August - 23 Compassion

"The Lord is gracious and full of compassion."
(Psalms 111:4)
I used to be one of those Christians who saw the drug addicts who hung around Main Street all day and judged them. "Get a Job" "Straighten your act up"
Then my son had a heroin overdose and died but was resuscitated back to life. I didn't find out about it until he told me 2 weeks later.
I started taking him every day to the Rehab Clinic. At first I wanted to just sit in my car and wait for him.
But I watched the people pour in that door. There were people dressed up to go to work. Business suit types. Mom and Dad's with children. Young single Mothers with babies. Young people who were too scared to tell their families.
(like my son had been)
Then God gave me His compassion for them. Some people in my life did not understand this compassion. I had once been one of them.
Someone at church who used to work with drug addicts and had stopped told me not to bother. Give up on my son and give up on the people going into that door.
But God laid it on my heart to start going in with my son and just sit there and wait for him.
I am the hugging type. It is how I grew up. I always ask first because I know some people have been abused and are afraid of physical contact.
But God laid it on my heart to ask those people coming through the door if they needed a hug. I don't try and be a therapist. I don't lecture them.
Just hug them. Now, many who see me smile, wave and want their hug.
Not everyone wants one and that is ok. God lets me know who needs one.
There was a girl who had scabs all over her face from drug abuse. Instantly God reminded me of how Jesus went to where the lepers were.
A place most people stayed away from.
I reached out to that girl and hugged her. She told me she had not gotten a "Mothers hug" for many years. Tears came to her eyes.
I think I have share this with you in the past. But I am reminded by the Lord this morning to tell it again.
"Because of the Lord's great love we are not consumed, for His compassions never fail. They are new every morning; Great is your faithfulness." (Lamentations 3:22-23)
God's compassions never fail. They never stop. He loves us so much we are not consumed by our trials in this life. We need to just give them to Him and in our deliverance we have compassion for others.
God Bless You
