The Upper Room - Chapter 3

Written by Luz Leigh - 10 March 2008

Jesus had just made the startling announcement that one of the twelve disciples would betray Him to His enemies. The meal was almost over and soon they would be leaving what we now call the Upper Room.

Matthew, Jude Thaddeus, (identified in some translations as Lebbeus, whose surname was Thaddeus), and Simon the Zealot are grouped together in the Leonardo da Vinci painting. This famous painting, which da Vinci completed hundreds of years after the actual event, depicts Jesus and the disciples gathered around a dining table.

After Jesus had told the disciples about the pending betrayal, He took bread and wine, blessed them and set the pattern for Christians to follow until His return. Partaking of the symbolic body (bread) and blood (wine) of Christ is to be done in remembrance of His sacrifice for our sins. He made the ultimate atonement for us when He died in our place, providing eternal life for those who believe in Him and follow Him.

With disbelief on their faces, Matthew, Jude and Simon try to come to grips with what Jesus has said. They have many questions besides the haunting one: "Who among us is the one who will betray the Master?"

Through their minds ran many of the words He had been speaking to them, trying to prepare them for His leaving them. "Let not your hearts be troubled, ye believe in the Father, believe also in me." "I will not leave you comfortless." "My peace I leave with you." "I am the true vine ... I and my Father are one ... no one comes to the Father but by me ..." Then the many parables he shared with them come to their minds, including the ones about the wedding banquet, resurrection and marriage, the rich young man, the landowner hiring workers ... and the list went on and on.

"Do you remember the day we sat on the mountainside with Him and He shared with us all those things about being 'blessed'?" "He told us that we would be blessed when we mourn, when people insult us, when we are meek." "But how can we be blessed when one of our own is about to betray our Master?"

After looking at the da Vinci painting of the Last Supper in the Upper room, one will notice references to the number three, which could be alluding to the Holy Trinity. The disciples are seated in groups of three; there are three windows on the wall behind Jesus and the shape of Jesus' body resembles a triangle. Just some thoughts on which to ponder.
