Sojourn With Luz Leigh

The Upper Room

Written by Luz Leigh - 29 February 2008

In his broken English, the priest was reciting the words so familiar to the faithful followers of the Catholic religion. For a number I years I would visit the local church for weddings or funerals and had been able to follow along with the mass. But today I was having a difficult time keeping my mind on what the priest was saying.

It is the Lenten season, therefore many of the statues at the front of the church are draped with royal purple cloth. And of course there are no arrangements of flowers to adorn the altar. But even with those trappings missing, the church is very ornate. The Stations of the Cross that grace the walls on each side of the sanctuary are beautiful works of art. The extremely high ceiling is painted to resemble puffy white clouds, with a hint of blue.

The church building was erected about one hundred years ago and has been well cared for. The parishioners have seen to the maintenance and necessary repairs. The hardwood floors glean; the carpet is spotless; the cushioned benches are tastefully done. The stained glass windows allow the sunshine from the outside to cast a warm feeling over the inside. Such a beautiful place in which to worship.

As I looked at all these fancy trappings, my mind turned to the simple room in which Jesus spent the last evening with his disciples before his betrayal. The place we sometimes refer to as The Upper Room. There were no ornate fixtures on the walls; no carpeting, and possibly not even much furniture. Any windows in the room would have been simple as was common to the area. The twelve followers of Jesus had been in this room before, but never had anything taken place prior to what would transpire that evening.

According to lore, Jesus and the Twelve sat on the floor near a low table on which meals were served. It is probable that the women who were also followers of the Holy One had prepared an evening meal to be shared by those gathered in the Upper Room. In the famous da Vinci painting of "The Last Supper" the participants are seen to be sitting along on side of the table, with Jesus in the center. Do you suppose they might have been seated on either side of the table as we sit today? For thirteen grown men to have been sitting on one side only, this would have required a rather long dining table. Somewhere there is probably a long dossier containing answers to all these questions I am putting forth, but this morning during that time in the church, I had only my imagination.

As the time in the funeral service drew near for the Eucharist, I bowed my head and thanked our Father for the love that was poured out by His only Son, Jesus Christ. The terrible things that came about following the last supper in that simple upper room were a part of the Plan. A Plan that provided for our salvation through the spilt blood of Jesus the Christ.
