BTK Killer Letters

BTK Poems

Our BTK Communications website includes BTK Letters, BTK puzzles, BTK poems, BTK threats, BTK evidence from crime scenes. He even made a 911 message to give victim location. The BTK Killer letters were by far the creepiest but the BTK poem known as, Death on a cold January morning can give you chills up and down your spine. These extremely explicit BTK Letters and BTK Poetry became the norm at that time, with this particular attention seeking serial killer as authorities waited in terror for the next BTK letters to arrive.

These horrific BTK killer letters were intended to bring mental and emotional torture to those who read them as we are about to do. Prepare and beware before you enter the mind of the evil soul who wrote these BTK letters. Below are some of the BTK Killer letters. They have been shared as they were written with spelling and grammar errors as for you to get a sense of his demeanor and the essence of the intent of the BTK Letters.

October 1974 ...

The Wichita Eagle-Beacon newspaper got a call from a man claiming that he killed the Otero family. He told them that he left a letter at the Public Library in a mechanical engineering book.

Here are some of the contents of the first of the BTK letters: (Again, Some words are misspelled to leave integrity of the letter.)

"I write this letter to you for the sake of the tax payer as well as your time. Those three dude you have in custody are just talking to get publicity for the Otero murders. They know nothing at all. I did it by myself and with no ones help. There has been no talk either. Let's put this straight... ."

"I'm sorry this happen to society. They are the ones who suffer the most. It hard to control myself. You probably call me 'psychotic with sexual perversion hang-up.' When this monster enter my brain I will never know. But, it here to stay. How does one cure himself? If you ask for help, that you have killed four people they will laugh or hit the panic button and call the cops.

"I can't stop it so the monster goes on, and hurt me as well as society. Society can be thankful that there are ways for people like me to relieve myself at time by day dreams of some victims being torture and being mine. It a big compicated game my friend of the monster play putting victims number down, follow them, checking up on them waiting in the dark, waiting, waiting... the pressure is great and sometimes he run the game to his liking. Maybe you can stop him. I can't. He has aready chosen his next victim or victims. I don't who they are yet. The next day after I read the paper, I will know, but it to late. Good luck hunting.

"YOURS, TRULY GUILTILY"

"P.S. Since sex criminals do not change their M.O. or by nature cannot do so, I will not change mine. The code words for me will be... Bind them, toture them, kill them, BTK, you see he at it again. They will be on the next victim.

In this sample of the BTK Killer letters, he gave detailed information about the killings. It was indeed a letter from the man responsible for the Otero's murders. In the letter, he also said:

"The code words for me will be...Bind them, Torture them, Kill them."

Thus was born, the BTK killer.

The first of the BTK killer Letters also included a chilling threat, that "when the urge struck him, he would kill again."

However, there is something noteworthy ... The BTK killer wanted it known in the BTK letter that HE was the responsible party who killed the Otero family and yet he never claimed to have killed Kathryn Bright. However, it is quite a coincidence that Katherine Bright and Julie Otero both worked at the same place and even on the same assembly line.

Maybe BTK knew the brother to Kathryn was able to provide information that could help identify him so he did not want to take credit for it, as to cause doubt. Perhaps that is why Kathryn had strangle marks on her throat, but the cords were removed so the M.O. would apparently been seen differently and cause a shadow of doubt in the investigators minds. Or maybe ... He did not do it.

Only BTK knows the truth.

When Nancy Fox, a 25 year old woman, was killed. A man called the police from a pay phone and reported a murder at 843 South Pershing. It was a duplex, and the other unit was vacant. When the authorities arrived at the address, they found a broken window and the body of Nancy Fox. She was tied up and strangled with a nylon stocking. The phone had been taken off the hook and the lines had been cut on the outside of the house. Detectives said the contents of her purse had been dumped on a coffee table. The murder had occurred at night, semen was found at the scene, but an autopsy later revealed that Nancy Fox had not been sexually assaulted.

Another of the BTK Killer letters arrived ... An envelope postmarked Jan. 31 and sent to the Wichita Eagle contained a poem, printed with a child's rubber stamping set. The BTK letter started out by saying ...

"SHIRLEY LOCKS SHIRLEY LOCKS
WILT THOU BE MINE"

Postcard about Shirley Locks

It was an obvious reference to Shirley Vian.

After receiving no reaction from the newspaper, because of a mistake at the newspaper, BTK contacted KAKE-TV with the next of the BTK letters in an attempt to get some recognition.

Yet another of the BTK Killer letters was created. The two page BTK letter arrived on Friday, February 10.

"How many people do I have to kill before I get my name in the paper or some national attention?"

... he asked. He said he planned to "kill again."

Police Chief Richard LaMunyon said that a serial killer claiming seven murders was threatening to kill again. The authorities released more of his letter ... BTK wrote:

"I am compelled to kill by "factor-X," the same factor that motivated Son of Sam in New York, Jack the Ripper in London and the Hillside Strangler in Los Angeles."

"It seems senseless but we cannot help it,"

"There is no help, no cure except death or being caught and put away."

"A little paragraph in the newspaper would have been enough."

"After a thing like Fox, I come home and go about life like anyone else."

LaMunyon said he had claimed responsibility for the murders of the Otero's, Fox, Vian and a seventh unnamed victim. Police assume Kathryn Bright is the seventh victim, but that is not certain.

The authorities had not publicized the first of the BTK Letters because they thought it was in the best interest of the investigation. They went public with the KAKE letter when they realized that their idea hadn't worked. They decided to try and start communicating with B.T.K through the media.

April 1979 ...

Police responded to a burglary call at 615 S. Pinecrest at which 63 year old Anna Williams, who lived there had arrived home late from a dance to find some jewelry, clothing and cash missing. The intruder had entered through a basement window and the phone line had been cut, which made the authorities think it may be the work of BTK.

June 15, 1979 ... More BTK Killer letters emerge.

The woman received an envelope with a poem, a sketch, clothing and jewelry that had been taken during the break in. In the poem, the person wrote: "he regretted that the woman had taken so long to get home that night. He had intended to kill her."

An identical one of BTK Letters in an envelope containing similar items and a poem arrived at KAKE-TV the next day.

The poem was titled "Oh Anna, Why Didn't You Appear."

July 16, 1979 ...

A female postal clerk happened to open a door at about four A.M. and a man standing there said "put this in the K.A.K.E. mail box and handed an envelope to her. She didn't think much about it. It may have been the letter BTK sent to K.A.K.E.

"Later, she described him as about 30 years old, about 5 feet nine inches tall, white. He was wearing a blue jean jacket, jeans and gloves (in June!) He was clean shaven, with hair cropped short above the ears. He had a gap between his front teeth."

August 15, 1979 ...

After being enhanced with modern technology, the BTK 911 voice tape was aired in hopes of having someone recognize the voice, but to no avail.

A new investigation began in 1984 using advances in computers and DNA technology. The results from these investigations showed that the known BTK murders occurred within three and a half miles from one another. BTK must have lived close by because he felt comfortable in time consuming torture, so the authorities created a list of every white male who had lived within a quarter mile of the Otero's, Vian and Fox houses.

One of the BTK Killer Letters was a poem BTK wrote about Shirley Vian and was patterned after a nursery rhyme which had recently appeared in a puzzle magazine, so a list of the magazine subscribers were added to the list of suspects.

A another poem within one of BTK Letters, BTK wrote about Nancy Fox, which he titled "Oh Death to Nancy," was patterned after a poem called "Oh Death" that was published in a textbook used in a W.S.U. American folklore class. The names of male students in that class went on the suspect list. This letter was analyzed and found to have been copied in the Wichita State University which created even more suspects that could be added to the list.

Using advanced technology and a computer, this list of suspects had 225 men on it. Most of the suspects had moved away. Two teams of detectives set out on cross country quest, collecting blood and saliva samples.

Only 5 of the 225 men contacted, refused to cooperate. and the tests were unable to eliminate 7 other suspects. In 1987, the investigation was ceased with a small list of suspects left.

December 31, 1987 ...

Mary Fager found her husband which had been shot twice in his back. Her two daughters were both found strangled in a hot tub which was in the basement of their home. One of the daughters was nude. Mary Fager, received a letter from someone claiming to be the BTK Strangler. The letter stated that "while he had not committed the murders, he was a fan of whoever had" ... One of the investigators in the BTK case who saw the letter, believes that it was from BTK ... A local contractor was arrested but was later acquitted for the crime. The authorities believe that the contractor was the actual killer.

There were no more incidents or BTK Letters or any other communications concerning BTK for the next sixteen years.

January 17, 2004 ...

The Wichita Eagle published a story marking the 30th anniversary of the Otero killings.

Two months later ...

A Serial Killer is Reborn

March 17, 2004 ...

Thirty years after the Otero family murders, a BTK letter (The newest of the upcoming BTK Killer Letters) which was postmarked March 17, 2004 which was exactly 27 years from the date he killed Shirley Vian, the Wichita Eagle received a letter with copied pictures of a dead woman and the driver's license of Vicki Wegerle. The authorities believe this is the eighth victim of BTK. The case was reopened and the letter was authenticated as being from BTK. The photos were photos from Vicki Wegerle's murder scene. As the police long suspected, BTK took photos of his victims, and kept them as souvenirs or maybe so he could reinvent the killings in his mind when he wanted to.

The return address on the envelope was:

Bill Thomas Killman
1684 S. Oldmanor
Wichita, KS 67218

This name on the envelope of this latest of the BTK Letters is an obvious play on the initials BTK.

The address ended up being to a vacant building.

Below is a copy of the letter sent by BTK and the name and address he used:

Possible Clues to BTK killer Letters Note:

  • He mailed the letter from Wichita.
  • He used a name with the initials BTK
  • He ran the words old manor together.
  • There was a 4-plex at this address in the city.
  • He used two periods to separate Kansas abbreviation.
  • Postmark was on 27th anniversary of Shirley Vian murder.

May 5, 2004 ...

KAKE TV, which is a Wichita television station, received a letter from BTK. The letter contained a word puzzle of sorts that revealed clues to some of BTK's killings. The letter also contained copies of two identification cards. A Southwestern Bell employee and an employee of the Wichita school system. Perhaps BTK used fake identification to gain access to his victim's homes or maybe it is clues to his true identity. The police received yet another letter in June 2004, but are not releasing any information about it. He continues to write letters to the authorities, but they are being very tightlipped about the contents as to protect the evidence in the letters.

Here is a link to the puzzle ...

July 17 2004 ...

Yet another of the BTK Killer Letters was found in a mechanical engineering book in the drop box of the Wichita Public Library. The same place he left a letter years ago. The letter was given to police who confirmed that it was a genuine BTK letter. The content of the letter has not been revealed by the police.

BTK sent another of his BTK Letters to authorities which contained what appeared to be a book he was creating titled "The BTK Story" ... The book had thirteen chapters. One of the chapters was titled "PJ's" ... BTK wrote a poem about one of his victims named Nancy Fox and his poem was taken from a poem called "oh death" which was a poem taught by a teacher at the university in Wichita.

Her name was PJ Wyatt. Could this be a clue to the identity of BTK?

Did BTK know PJ Wyatt?

Who was PJ Wyatt?

Dr. P.J. Wyatt

She was a former college professor at W.S.U. which taught from 1964 to 1986. She died of cancer in 1991. An only child who was never married and had no surviving family. She was an excellent teacher who was able to reach the students with her unique style. Wichita police think the song "Oh, Death," which was a poem that Wyatt used in a class, was the basis for the 1978 BTK Letters poem which he titled "Oh! Death to Nancy," The FBI confirmed their belief that there is a definite connection in the reference to PJ in the letter received from BTK and the folklore song, 'Oh, Death,' ...

Here are the words to the original version of the poem:

Oh Death

Oh, death Oh, death Won't you spare me over til another year

Well what is this that I can't see
With ice cold hands taking hold of me
Well I am death none can excel
I'll open the door to heaven or hell

Whoa death someone would pray
Could you wait to call me til another day
The children pray the preacher preached
Time and mercy is out of your reach

I'll fix your feet til you can't walk
I'll lock your jaw til you can't talk
I'll close your eyes so you can't see
This very hour come and go with me

In death I come to take the soul
Leave the body and leave it cold
To drop the flesh off of the frame
The earth and worms both have a claim

Oh death
Oh death
Won't you spare me over til another year

My mother came to my bed
Place a cold towel upon my head
My head is warm my feet are cold
Death is a movin upon my soul

Oh death how you're treatin me
You close my eyes so I can't see
Well you're hurtin my body you make me cold
You run my life right out of my soul

Oh death please consider my age
Please don't take me at this stage
My wealth is all at your command
If you'll remove your icy hands

Oh the young the rich or poor
All alike to me you know
No wealth no land no silver or gold
Nothin satisfies my but your soul

Oh death
Oh death
Won't you spare me over til another year
Won't you spare me over til another year
on't you spare me over til another year

Here are the lyrics to BTK's version of the poem in one 0of the BTK letters: (Some words are misspelled to leave integrity of letter as with all BTK Letters.)

Oh! Death to Nancy

What is this taht I can see
Cold icy hands taking hold of me
for Death has come, you all can see.

Hell has open it,s gate to trick me.
Oh! Death, Oh! Death, can't you spareme,
over for another year!

I'll stuff your jaws till you can't talk
I'll blind your leg's till you can't walk
I'll tie your hands till you can't make a stand.

And finally I'll close your eyes so you can't see
I'll bring sexual death unto you for me.

BTK

August 24, 2004 ...

Wichita police asked for the public's help in tracking down the original copy of a poem written by the serial killer BTK after a woman that he intended to kill in 1979, did not come home when he expected her to. BTK titled the poem "Oh Anna, Why Didn't You Appear." which may be a version of another original poem, but extensive research has not found it to be based on a known, published work. Here is the poem he wrote:

Oh, Anna Why Didn't You Appear

T' was perfect plan of deviant pleasure so bold on that Spring nite
My inner felling hot with propension of the new awakening season

Warn, wet with inner fear and rapture, my pleasure of entanglement,
like new vines at night

Oh, Anna, Why Didn't You Appear
Drop of fear fresh Spring rain would roll down from your nakedness
to scent to lofty fever that burns within,
In that small world of longing, fear, rapture, and desparation (sic),
the game we play, fall on devil ears
Fantasy spring forth, mounts, to storm fury, then winter clam at
the end.

Oh, Anna Why Didn't You Appear
Alone, now in another time span I lay with sweet enrapture garments
across most private thought
Bed of Spring moist grass, clean before the sun, enslaved with
control, warm wind scenting the air, sun light sparkle tears
in eyes so deep and clear.

Alone again I trod in pass memory of mirrors, and ponder why for
number eight was not.
Oh, Anna Why Didn't You Appear

October 22, 2004 ...

A package was found at the Omni Center drop box.

November 30, 2004 ...

The authorities decided to share some information that BTK has been providing in the BTK Killer letters over the years. Much of the information can be considered BTK's personal biography. Keep in mind that the information BTK provided may or may not be true, despite his claims that they are. Here is the information he has provided in the BTK letters ...

  • He was born in 1939 which makes him 64 or 65 years old.
  • He has a fascination for trains.
  • His dad died in WWII and was raised by his mother and grandparents.
  • His mother worked near the railroad.
  • He attended church and Sunday school as a child.
  • He had a cousin named Susan who moved to Missouri.
  • His family moved many times and seemed to always reside near a railroad.
  • His grandpa played a fiddle and died of lung disease.
  • When BTK was 11 years old his mother was dating a detective for the railroad.
  • BTK built and operated a ham radio in the early 1950's.
  • He likes photography and can print and develop his own photos.
  • He likes fishing, camping and hunting.
  • He had a Hispanic girlfriend named Petra and her sister was named Tina.
  • He attended a tech military school then joined military. Discharged in 1966.
  • He moved back in with his mother who was renting out part of her house.
  • He solicited prostitutes.
  • His first employment was an electro-mechanic then worked on office equipment.
  • He traveled much and for lengthy times with his work.

The television show 'America's Most Wanted" went to Wichita and filmed for a segment on BTK to be aired on December 11, 2004. John Walsh was quoted as saying ...

"In the past he's said "How many people do I have to kill to get national attention" well, this coming Saturday night he'll be on television. I hope we'll take him down, his arrogance is disgusting."

December 14, 2004 ...

A man found a package in a small park where police had been searching a week before. The package was bound with rubber bands and inside were many different items including Nancy Fox's driver's license, a Chapter list of the BTK story like the one BTK sent before. There are three Chapters that have been revealed thus far. On this letter Chapters One, Two and Eight were blank. Chapter 13 was called "Will There Be More" ... In his first letter he titled Chapter Eight "MO-ID-RUSE" but left it blank this time. As you recall, PJ's was the title of Chapter Seven.

It is obvious that BTK wants to advance from simply sharing his BTK letters but wants to write a book to tell his life. Did he delete the three chapters from his new letter because he has already provided the information he wants for those chapters to the authorities? He deleted Chapters One and/or Two which may have been the information he provided about himself which was revealed on November 30, 2004. As most books begin with a biography of the person's early life. This package which was found may contain contents for Chapter Eight since it has now been deleted. Time will tell. It also contained a "P.J." doll (a friend of the doll named Barbie) with a bag over it's head and it's feet bound with pantyhose.

January 25, 2005 ...

A mysterious postcard (Another of the BTK Killer Letters) was sent to KAKE TV from the name ... S. Killett with the return address of 803 N. Edgemoor which is the address of the Otero family. The back of the postcard gave information on where they could find "Communication number eight" ... A Post Toasties cereal box on a rural county road of Seneca between 69th and 77th Streets North and was propped up against the base of a "road curves' sign and weighed down with a brick. The cereal box had " BTK '' on it. The BTK Letters post card KAKE TV received also had the word "contents" then specified the contents of the mysterious package ... "Post Toasties box. "c-9" ... "P.J.- Little Mex" ... "doll" ... "Haunt of KS" acronym and list of jewelry" ...

There was also a message of yet another package which was sent on January 8th 2005, but was not found. The second package was reportedly seen by a passerby and they described the package as being faded and wrapped with a yellow ribbon and was sitting at the base of a "no dumping" sign just south of 101st Street North. It is noteworthy that two unsolved park city murders occurred near there over ten years ago. Is BTK sending out a message with his BTK Killer Letters that he had committed these murders as well? It is believed that BTK was referring to the package found at home depot.

Both murders involved women which were strangled and their bodies dumped in rural areas. The first occurred on April 27, 1985. A 53 year old woman named Marine Hedge was taken from her home at 6254 Independence in Park City. Her lifeless strangled body was found eight days later on a dirt road near 143rd Street East and 37th Street North. There was a pair of pantyhose nearby. Her vehicle was found at 21st and Woodlawn in a parking lot.

The second park city murder happened on January 19, 1991. Delores Davis, which was 62 years old was found 13 days after she was murdered under a bridge on an unpaved stretch of 117th Street North near Meridian. She had been strangled and her knees, feet and hands had been tied with pantyhose. The killer had cut her phone line and threw a brick through her glass door to gain access to her home.

These actions certainly sound like the work of BTK and it may very well be that he is attempting to claim credit for his handiwork. However this is just an assumption at this point. However, him leaving two packages in rural areas on the side of the road in the same area these two women were strangled, the same M.O. and him leaving a brick atop one of his packages does give reason for one to ponder.

February 03, 2005 ...

KAKE TV received yet another of the BTK Killer letters via postcard postmarked February 2, 2005. The return address was KAKE TV's address and the name of sender was Happ Kakemann and had a Carlsbad Caverns stamp. There was no package mentioned this time. He did send KAKE TV a personal message though. It read "thank you for your quick response on #7 and 8. Thank to the news team for their efforts. Sorry about Susan and Jeff's colds" he was referring to two anchor people at KAKE TV which had been ill recently. Under the heading of business issues, it said ... "PS: may want to use ..." then a code is mentioned which the police requested be kept from the public, "as code # and letters from me to you for my verification code to you" ... He also gave them a message to give police but are not able to share the information at the authorities request.

BTK mentioned the three children of Shirley Vian in a letter to authorities.
He wrote: (Some words are misspelled to leave integrity of letter.)

"They were very lucky; a phone call save them. I was going to tape the boys and put platics bag over there head like I did Joseph, and Shirley. And then hang the girl. God 0h-god what a beautiful sexual relief this would been."

It is becoming obvious that he is sending these BTK Killer Letters and packages on the anniversaries of his crimes. He is also starting to become more personal with his messages.

February 16, 2005 ...

BTK has sent another communication; it was smaller than the standard 8" x 10" manila envelope with a necklace inside. The return address was "PJ Fox" ... As we know, BTK loves to play games using codes and word associations and PJ may be a reference to the college professor and fox represents Nancy Fox which had a missing necklace. He sent this package to KSAS which is a "Fox" affiliate. He also gave KSAS Fox 24, a code # as he did with KAKE TV to confirm that BTK Killer Letters that he sends them are from him.

February 17, 2005 ...

The lead investigator of the BTK case gave a news conference today and here is the transcript from it ...

"Good morning. The Behavioral Analysis Unit of the FBI has confirmed two BTK Killer letters as being authentic communications from BTK. The letter that was dropped in a UPS box at 2nd and Kansas Street in October 2004 has been authenticated.

The communication contained information about BTK that was subsequently released to the public on Nov. 5, 2004. The FBI can confirm that this is a BTK communication, but cannot confirm the accuracy of the information he wrote about himself in the letter.

The other communication that the FBI had confirmed is from BTK is the package that was located in December by a Wichita resident in Murdock Park. This package contained a driver's license belonging to Nancy Fox which BTK took with him from the crime scene.

Recent BTK Killer letters and other communications have included several items of jewelry. There was jewelry included in the Post Toasties box that was left on North Seneca Street as well in Communication # 7 and in the package received yesterday by KSAS Fox 24. The contents of yesterday's package also contained jewelry. We're in the process of determining whether or not any of this jewelry belonged to the victims.

During the first media briefing held last March after BTK resurfaced I said the BTK investigation is the most challenging case I have ever worked on and that BTK would be every interesting to talk with. I still contend that this is our most challenging case, but I am very pleased with the ongoing dialog through these letters.

Since BTK resurfaced in Wichita last March we have received more than 5,000 tips and leads from the public. Anyone with information on the case is asked to call 660-6440. Those calling from outside the local area may call 1-866-SOLV-BTK or 1-866-765-8285. Citizens can also email information to coldcase@wichita.gov or they can mail information to Cold Case, PO Box 9202, Wichita KS 67277-0202. Thank you very much."

February 17, 2005 ...

KAKE TV, with permission from the authorities, has decided to release information they had received from BTK regarding the 13 Chapter book that BTK is writing. Here is the full list of the chapter titles:

BTK Story

Chapter 1 ... "A Serial Killer is Born"
Chapter 2 ... "Dawn"
Chapter 3 ... "Fetish"
Chapter 4 ... "Fantasy World"
Chapter 5 ... "The Search Begins"
Chapter 6 ... " BTK 's Haunts"
Chapter 7 ... "PJ's"
Chapter 8 ... "MO-ID-RUSE"
Chapter 9 ... "Hits"
Chapter 10 ... "Treasured Memories"
Chapter 11 ... "Final Curtain Call"
Chapter 12 ... "Dusk"
Chapter 13 ... "Will There Be More"

Authorities believe that BTK could be involved in many other unsolved murder cases. In the BTK letters, he had been acting out the book that he is writing. He told the authorities in his BTK letters that he would send items before he actually did as though he has and agenda and is following it like a timeline. This would put him at Chapter 10 where he is sending the authorities some of his treasured memories along with the BTK letters.

Police Say BTK Has Been Captured

Did they capture him before he finished his game or is this part of his elaborate scheme? According to his book timeline, it is time for the "Final Curtain Call".

The next chapter is "dusk" ...

BTK said it best in his final chapter ...

"Will there be more" ...

The search for BTK Killer answers ... Continues.
