~ Stay Awake ~

"Keep awake...for you know neither the day nor the hour." Matthew 25:13 (NRSV)
The first day of the work week had not gotten off to a good start. First I had to go back home to collect a bag that I had forgotten. Then I left the bag behind on the luggage rack in the train. I had to go back for it again, and this time I had to explain to the ticket inspector and the driver what had happened. I know I am not the only one to whom these kinds of things happen, especially after a long weekend. Often we sleep on the go, automatically move in the necessary direction, and flat along the usual river of our life.
Our relationship with God can become like this as well. We go to church on Sundays purely out of habit. We neither change nor grow spiritually. We are happy with the way things are. We put off reading the Bible until later, or talking about out faith to a nonbeliever unit next week or next month, or taking on a new way of ministry until next year. It is as if we have become frozen in our faith. But God calls us to be always ready for Christ's coming.
God calls us to pray without ceasing and to act and live each day as if it were our last. We cannot answer that call casually or haphazardly. A life of true faith requires committed, intentional walking with Jesus Christ and following his footsteps.
Prayer: Dear Lord, help us to keep awake and to make sure that we always have enough oil in our lamps to be ready to meet you. Amen.
