THE RICHNESS
OF HUMILITY

She lived out spiritual humility, yet she had much on a human level to be proud of. As an author of over 70 books and a translator of many others into afrikaans, Annalou Marais had much cause to brag--but she was more concerned about honoring Christ than advancing herself. She worked behind the scenes of the Bible conference, doing a servant's tasks with a smiling face and a joyful heart. It would have been natural for her to desire, and even deserve, the spotlight. Instead, she quietly served, joyfully weeping as God worked in people's hearts. It was an impressive humility, because it was completely genuine.

I have heard it said, "It is amazing what can be accomplished when we don't care who gets the credit." This is certainly true of Christian service. Paul told the church at Corinth, "I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the increase. So then neither he who plants is anything, nor he who waters, but God who gives the increase." ( 1 Cor. 3:6-7). Paul had learned that great lesson of the servan't heart, as Annalou has learned--it's entirely about God. what we do is accomplished by His power and grace, and all the glory must go to Him.

It was a lesson in humility watching Annalou, and one that reminded me of the richness of serving God. __Bill Crowder

not speak to you as to
spiritual people but as to
carnal, as to babes in Christ.

2 I fed you with milk and
not with solid food; for
until now you were not able
to receive it, and even now
you are still not able; 3 for
you are still carnal. For
where there are envy, strife,
and divisions among you,
are you not carnal and
behaving like mere men?

4 For when one says, "I am
of Paul," and another, "I am
of Apollos," are you not
carnal?

5 Who then is Paul, and
who is Apollos, but
ministers through whom
you believed, as the Lord
gave to each one? 6 I
planted, Apollos watered,
but God gave the increase.

7 So then neither he who
plants is anything, nor he
who waters, but God who
gives the increase. 8 Now he
who plants and he who
waters are one, and each
one will receive his own
reward according to his
own labor. 9 For we are
God's fellow workers; you
are God's field, you are
God's building.

10 According to the grace
of God which was given to
me, as a wise master
builder I have laid the
foundation, and another
builds on it. But let each
one take heed how he
builds on it.

Apollos, a Jewish christian, was Paul's co-worker and an excellent
teacher (Acts 18:24). The immaturity of the Corinthian believers
(1 Cor. 3:1-3) caused divisions centering around Paul, Apollos, Peter,
and even Christ (1 Cor. 1:12). Apollos left Corinth, perhaps to help
heal the rift (1 Cor. 16:12). We see him co-laboring with Titus in
Crete and preparing to minister elsewhere (Titus 3:13). __SKT

Its the riches that we store up in heaven that counts, not fame, or recognition from other humans or whatever other material things most people seek after. Oh what an honor it is to be a servant of the Most High God. And to serve God, we must become servants to others. NOT a task most take pleasure in. But Jesus has called us to put aside our pride and other icky fleshly desires and stoop down and serve others. And to want nothing in return, for our reward is in heaven.

James 4:6 God resisteth the proud, but giveth Grace unto the humble.
