promised by God. Lot chose to settle in the rich cities of the plain, but Abram chose to wonder in the hills.

What does this tell us about Abram's character/personality?

Abram was willing to walk the hard road
