~ Peace for All Times ~
Matthew 28:16-20
16 Then the eleven disciples went away into Galilee, into a mountain where Jesus had appointed them.
17 And when they saw him, they worshipped him: but some doubted.
18 And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.
19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:
20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.
Jesus Said, "I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world." John 16:33 (NIV)
The day started out crisp and cool - a nice reprive from late summer's blistering heat. It was the calm before the storm on September 11, 2001. I had a millino errands to run, and my husband, an airplane pilot, was on his way to the airport. It seemed a normal day - until the report of breaking news.
Panic mingled with frustration within me as I sank into a family-room chair and watched the twin towers crumble to the ground. My sense of safety and security evaporated.
Not only was our country under attack; the weapon of choice was the type of airplane my husband flew for a living. Now all airlines were grounded, the future unknown.
I had two concerns warring within me - a desire for safety for all pilots and concern about my husband's job. Before despair could consume me, I sat down to read God's word. The verse above spoke to me loudly and clearly, reminding me that God in Christ has overcome the world. And if God has overcome the world, God could certainly take care of us. In times of despair, God offers us peace.
Prayer:Dear God of peace, we thank you for your powerful love that can overcome our deepest despair. Hold us close to your heart always. Amen
