Why Have You Forsaken Me? –Netchaplain
“And about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, "Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?" that is, "My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me" (Mat 27:46; Mar 15:34)?
Did the Father momentarily forsake Christ on the Cross or was it just Christ, in His humanity, feeling forsaken by Him? I believe Christ, in His humanity, felt forsaken by the Father, much like in His humanity, Christ momentarily desired to avoid the “cup” which He was required to endure (Mat 26:39, 42).
Just as Christ recovered from desiring to avoid the “cup” by saying, “O My Father, if this cup cannot pass away from Me unless I drink it, Your will be done” (Mat 26:42), He also realized the necessity of the Cross by saying, “Father, into Your hands I commit My spirit” (Luke 23:46), which is indicative that the Father was still with Him. Let’s also not forget that Christ was still the Word of God while He was on earth, which means He was and is omnipresent, in heaven and earth simultaneously. “No one has ascended to heaven but He who came down from heaven, that is, the Son of Man who is in heaven” (John 3:13 NKJV, KJV). Also, when considering this passage, “And He who sent Me is with Me. The Father has not left Me alone . . . .” (John 8:29), one can safely conclude that Their union is always permanent. I’ve heard it said that the Father would not look at Christ at this time because all the sin in the world was on Him. I still fail to locate Scriptural support for this thought but I have found conflicting Scripture:
“The eyes of the LORD [are] in every place, Keeping watch on the evil and the good” (Pro 15:3).
To me, the significance of this issue reveals the desires of Christ and the Father to relate to us, to the degree that Christ became as one of us, in human form and nature. “For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin” (Hbr 4:15).
The importance of place in these “earthen vessels” is to cause us to always depend on God and not ourselves, for all things at all times. “But we have this treasure in earthen vessels that the excellence of the power may be of God and not of us” (2Cr 4:7). “And He said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness" (2Cr 12:9).
“Not by might, nor by power, but by My Spirit, saith the LORD of hosts” (Zec 4:6).
It has been well said that “His Blood procures pardon for our sin and His Cross procures power over our sin (the indwelling old man or nature).”
Ultimately, this teaches us to depend, not on our works, but on His atonement (Rom 5:11) and propitiation (Rom 3:25; 1Jo 2:2, 4:10).

Hi,
you wrote “And about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, "Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?" that is, "My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me" (Mat 27:46; Mar 15:34)?
When I read this, i see our Lord in so much pain and suffering, he might be in a way saying "Father i did all that you told me to do, but i really can't take any more".
Shortly after Jesus Cried out Father why have you forsaken me, he breathed his last breath. Mark 15:37 And Jesus cried out with a loud voice, and breathed his last.

Hello Netchaplain, ServeGod and Everyone
God bless you this day.
Thank you for the blessed sharing. God is so very Good!!!
I agree, God The Father did not turn away from Jesus during this time.
There is a beautiful Study on this site that is quite enlightening and I encourage all to read: http://www.christianityoasis.com/Keyword/Forsaken.htm
Jesus not only paid the punishment required for all sin debt, but He also fulfilled prophecy, while fulfilling the sin debt. Throughout Psalm 22, David prophesied of Jesus and His death on the cross. Many other prophets of God also prophesied of Christ Jesus in the Old Testament, as well.
Psalm 22:1 My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? why art thou so far from helping me, and from the words of my roaring?
Guilt cannot be transferred. However, the punishment for guilt can be transferred, as was the case of our Lord Jesus. He was and is sinless.
I, too, have heard and read sermons from God loving and God fearing men, saying that Jesus became sin, therefore since God hates sin, He had to turn His back to Jesus. I think we can often misunderstand scripture. I know I often do. But, The Holy Spirit will lead us into all truth. Thank You Holy Spirit \o/ \o/ \o/
II Corinthians 5:21 For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.
The above scripture can be challenging to understand. But, as with all scripture, we need to be led by The Holy Spirit and read all scripture to get the fullness of it. Presently, we do see through a glass darkly, and Thank You Lord for helping us to understand.
I'll give an example: A man is found guilty by a court of law for a particular crime and is sent to prison. However, later, it is found that the man that has been paying the punishment for the crime, is innocent, when the real guilty party is caught in the commission of another crime. The first man was never guilty of the crime, but he did pay the price and endured the punishment.
So too, with Christ Jesus. He was never guilty of sin, He was and is forever sinless, but He paid the ultimate price and punishment for the sins of the world.
Hebrews 13:8 Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and today, and for ever.
God The Father and God The Son are One...John 10:30 I and My Father are one.
Isaiah chapters 42 and 43, are also blessed food on this topic.
Isaiah 43:11 I, even I, am the Lord; and beside me there is no saviour.
God The Father did not turn His back on Jesus.
God bless and keep you.
In Christ Jesus' love,
Sister Mack

Hi Sister Mack and thanks for your input! Though the sins of one in Christ are forgiven, sin itself is not forgiven but condemned and will eventually be completely separated from the Christian.
Since Christ is the only atonement and propitiation for our sins, righteousness, as shown in II Corinthians 5:21 as you posted, is imputed to us and not imparted. This is why is is said that we are "made the righteousness of God in Him" here and in 1Cr 1:30 which states, "But of Him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us . . . righteousness."
This is also how Christ's righteousness is not fulfilled by us but is "fulfilled in us" (Rom 8:4).
The imputation of Christ's righteousness also includes holiness, justification and sanctification.
The Lord's Blessings To You!

The Father was always with the son.
you wrote: “And He who sent Me is with Me.
I don't think God looks away, sometimes even in todays world, where much suffering, death and injustice occur many say where is God? He is with us, and he is there.
Psalm 22:24 For he has not despised nor abhorred the affliction of the afflicated; Nor has he hidden his face from him; but when he cried to him, he heard.
