Down the Road
Chapter Twelve

Kaye Leigh went up to her room when they got back to the hotel. Jeff and Becki went into the restaurant to have a drink and try to figure out what to do.

"Why would she believe all of this?" Jeff said. "Doesn't she know how much I love her?" He put his head in his hands.

"Of course she knows Jeff." She replied. "But it's hard for her to think rationally right now. She's looking at pictures and receipts that we can't prove yet are false, she's been through this with Sam and she's going to shut herself off to anything that she thinks is going to hurt her. Kaye Leigh loves you Jeff never doubt that even with everything you know she is going to do. She really feels threatened by you right now.

She thinks you are going to hurt her the exact same way Sam did. She is going to push you away, build her walls up, say things she does not mean, tell you she wants a divorce repeatedly, and run if given the chance. Just be prepared, and with everyone's help, you will get through it. Then you will have to deal with the fact that when it is proven you did not have an affair she is going to hate herself for doubting you and putting you through all this stuff. She will think that she doesn't deserve you." Becki finished. Jeff shook his head.

"Just keep reminding me of all of that when she frustrates me to no end." He said laughing.

"I will." She assured him.

Jeff decided that he was going to go try to talk to Kaye Leigh, knocking on her door he said

"Kaye Leigh?" After a few minutes, she opened the door.

"What do you want Jeff?" she asked harshly. Kaye Leigh had not given into the tears that she had been fighting all day, and she did not want to do it in front of him.

He looked into her eyes and what he saw broke his heart.

"Can we please talk Kaye Leigh?" he asked.

"Why are you going to tell me the truth now?" she replied.

"Kaye Leigh please believe me, trust me I would never hurt you like this, it breaks my heart to see you like this. I love you so much Kaye Leigh you've got to know that." He pleaded with her. When she looked at him all the emotions that she had been holding back broke free.

Jeff went into the room, shut the door, and tried to take Kaye Leigh in his arms but she pushed him away. Finally, he grabbed her, let her struggle against him for a few minutes, then held her and let her cry all her hurt out.

"I am so sorry that you're going through all of this Kaye Leigh. I will find a way to prove that I have been nothing but faithful to you." He said as he held her tightly.

She looked up at him and asked, "Why would someone do this to us?" She searched his eyes for answers.

"I have no idea Kaye Leigh, I don't know if it's you or me they are intending to hurt." He said quietly.

Kaye Leigh put her head on his shoulder, she wanted to push him away and run, but she could not. She knew that she would hate herself later but she could not let him go yet.

"Kiss me Jeff." She said. Jeff looked at her then slowly brought his lips to hers. Kaye Leigh clung to him wanting to forget everything that had happened.

"Kaye Leigh I love you so much." He said against her lips. She pushed back from him, took his hand, and led him into the bedroom. As much as she was hurt, she needed him.

Kaye Leigh fell asleep with Jeff's arms around her. He brushed some hair away from her face, and pulled her closer. He did not want to let her go, afraid that he would lose her forever. He was furious with her that she hadn't listened to him about Morgan and Sam, but he wasn't going to say anything because she would say it was because he didn't want to get caught, and he had a feeling that all of this would have happened without the meeting.

The phone rang; Jeff grabbed it before it could wake up Kaye Leigh, trying not to disturb her.

"Hello?" he said quietly.

"Jeff?" Becki asked stunned.

"Yeah, Kaye Leigh's asleep right now." He replied.

"Ok I was just going to see if she wanted to go shopping. Whenever you guys are ready just give me a call ok?" she said.

"We'll do that." He said and hung up.

Kaye Leigh rolled over.

"Jeff?" she said sleepily.

"I'm here." He said leaning over her. She opened her eyes, wrapped her arms around him, pulled him closer, and kissed him. They woke up again around six.

Kaye Leigh was in the shower when Jeff called Becki and told her to meet them in the lobby in an hour. He walked to the bathroom door and watched Kaye Leigh. She was wrapped in a towel, putting on her make-up and fixing her hair.

"You're so beautiful Kaye Leigh." He said smiling at her.

"Thank you Jeff." She replied looking at him in the mirror. There was still a sadness in her eyes that only the truth would take away, Jeff was determined to find out who was behind this and why.

When she left the bathroom, he said "Thank you for letting me be with you this afternoon." She smiled and hugged him.

"No matter what Jeff, I love you and always will even when we're apart." She said.

"Kaye Leigh please don't say when we're apart." He whispered fighting tears. Kaye Leigh hugged him tighter, kissed him, and then let him go so that she could go get her clothes. She put on a sundress and sandals.

They met Becki in the lobby and the three of them went out for the evening. When they got to the restaurant, Kaye Leigh went to use the bathroom, and while she was gone, Jeff told Becki everything that happened. When Kaye Leigh returned, a waitress led them to a table.

Morgan and Sam had seen them when they were going to their table.

"They don't look really happy do they?" Morgan said laughing.

"You set this all up didn't you?" Sam asked.

"Jeff and I wanted her to find out that we we're having an affair; I love him and want to be with him. I did think that you might want to comfort her." She said smiling.

"Why do you hate her so much?" he asked. Morgan laughed.

"I just love Jeff that's all Sam." She replied.

"You've always hated her." He stated.

"Can I get you something to drink while you look over the menu?" a waiter asked.

"I'll take an iced tea please." Kaye Leigh said.

"Long Island?" the waiter asked.

"No, just plain." She said quickly. Jeff and Becki laughed. He left to get their drinks.

"I was extremely stupid last night, drinking has never gotten anyone anywhere." Kaye Leigh said shaking her head.

"We agree." Becki and Jeff said together. Jeff took Kaye Leigh's hand.

"Dance with me Kaye Leigh." He said standing up. Kaye Leigh looked at him then stood up and let him lead her to the dance floor.

He wrapped his arms around her and held her close, he leaned his head against hers and said, "I love you Kaye Leigh."

He felt her hug him tighter and heard her say "I love you too Jeff." They danced two dances then went to sit back down.

"Excuse me but could you give a message to that lady over there at the other table for us?" Sam asked the waitress. She looked to where he was pointing.

"Sure." She said.

"Tell her that Sam and Morgan need to see her it's urgent. Please make sure the other two at the table don't hear you." He said.

"No problem." She said and left. The waitress assumed he meant the one who was not with the man.

"You two look great together you know that right?" Becki said. When Becki looked at Kaye Leigh, she noticed that Kaye Leigh had tears in her eyes. Another waitress had come over, bent down, and whispered something in Becki's ear.

"What was that all about?" Jeff asked.

"Nothing important, if you will excuse me I need to use the restroom." She said. Kaye Leigh was not paying attention, but Jeff thought Becki was hiding something. Becki smiled at them as she left the table.

When Becki was sure, she was out of sight of Jeff and Kaye Leigh she headed straight for Morgan's table.

"What are you two up to?" she demanded.

"Who are you?" Morgan asked.

"I think she is another one of Jeff's mistress's." Sam said looking at Becki.

Becki glared at them.

"Where's Kaye Leigh?" Morgan asked.

"If either of you go anywhere near her, you will be sorry." Becki said.

"Are you threatening me?" Morgan said standing up. Becki laughed at her.

"No it's a promise you old hag." She said furiously.

"Where is Kaye Leigh? Apparently I will have to go get her myself." Morgan said trying to go past Becki.

Before Morgan knew what happened, Becki hit her and knocked her backwards where she fell onto the table, which was sent crashing to the floor. The sound of breaking dishes, and silverware hitting the floor surrounded them. A couple that was close by screamed.

Kaye Leigh and Jeff heard the crash and the screaming. They were looking around when Kaye Leigh caught a glimpse of Becki.

"What is Becki doing?" she asked Jeff. They went over to see what was going on.

Kaye Leigh stopped in her tracks when she seen Sam and Morgan, feeling as though someone knocked the breath out of her.

"Becki what are you doing?" she asked when she regained her composure. Becki looked at her.

"I told this old hag that if she attempted to go near you she'd be sorry, apparently she thought I was kidding." Becki said glaring at Morgan.

Sam looked at Jeff and smiled.

"I'm surprised that you have the nerve to face me since you're having an affair with my wife." Sam said standing up.

"Sam don't be an idiot." Kaye Leigh said. Jeff stepped between her and Sam.

Jeff glared at him. "I haven't seen you're wife before today." Jeff started.

"How can you say that Jeff?" Morgan cried from the floor.

"Shut up!" Becki yelled. Jeff ignored both of them, continuing to stare at Sam.

"I would never risk losing Kaye Leigh for something like that." Jeff said waving toward Morgan.

"You said you loved me Jeff, you said that you were going to divorce her and we would get married and live with the kids at Silver Creek." Morgan said.

Kaye Leigh felt like she was going to be sick.

"Don't believe a word she says." Becki said to Kaye Leigh.

"What I ought to do is beat the two of you until you decide to tell the truth!" Jeff said angrily taking a step towards Sam.

"Jeff don't!" Kaye Leigh yelled grabbing his arm.

Sam looked at Kaye Leigh, he wanted to take her in his arms, but he had to wait.

"You don't believe his lies do you Kaye Leigh? Or did he beat you into it?" Sam asked. Kaye Leigh laughed.

"You don't really think that I would allow someone else to hit me do you Sam? I think that you hitting me was certainly enough for my lifetime." She said.

"Morgan if you move again I will hit you, you've been warned." Becki said as Morgan tried to get up.

"Come on guys lets get out of here." Kaye Leigh said grabbing both of their arms.

"I'll be waiting for you to realize the truth Kaye Leigh, for you to remember that it's me you really love!" Sam yelled. Jeff turned around and Becki grabbed his arm.

They decided to walk back to the hotel to try to calm down.

"How's your hand?" Jeff asked.

"A little sore, I shouldn't have hit her the first time, but I wanted to do it again." Becki replied.

"Neither of them is worth going to jail over." Kaye Leigh said.

"Their not worth throwing away your marriage either Kaye Leigh." Becki said.

"Our marriage isn't over." Jeff said. Kaye Leigh laughed. "What's so funny?" He asked.

"You're living in a fantasy world; you've been in it so long that apparently you can't tell reality from fantasy." She said shaking her head.

"You're giving up on our marriage Kaye Leigh?" he asked.

"You gave up on it the minute you kissed Morgan; you stopped being my husband the minute you got into bed with her." Kaye Leigh said. Jeff had stopped walking but Kaye Leigh went into the hotel and did not stop at the elevator but took the stairs, she needed some time alone, seeing Sam and Morgan brought everything back.
