Thanksgiving in May

Today began as most of my days do. Nothing spectacular was expected. I woke to the sound of birds chirping in the tree outside my window and a school bus making its way down the street. I did some laundry, prepared my breakfast and went to the computer.

In the midst of reading and answering email, I heard a vehicle pull into my driveway. Running to the bathroom to put on some lipstick and comb my hair, I scared my cat who was sleeping on my bed. She didn't look overly excited about the interruption of her nap.

The local Lions Club has a program through which one may pay a nominal fee and have the American flag displayed at the curbside on about seven or eight holidays during the year. In the spring each year a Lion appears at my door for my contribution. I am happy to be a part of this program. Not only am I supporting their worthy activities, but I get to see Old Glory flying next to my mailbox. The vehicle in the driveway was bringing a member of the Lions Club.

I invited the Lion into my living room, asking him to sit while I located my check book. Just as he was seated, my telephone rang. First time today it had done so. I jokingly told the gentleman that he must have sat on the button, causing it to ring. I excused myself so I could answer the phone. Oh, my, what a call it was. As soon as I hung up the phone, I turned to the Lion and said, "Join me in a prayer of thanksgiving." The call was from my oncologist's office to let me know my test results had come back "good." Because I had been praying many times this week, asking the Lord to allow me to have a good report, I felt it only right that I take that time to say "thank you." The gentlemen prayed silently as I offered an audible prayer. God is so good to me.

So this day that had begun as a mundane day had suddenly turned into a day of thanksgiving. As soon as the Lion had written my receipt and taken his leave, I called each of my children to tell them the good news. I could hear relief and happiness in their voices. I still have a C-scan scheduled for tomorrow, which is routine, but I am not as concerned about it now that my CEA count is very low. But, you know that I will still be asking for the Lord's blessing on that test as well.

So many scriptures have filled my heart and mind since that phone call. Psalm 100:4 "Enter his gates with thanksgiving and His courts with praise! Give thanks to Him, bless His name."

"Thanks be unto God for his inexpressible gift! (God' grace.) 2 Cor 9:15

"O give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever." Psalms 136:1

So what began as a so-so day has become one of joy and thanksgiving. I thank, You Lord, for Your love and mercy.
