Tree Removal
Written by Luz Leigh - 19 August 2007
It is summer time in Texas. That usually indicates there will be lots of outdoor activity going on. Friday was no different. As I walked to the mailbox at the end of the driveway, I heard it. The sounds of a chainsaw. As I looked up the street, I saw the tree trimmers. The men who do this for a living have my admiration ... not for the butchering of the trees, but for the courage to be working around live electrical wires.
I place my letters in the mailbox so the mail lady can take them on their way, retrieve the morning newspaper from its little niche below the mailbox and return to the shade of my front porch. Shortly after I get comfortable, with a glass of iced tea nearby, the trimmers move to the lone tree in my front yard. It gets a "crew cut" about every 2 or 3 years because it is growing directly underneath the power lines, as well as the telephone and cable lines. Each year I promise myself I will get someone to come out and cut the rest of the tree down and haul it away. Then I go on my merry way, allowing the tree to again grow much too high.
While sitting there watching the men work, I remember when the tree was just a sprout in a flower bed. My husband's warning also rattles around in my brain. "That tree needs to be taken out of that flower bed." He could see down the road of life and realize when the tree was full grown it would be a nuisance and a hazard if left in that location. Did I heed his warning? Of course not. I wanted a shade tree.
The tree is a fast growing Chinese tallow so we soon had a shade tree under which the children could play. In the late afternoons we could sit in the yard and talk over the happenings of the day. Then one day, while we were away from home at work, the tree trimmers arrived to do their work. What a shock to see our once almost perfectly formed , shade-giving tree, looking like a mad man with a chainsaw had been turned loose in our yard. That was just the first of many times this would happen.
When the trimmers left this last time, the tree looked even more pitiful than before. It is UGLY. I have made the decision to have the remainder of the tree taken down and hauled away. This time I really mean it. Gone will be the limbs that hang over the driveway and scratch the roofs of my children's vehicles when they come for a visit. The birds will have to find another place in which to build their nests for their little ones. My wind chimes will need to be placed somewhere else. But, I suppose the thing I will miss most is seeing my younger grandson climbing in the tree and sitting among the branches. But now that he is nine years old, climbing the tree isn't high on his list of priorities anymore, so he probably won't miss it.
Most of the time when I write a story, I try to incorporate a moral or piece of advice. I suppose I will admit that I SHOULD have listened to my husband's advice and taken the tree out of the flower bed when it was just a sprout. And this one thing I have learned ... do NOT plant a tree underneath or even near power lines. That is, unless you want to have your tree butchered for free on a regular basis by your power company. I'll get back to you on what transpires with the tree removal project.
