Do you have a spiritual exercise program? Part 7
Good day to you St. Louisans. Having a sunny autumn day with sunshine and temperatures in the seventies sure helps one get going on a Monday.

Part seven of our series on spiritual fitness has to do with family. Do we love our family? If we consider what we watched on Fox Sports Midwest yesterday and read in our morning newspaper, we would have to conclude slugger Albert Puhols is part of our St. Louis baseball family. We don’t want to lose him. We love him and want him to live in this city his entire life. We have a spiritual bond with the man, which simply means we are of the same mind with him, that is, at least until he tears himself away from us and signs with another club. At that point our spiritual bond with him may break, although it shouldn’t. Read on to find out why.
As long as Albert is spiritually one with us things go well for our extended baseball family. But should he leave us, some, not necessarily all, will bond with his replacement. That’s life. Love comes and love goes. Such is an example of one extended spiritual family.
Baseball aside, we have our near and far relatives of the spirit, and our near and far brothers and sisters in Christ Jesus in the spirit, and we have to deal with them. Such begs the question, do we love them? If we are honest with ourselves we will have to admit that sometimes we don’t. In our personal experience, dealing with close relatives and an extended church family can be trying at best. We have found that the root of most family squabbles, spiritual or otherwise is simply disunity. If we are a part or the causal factor of said problem, we need a spiritual exercise program to correct it.
So what exercises must we do in order to overcome our part in the spiritual disunity robbing not only us but all else as well of a heartfelt spiritual peace? We have to go back to square one on our exercise chart. Square number one is the answer for all of our spiritual problems. We can’t change anyone of the flesh, spiritual or otherwise, but we do have the ability to change ourselves. We will change ourselves in attitude toward others if we exercise the heart God has given us of Himself, and that heart is a love heart and a bright shining light in the midst of turmoil and disunity.
Love never fails. Now I can hear the “oh yes it does” cries from the hearts and mouths of many, but one has to accept the fact if we want a love relationship to succeed we have to be the ones to put the God kind of love into it.
As it is written, God is in the world not imputing trespasses and sins to us. Our Heavenly Love Dad continues to overlook our shortcomings through His grace that is given to us, and loves us despite our error prone ways. Now if we would consider that as a new species our nature is love according to the Spirit we have been given, and understand the great honor and privilege that has been given to us to be God’s sons and daughters, laying aside our grievance and picking up love wouldn’t be such a problem for us.
Our solution is to exercise the love of our Heavenly Father that we have been made spiritually in Christ Jesus. As always with any exercise program, it will be a struggle at first, but the key to our success is keeping on keeping on like our Heavenly love Dad and NEVER QUIT LOVING.
If we have to keep a set of 3X5 cards with us wherever we go and confess we will love so and so despite how they feel, act, or treat us, and do love things for them, our love will not fail, as it is God’s love that we give to them, the same as He has given to us.
Love provides unity where there is no unity, and it works when all else fails. Albert, whether you stay or go, this man will keep on loving you in Christ Jesus. We will not allow disunity to change our spiritual perspective about you as part of our extended baseball family. We will always love you in spirit.
