Baby goose

Postby Dora » Wed Jun 24, 2009 5:10 pm

wanted to share a pic of the baby goose that hatched out.
The momma isn't taking care of them so all but one died.
With this heat it doesn't take much. :(

He/she needs a name

Geese become very good guard dogs so you have to give it a good name like... Killer or Spike.

I named the goose I had for a short while Lucy. She wasn't raised by me and refused to go into any building and something got her :(

Aww that's so sad. :(

We have almost a dozen full grown geese.

It started with two. I purchased a few dozen chicken from the feed store for my hubby and also brought home 2geese to raise for fun.

It was fun. The first year they hatched a dozen babies. But they all drowned while we were on vacation. Then the next year a few more hatched out and they survived. That was fun watching them grow, except when they were grown we now have almost a dozen geese! They are noisy and keep getting out and coming into the front yard.

They aren't that mean. They hiss but turn and run quickly. I've been around some really mean geese before so I know what you mean by being mean.

They honk when someone pulls into the drive so they are like guard dogs. lol And many people are very afraid of them.

I haven't checked on the little fella today so I'm not sure if he made it. Yesterday his mother brought him to the house and he was to worn out from the long walk to make it back to the barn. When I took him back to the barn the mom didn't caudle him. So I'm not sure he'll be taken care of. The grandma took over caring for them, but when back to her own nest which won't hatch now as she abandoned it to care for the ones who had hatched from her daughters nest.

Geese just seem to make so many poor choices when choosing where to nest and how to care for their young.

We have fox that have long since taken our chickens but they don't mess with this flock of geese. Wondering if you had two geese if the preditor that caught your pet goose wouldn't have messed with her.

I felt bad for the poor thing because she would hang out with my fake ducks in the ornamental front pond. She didn't trust me and actually was at the neighbor's house for a while until I found her and brought her back. All well...

Now Guinea hens are the dumbest creatures ever. I had a bunch of chicks being raised by a hen and one by one they would squeeze out of a little hole then keep going deeper and deeper into the woods looking for mom. Couldn't take the noise they make anymore.

The best thing about the chickens and guineas where that I had no ticks anywhere near the house. They eat anything.
