Matthew 12:31-32
Hi Guys So i was reading Matthew 12:31-32, and it was talking about the eternal sin, the one sin that cannot be forgiven. But I don't understand what the eternal sin is. Can anyone help me understand this bible passage?
Matthew 12:31-32 (NIV)
And so I tell you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven menm but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven. Anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but anyone who speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come.

Re: Matthew 12:31-32
Hi pineapple =) From the studies I have read here, this is what I think the eternal sin is. When someone is filled with the Holy Spirit, they are changed. They have the strength to follow God and resist the temtations of the world. If someone who is filled with the Holy Spirit falls away from their salvation and goes back to their old sin, that cannot be forgiven. Of course , falling away is different from stumbling. If you fall into that sin once, but you do not fall away and you get back up to walk the eternal path, that will be forgiven. But if you gall away forever, you lose your salvation. For if someone who has tasted the gift of the Holy Spirit falls away, that can not be forgiven. It is better for that person to have never found salvation, for to fall away and then come back is like crucifying the Son of God a second time, putting him to an open shame.

That is a great question and looking foward to more views of others and thank you RepentionofIgnorence for sharing also.
I had often wondered as well what does the eternal unforgivable sin is to, usually the ones who ask are the ones who are searching for redemtion forgiveness and unconditional love and trying to stay on the right path.
I can't help but think of that story in the bible that I believe would be the perfect example of blasphemy. Remember at the last supper where Jesus was serving communion with his 12 disciples and Jesus said one of you is going to betray me and Peter in deep consern asked Jesus is it I who will betray you and we know how that story goes, Jesus made it clear that it wasn't Peter, but he told Peter how Peter was going to deny Jesus three times before the roster crows (usually rosters crow early morning) anyway, and we know Jesus told Peter the answer without disclosing who was going to betray him and that was Judas. Judas had followed Jesus those entire three years as an eye wittness to all what the bible had said to be fullfilled by the one and that is Jesus. Judas got to experience the love of Jesus and all that Jesus did and taught daily yet Judas with a sober mind sold Jesus out for pieces of silver, Judas betrayed an innocent person. That is blasphemy, betrayal with a sober mind flat out Judas knew he was doing. It is a good story to look into when we as saved by Jesus by our asking him in our heart and forgiveness of sin, the life of Peter is a good one to relate to as far as the day Peter believed and from that point on grew and in that process had fallen down alot on his way to growing up in the faith and love of Jesus. There is a big difference between a sheep that gets stuck in the mud time to time vs a wolf that puts on sheep's clothing that does it for personal gain to the extreme that wounds and inflict grief on the Holy Spirit's calling of love for others.
I hope this helped some.

Re: Matthew 12:31-32
Hello again =) that is a great example of blasphemy, and I think I have another one. Say that someone used to smoke, which would lead to other sins. Over time they feel guilty and they finally become christian and accept Jesus Christ into their life. The Holy Spirit gives that person the gift of ministry. They build their own church and start to preach the word. they stumble a little, but they get back up and continue to preach. A few years later, they fall back into their old habits and completely reject their faith. They stop preaching, so their gift is not being used to help anyone else. This is unforgivable because the gift of salvation and of ministry has been rejected. You cannot fully fall back into the world and reject your calling, because many are called but few are chosen. If you reject that gift, but the you try to obtain it again, it's almost like crucifying the son of God again, which is unforgivable.

Thank you for sharing once more, the way I see those who smoke and have Jesus in their heart, they will be next to Jesus when they pass away, they will just get there sooner! LOL!!!! And if they quit smoking for good, that won't make them live forever.
Yes smoking is unhealthy, so is eating junk food and abusing the body to become over waight. Another thing that is unhealthy is not eating and starving the body. Some over obsess with excersize and wreck their body, while others dont excersize at all and that wrecks their body, some verbally abuse, some physically abuse, some sexually abuse we see it posted here all over the forums of our fallen nature and many of us calling on Jesus for help and help from eachother. Some abuse spiritually using the scriptures to manipulate or control or condemn or ever just abuse it by saying everyone is going to heaven or everyone is going to hell, it is clear we all need a savior. Jesus is more conserned of the root issue that causes our disfunctions, and Jesus is into the saving not condemning, bad habits are not what takes away our salvation. There isn't a person alive who doesn't have a bad habbit we all have fallen short of the glory of God. Like I said there is a difference between those who pick up bad habbits and those who just enjoy inflicting grief on others turning their back on the saving grace of God.
It is good to be as clean physically from all the temptations the world has to offer, but for those still walking it out, there is unconditional love that will pull them through. It is God's plan for his own to win and He payed the price so it is He who is the final judge of all things. I do appreaciate that verse that Jesus spoke, take the log out of thine own eye before taking a speck out of thine brotherens eye. That verse helps me to learn I don't have the waight of the world on my shoulders to correct them, that is the Holy Spirit's job while I dont have to carry the waight of the judgement of others who are fallen to for their judgement of right and wrong on me, I can lean on the Holy Spirit for that. It is truly freedom in Christ. Whom the son has set free is free indeed! Even free from others.
I hope this helped out some.

Hey rockofages =) I know that smoking is not a sin in itsekf, but sometimes things like smoking and drinking can lead to actual sin. I honestly don't know where to stand on various ussues such as smoking and drinking, but I agree there are worse things than that. Drugs can dull the mind and cause you to do irrational things. So drinking and smoking is not the sin, it is the actaul thing you do because of it that is the sin.

Everyone is on their level of faith walk with Jesus. Jesus is the one who paid it all, he is the one we lean on in our weaknesses and He is the one who provides us with strength to overcome. Some are delievered over night, while others it is a process. As far as blasphemy is conserned, it is rejecting salvation and His love for us becaus while we were yet sinners Christ died for us, Romans 5:8.

Re: Matthew 12:31-32
I am not here to condemn anyone who enjoys these habits, for there is too much ammo agaisnt me, and any word I say against someone would be empty. A lot of habits can be used as tools by the devil, but as long as they do not come to the point of rejecting their faith, than I guess it is alright. My habit was never built on a good or innocent foundation, so I cannot plead the same testimony. If I sound like I am condeming someone, then tell me where my words fail me. I will always have the irge urge not only to do the sin which I call habit, but to defend it. If I was ignorant of everything else except Jesus Christ, God, and the Holy Spirit, I would be the happiest person in the world, for my soul would be free of everything that could send me to an early grave. Forgive my mistakes, I am writing this on a phone XD

Re: Matthew 12:31-32
Jesus taught that every kind of sin can be forgiven except blasphemy against the Holy Spirit.
Blasphemy against the Holy Spirit means attributing the work of the Holy Spirit to that of Satan. The Pharisees knew that Jesus driving out demons was the work of a Divine Spirit, they knew the devil wouldn't heal the blind and mute or raise people from the dead or do anything good for people. Their rejection of the Holy Spirit and calling it the work of Satan was deliberate and informed, they didn't just make a mistake out of ignorance. It was intentional and motivated by the evil in their hearts that Jesus talks about (Matt 15:19, Mark 7:21)
Sometimes Christians fear that they have committed blasphemy against the Holy Spirit. If you worry that you have done it, you show by fear and repentance that you haven't. If you had done it, you wouldn't be worrying about it. You wouldn't care.
