Down the Road
Chapter Eighteen

The five of them had decided to go out for dinner since the kids were not home. Kaye Leigh and Jeff were upstairs getting ready.

"Let's just stay here, lock the door, and never leave." Kaye Leigh said hugging him.

"We can't hide from our problems Kaye Leigh." He said kissing her.

"We could if you let us." She said smiling.

"Leave your hair down tonight." He said.

Kaye Leigh and Becki were the last ones downstairs, as they were coming down Jon said, "You two look beautiful tonight."

"Thanks." They replied.

"Your chariot waits." Jeff said opening the door.

He opened the truck door for Kaye Leigh and helped her in. Curtis helped Becki in also, and then they headed into town. When they got to the restaurant Jeff led them inside. When they were seated, Kaye Leigh noticed Morgan.

"Look Morgan's having dinner alone, should we invite her over?" Kaye Leigh said.

"You're kidding right?" Jeff said.

"Of course but I am going to have a chat with her." She said getting up.

"Kaye Leigh don't!" Jeff said.

"Don't worry; I'm just going to talk to her." She said.

Kaye Leigh went to Morgan's table and sat down.

"Kaye Leigh what a surprise." Morgan said smiling.

"Is it really a surprise Morgan or were you hoping to run into me?" Kaye Leigh said.

"It's a surprise really." Morgan said.

"What brings you to town?" Kaye Leigh asked.

"Jeff of course." Morgan said.

"He's right over there." She said pointing to him. "If you're having an affair and I know about it then why is he with me?"

"He wants us both right now Kaye Leigh, but last night he was telling me that he loved me and he brought me a present. I wanted him to stay but he said that he couldn't because there was too much going on at your house." Morgan said.

Kaye Leigh's stomach turned. "Where did you and Jeff meet?" she asked.

"The Monday after you and I met, I had stayed in town because I didn't want to go back home and be ignored by my husband. I ran into Jeff while he was going to get his mail. I ran into you shortly after that remember? Anyway, we talked, met for lunch a few times, and we started having an affair." Morgan said. "It really happened fast, I never meant for it to happen, and I didn't want to hurt you, but I can't let him go Kaye Leigh. You're not letting him go very easily."

"It's more like he isn't letting go of me very easily." She said.

"Really, when he gave me this last night I assumed differently." Morgan said pulling the wedding ring and engagement ring out of her purse.

"Give those to me now." Kaye Leigh said.

"Sorry Kaye Leigh but Jeff wants me to have them."

Kaye Leigh grabbed for the rings. "Stop it Kaye Leigh you're making a fool of yourself." Morgan said as peopled looked at her. Becki came over to the table.

"What's going on Kaye Leigh?" she asked.

"I was just showing her the present Jeff gave me last night while he was telling me he loved me." Morgan said laughing. Kaye Leigh stood up to leave. "Admit defeat Kaye Leigh and accept what Sam is willing to give you, move on and let Jeff do the same."

"Jeff may not be mine anymore, but I promise you Morgan that you will end up with nothing." Kaye Leigh said. She turned to leave with Becki.

"Hey Kaye Leigh, next time Jeff is gone remember it's my bed that he will be in." Morgan yelled so the whole restaurant heard. Kaye Leigh drew back and hit her. She had Morgan by the neck when Jon and Jeff pulled her off.

Someone had called the police.

"Kaye Leigh found out that Jeff and I are having an affair, she came here to confront me and then attacked me." Morgan said as tears fell down her face. Kaye Leigh watched her, she was so full of anger and hatred she wanted to attack her again. "I was just sitting here waiting for Jeff to come back." Morgan was giving her statement to one of the officers.

"Kaye Leigh tell me what happened." Another officer asked her. They were friends of Jon's so she knew them also and it made it easier. Kaye Leigh was beyond angry and hurt, there was only one way Morgan got those rings and that she knew about what was happening at the house, and Kaye Leigh was stupid enough to fall for his lies once again.

"Jeff did you give your wife's rings to Mrs. Thomas last night?" the officer that talked to Kaye Leigh was talking to him now.

"What, of course not I left the rings up in the bedroom after our argument and I never saw Morgan last night." He said.

"Mrs. Thomas, please give me the rings." The officer said. Morgan handed them to him. "Are these your wife's rings?" he asked Jeff.

"Yes! Where did you get them?" Jeff yelled.

"You gave them to me last night when you came to my hotel room." She said.

"You're a liar." He said taking a step towards her.

"Jeff everyone knows now you can stop pretending." She said smiling at him.

"Jeff you need to calm down." The officer said as Jeff took another step towards her.

"I want charges brought against Kaye Leigh." Morgan said looking at her.

Jon was with Kaye Leigh.

"How could she have gotten my rings if he didn't give them to her?" she said angrily. "I wanted to believe him, I can't believe how stupid I am Jon, when will I ever learn the only person you can depend on is yourself." Becki was watching her; she could not believe the whole thing.

"Kaye Leigh there has to be a reasonable explanation for all of this." Becki said.

"Just stop it Becki! He lies, he always has, and I do not want to hear anymore. Either support me or go away." Kaye Leigh said wearily.

"Kaye Leigh we're going to have to take you down to the station." An officer said apologetically.

"Mrs. Thomas is pressing assault charges." Kaye Leigh started laughing.

"Great a perfect ending to a perfect night." She said.

"Is this really necessary?" Jon asked.

"Jon you know the drill." The officer said. "I need you to turn around and put your hands behind your back."

"You don't have to handcuff her, she isn't a threat, and I do know that." Jon said angrily.

"It's fine Jon." She said putting her hands behind her back.

Kaye Leigh was placed in the back of a patrol car. This was just getting better and better she thought. She was not going to leave or try to kick Jeff out because she promised and she stands by her commitments, but she was never going to talk to him again. The divorce papers would be finalized this week she could make it through one more week. Hopefully it would not take long after that or maybe Jeff would decide to just go be with Morgan.

When they got to the station, Kaye Leigh was fingerprinted, photographed, and led to a cell.

"I'm really sorry Kaye Leigh." The officer said.

"You're just doing your job don't worry about it." She replied. "By the way I don't want any visitors and I will post my own bail."

"Kaye Leigh that means you will be here until Monday." The officer said.

"I realize that, and it's what I want." She told him.

"If you're sure." He replied shaking his head.

Jeff, Jon, Curtis, and Becki got to the station shortly after Kaye Leigh was booked.

"Let me see Kaye Leigh." Jeff said.

"Sorry, but she has requested no visitors, and that she posts her own bail." The officer said.

"That's ridiculous!" Jeff said.

"It's up to her, I tried to talk to her, but she said she realized what she was asking and that's what we have to follow." The officer replied.

"They can't go back and see her, but I can. I may not be on duty but I still work here." Jon said.

"True." The officer said laughing.

Jon went back to the cells and found Kaye Leigh. Some guy was in another cell making rude comments.

"I said no visitors." Kaye Leigh said shutting her eyes.

"I'm not a visitor; I'm an officer right now, which is good for you." Jon said. "Sit up Kaye Leigh." He tapped her legs so he could sit down next to her. "What are you doing? There is no reason for you to sit in here." He said.

"It's much easier in here at least people don't lie." She said. "And don't start telling me how much you believe Jeff because I don't want to hear it Jon."

"You don't have to hear it Kaye Leigh, but you aren't going to sit here either." He said. "I will post your bail and you can pay me back if you don't want your husband to do it." With that, he left.

When Jon got back out front, he had the officer find out what her bail would be.

"She's going to let me post it?" Jeff said.

"Well you're going to post it but she's going to think it's me doing it or she won't come out." Jon said.

"She's angry about the rings."

"Great." Jeff said.

"It will be ok." Becki said.

"They said since she has no priors and that the incident was provoked by Mrs. Thomas that she wouldn't have to post bail and more than likely the charges will be dismissed." The officer told them when he came back. "I'll go get Kaye Leigh now."

"You're free to go Kaye Leigh." He said opening the door.

"Great." She replied. She did not say a word on the way home, nor did she acknowledge anyone talking to her. She went straight up to their bedroom. Jeff did not know what to do, she was keeping her promise about not leaving or kicking him out but she was definitely withdrawing from him. He followed her upstairs.

Kaye Leigh went into the bathroom when he came in; when she came out, she was dressed in her nightgown.

"Can we talk Kaye Leigh?" he asked. She did not look at him or say a word as she put on her robe. "Kaye Leigh you said we would talk." He reminded her. "Please." Kaye Leigh walked out the door without looking back.

"Do you want something to eat Kaye Leigh?" Becki asked. She shook her head. Jeff came into the dinning room and sat down across from her.

"Ok Kaye Leigh you won't talk to me so please listen. I did not give Morgan rings, nor would I have ever done something like that. I don't know how she got them, that's something we can add to our list to figure out." He said. Kaye Leigh poured herself a glass of tea and still said nothing.

"You know Kaye Leigh if you don't talk you will explode." Jon said. Curtis and Becki laughed.

"Want to talk?" Becki asked.

"There's nothing to talk about." She replied.

"Kaye Leigh you promised you wouldn't push me away." Jeff said. Kaye Leigh finally looked at him.

"You promised to be faithful, so I guess we've both lied." She replied.

"I have been!" he yelled exasperatedly.

"Really Jeff then explain to me how she got my rings that you took off? How did she know there was a lot of stuff going on at the house that night?" Kaye Leigh said.

"What do you mean?" Jon asked.

"Morgan said Jeff went to her hotel room last night but couldn't stay because he said there were a lot of things going on back at the house." She replied.

Curtis and Jon looked at him.

"Where did you go last night?" Jon asked. Jeff laughed.

"Not to Morgan's I can promise you that." Jeff said angrily.

"Where Jeff?" Jon repeated.

"You can either accept my word Jon or not I don't care." He said.

"I think you need to leave." Jon said. Jeff laughed.

"This is my house." He said.

"This is Kaye Leigh's house, and it will be after the divorce, now leave." Jon said standing up. Jeff stood up.

"I'm not leaving Jon." He said. Jon took a step towards Jeff.

Kaye Leigh stood up and got between them.

"Stop it Jon! Jeff is staying. When the court decides who gets the ranch then one of us will leave, not until then do you understand?" Kaye Leigh said.

"This is your ranch you built it." Jon said.

"It is our house until the divorced is final, now I am tired, and I've had a very long day. I'm going to bed and you two had better not fight." She said. Kaye Leigh went upstairs.

"You have better start praying that the evidence is out there to prove your innocence's." Jon said.

"Jon be quiet!" Jeff yelled.

"Knock it off you two." Becki said.

"She's right Kaye Leigh doesn't need you two at each other on top of everything else." Curtis said.
