SMOKE AFTER CHURCH
On the front steps of church with my brother,
sharring thoughts that I could with no other.
A bit early we left the congragation,
hinting, just a little, at our desparation.
We light one up, and exhale deeply,
in between breaths we yawn silent and sleepily.
As the last of the choir songs are sung,
the haze continues to fill our lungs.
The sounds of the service had reached our ears,
but hellfire and damnation we do not fear.
There was a time when the truth we sought,
and not into a single sin we bought.
But our wills had weakened, as they do, over the years,
and no one at this place had ever tried to be near.
We are now too tired to search;
tired of being lectured on how we fall,
together as brothers we try to exhale it all,
as we silently smoke, after church.
sharring thoughts that I could with no other.
