OUR DAILY BREAD : FALSE PREDICTIONS
July 8
Thursday
READ:
Matthew 24:36-44

Tell us, when will these
things be? And what
will be the sign of Your
coming, and of the end
of the age?
__Matthew 24:3

News that a solar eclipse would take place on July 22, 2009, brought an alarming prediction. It was predicted that the eclipse would sufficiently affect gravitational pull, causing tectonic plates to "pop a seam," resulting in a sizable earthquake and a subsequent devastating tsunami in Japan. The US Geological Survey responded that no scientists "have ever predicted a major earthquake. They do not know how, and they do not expect to know how, anytime in the foreseeable future."
There have also been many false predictions about the date of Christ's second coming-despite our Lord's emphatic words: "But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, but My Father only" (Matt. 24:36). Christ told His followers that instead of trying to predict the date of His return, they should "watch (v.42) and "be ready" (v.44).
Peter warned, "The day of the Lord will come like a thief." Then he added: "What kind of people ought you to be? You ought to live holy and godly lives" (2 Peter 3:10-11 NIV).
Striving to live for God--that's what Jesus wants us to focus our energy on while we wait for that "blessed hope and glorious appearing of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ" (Titus 2:13). __C. P. Hia

***************Today's Bible Reading __ Matthew 24:36-44*********
36 But of that day and hour
no one knows, not even the
angels of heaven, but My
Father only. 37 But as the
days of Noah were, so also
will the coming of the Son
of Man be. 38 For as in the
days before the flood, they
were eating and drinking,
marrying and giving in
marriage, until the day that
Noah entered the ark, 39 and
did not know until the flood
came and took them all
away, so also will the
coming of the Son of Man
be. 40 Then two men will be
in the field: one will be
taken and the other left.
41 Two women will be
grinding at the miill: one
will be taken and the other
left. 42 Watch therefore, for
you do not know what hour
your Lord is coming. 43 But
know this, that if the master
of the house had known
what hour the thief would
come, he would have
watched and not allowed
his house to be broken into.
44 Therefore you also be
ready, for the son of Man is
coming at an hour you do
not expect.

Today's Bible reading is a critical portion of what is often called the
"Olivet Discourse." Presented on the Mount of Olives during the
week preceding the events of His passion, Christ delivered a message
that was His most apocalyptic, speaking much of things to come. It
was also His last public teaching event, with the remainder of His
instructions being given privately to the disciples (most notably in the
Upper Room Discourse of John 13_16). __BILL CROWDER
