One day when Elizabeth went outside to play in the yard, a peculiar thing happened. Elizabeth saw the prettiest butterfly she had ever seen. She walked up to the bug to get a closer look, and saw it had a face unlike any butterfly she had ever seen. She was so happy that she tried to catch it, and then she thought she heard a tiny voice say, "Let's be nice."

Elizabeth looked around to see just where that voice came from, and then she heard it again. This time the voice asked, "What is your name?" Elizabeth didn't know what to think. She said, "My name is Elizabeth. Who is talking to me?" Then Elizabeth said, "This is a mean trick. I wouldn't try to trick you, whoever you are. I just want to play." Elizabeth thought the voice was coming from the butterfly, but butterflies can't talk. Still, she bent down close to the rose bush where the butterfly landed, and listened.

"What is your favorite thing to do?" asked the butterfly. Elizabeth was surprised to hear a butterfly talk, as I am sure you would be too, but she answered the question, not knowing why. But somehow, she trusted that butterfly. Elizabeth told the butterfly, "I like to ride my bike. My Mom bought me a nice one for my birthday." "Well", said the butterfly, "Where do you like to go?" Elizabeth told the butterfly, "I just like to ride all over the place and see all the pretty trees and flowers in people's yards." The butterfly asked her, "Would you like to take me for a ride?" Oh, Elizabeth thought this would be fun, so she carefully picked up the butterfly in her hand and placed it in her basket.

Before we go I have to tell my Mom I am going to ride my bike. The butterfly told Elizabeth not to tell her Mom that she could talk, because her Mom would never believe it. Would you believe it? So, Elizabeth just asked if she could go for a bike ride. Her Mom said yes, so off they went on a journey together, just Elizabeth and the butterfly. They saw such beautiful things like flowers, and trees. They had a blast. Elizabeth got tired from pedaling so far, so the two of them sat under a shade tree to talk.

The butterfly was so interested in people and Elizabeth never spoke to a butterfly before, so you can imagine their excitement. They talked about their different lives. Elizabeth told the butterfly about her friend Rachel, wanting to play with her best doll and about how Elizabeth didn't want to share it. The butterfly told Elizabeth that she understood, but that if she was there with Elizabeth, to see how happy Rachel would be to play with the doll, it might be worth sharing it with Rachel. Elizabeth thought about this and decided to try it.

Elizabeth asked the butterfly, "What is your name? We have been having such fun, I forgot to ask." "My name is Cyndi", said the butterfly, and I live in a place were people are not allowed, but I am interested in people. I see them when I sneak into your world." "You have to sneak?", Elizabeth asked. "Well, yes", said her new friend, "I do." "Why do you have to sneak?" asked Elizabeth. The butterfly told her, "We are different from you. We are different from other butterflies, too. You see, we are fairies."

Elizabeth still didn't understand, so she asked, "Why can't you be in our world? It just doesn't make sense to me. You could have many friends if you just explored our world." "I know, I love to see people, but we can't because we are taught to fear humans." "Oh", said Elizabeth. "Well, can you visit again? I have to go home and have supper." "Yes", said the fairy butterfly, "I will, but don't tell anyone. It will be our secret, OK?" "Alright", Elizabeth said. "Do you need a ride someplace to get back to where you live?" "No", said the fairy. "I can get back, and I will meet you in your beautiful garden tomorrow at ten o'clock in the morning after I get up."

So Elizabeth said good-bye to the fairy and went home. She was so happy and was still very excited. She just had to tell her Mom about her adventure. Of course, her Mom thought she was just pretending and Elizabeth knew she would think that, but she had to tell someone about her adventure. The next morning at ten o'clock Elizabeth went outside to their garden and met the butterfly fairy on the rose bush again. They just sat in the garden and talked.

The fairy told Elizabeth about the carnival that was going on in her world. "A carnival?" asked Elizabeth. "What sort of carnival?" "Well", said the fairy, "We have games like, Fly And Go Seek, and Whose Wings Are These, where we cover our bodies in a piece of fabric and only our wings show, and ask who's wings are these? And then everyone guesses." "Are there prizes?" asked Elizabeth, who was very interested by now, and wanted to know all about the fairy carnival. "Oh yes", said the fairy, "And we have rides there too." "What kind of rides?" Elizabeth asked the fairy to tell her all she could. "We have some fun ones, like the Water Fairy Slide. It goes very fast. We have a ride called the Twister, too. It makes me dizzy." Elizabeth was so excited, she wanted to go with the fairy.

Soon Mom called Elizabeth in for lunch. "I have to eat lunch, then help my Mom with chores. Later, I can come out." The fairy told Elizabeth to clap her hands together five times, and she would come to the garden and sit on the rose bush. They said good-bye and Elizabeth went in for lunch. Elizabeth told her Mom all about Cyndi the butterfly fairy, and the rides and games. Her Mom thought, "What a good imagination", but we know the truth. Elizabeth just let her Mom think it was an imaginary friend, because who would believe such a tale?

They ate lunch and talked about how much fun it will be to make homemade spaghetti sauce when the tomatoes get ripe, but Elizabeth had her mind on her new friend. After she cleaned her room and helped fold clothes Elizabeth asked her Mom if she could go outside to play. Her Mom said, "Yes, you may." So Elizabeth went out to the garden and clapped five times, and just as she promised, Cyndi the fairy flew in to the garden and sat on the rose bush. Elizabeth told Cyndi that she would love to visit the fairies at the carnival. "I wish you could, but I'm not even supposed to be here. I can't just show up with you and say that I brought a friend in from the human world. They all would be frightened and angry at me."

Cyndi wanted things to be different. She thought Elizabeth was right about how much fun they could have. Elizabeth told Cyndi that she wished she was a fairy too, but she understood that fairies and people live in separate worlds, and that wouldn't change ... or could it? Suddenly, Elizabeth got an idea. "Cyndi", she asked, "You are magic, right?" "Well yes", said Cyndi. "All fairies are magical. You have that look on your face." She said, "You have a plan, don't you?" "Yes, I do, but I have to go in. I will explain tomorrow."

Elizabeth had an incredible plan. She told her Mom all about it. Her Mom still thought she was pretending, but told her, "It sounds like fun." Elizabeth said to her Mom, "Maybe after they get to know me, I can bring you to the carnival and you will see." Elizabeth could hardly sleep. She knew her plan would be exciting. Finally, she fell asleep and dreamed of a new world where it didn't matter how you look or even whether you are a fairy or a human.

The next morning, Elizabeth ran to the garden. She was so excited to tell Cyndi, the fairy, her plan. She clapped five times and Cyndi flew to the rose bush and Elizabeth told her the plan. "Can you change me into a fairy?" she asked her new friend. "Well, yes I can, but I have never done it and I don't know anyone who has, so I don't know what you will look like. But, if things don't go right, I can change you back easily enough, I am sure." "Why don't you do it? Make me a fairy and bring me to the carnival?" Elizabeth asked. So Cyndi spun around twice and Elizabeth looked just like a fairy, except she still had a human face, only smaller. "Well let's go!" said Cindy. "How do we do it?" "We fly", said Cyndi, "Until we enter a door that humans can't see, and go inside." "That seemed easy enough to Elizabeth, so without thinking about what could happen, they flew to fairy land and into the carnival.

Elizabeth lives with her Mom. They have a big yard with a garden full of vegetables and pretty flowers. Elizabeth and her Mom have a nice time together, pulling weeds, watering plants, and picking vegetables to make good meals with. Elizabeth is growing up as all kids do, and there just aren't many kids for her to play with, so she spends a lot of time with her Mom. Elizabeth and her Mom talk about Jesus and how he sends messages to our brain and to our heart so we can be his tools for bringing others to Christ. Elizabeth and her friends have arguments when they play together, as all kids do. Elizabeth talked to God one afternoon after a big fight she had with her friend Rachel. The fight was over who gets to play with her best doll. Elizabeth likes to share, but that doll is very special to Elizabeth. She asked God to explain to Rachel, why it is fine for her to keep her best doll to herself. Elizabeth's Mom told her to share the doll and be nice. That was always Mom's answer, "Just be nice." Well, Elizabeth thought the other kids are not nice, so she couldn't understand why she should be nice to them.

When they got to the carnival, Elizabeth saw so many butterfly fairies, and rides, and games, and food. It looked like fun, but soon the other fairies saw Cyndi with Elizabeth and they knew she was a human. They didn't want to let either of them in. "You brought a human here to harm us!" they said, "We will not let you in." Elizabeth told the fairies that she just wanted to meet them and to be friends. Cyndi told them she had visited the human world and it wasn't bad there. She promised that Elizabeth wouldn't hurt them and that there was nothing to be afraid of. The other fairies decided to give Elizabeth a chance, so they let them in. They played Who Am I, and Fly And Go Seek, and they went on all kinds of fun rides. They had so much fun that each of them forgot their differences. Elizabeth went home with Cyndi and they told her Mom all about fairy land. Mom was very surprised, then they all went to fairy land together. Someday, I hope very soon, people and fairies can live as one, in both worlds.
