those rings are "us" .... our inner self or life; i'll put the pic of the tree again ... perhaps it will help others as it helped me to see more clearly:



everytime there is an crisis or negative event in our lives ... it effects our soul ... our inner man, and it shows in these "lines" just like in the life of the tree.

i think we put our walls up to protect against these "lines or marks" in the "circle" of our souls; to protect ourselves from further damage. but in the process of putting up walls and trying to keep out the bad, we also inadvertently keep out the good as well ... and that makes us sad.
