Love ... The Supreme Gift

Written by Luz Leigh - 14 February 2009

This is being composed on Valentine's Day 2009. Remember as kids when we would make our own Valentines? Lots of red construction paper, a few lace doilies, scissors and paste were used to create our handwork. At our school our teachers in elementary school would cover a cardboard (I almost typed pasteboard since that was the term we used) box with some sort of red paper, attach a few hearts. She would cut a slot in the top of the box where we could drop in our Valentines.

I'm not sure what children do today, but I fear our little crudely made cards would not be acceptable. Fancy store-bought cards, or E-cards sent over the Internet are probably the norm. But if they are sent with love, that will make them just as meaningful.

"Love Is Supreme" is the title of the daily devotional for today, using 1 Corinthians 13 as the scripture passage. The Apostle Paul gave a definition of love in this letter to the Corinthians, saying that faith, hope and love are the things that will remain, but the greatest of them is love.

We love different people in different manners. Think of how you love your parents, your spouse, your children and your friends. When our parents reach their golden years, our love is manifest in our attention to their needs, physical, emotional and spiritual. When we show our love to a spouse, we do so in a manner that is gentle, understanding, forgiving and fulfilling of their needs. Our love to our children, from their earliest days, is to see that they are provided for, be it food, clothes, shelter and spiritual training. We tend to smother them at times because our love is so strong. To show our love for our friends, we include them in our plans when possible; reaching out to them when they are in need, not just physical, but emotional.

We do all these things because God loved us first and showed us how to love. It is almost beyond our comprehension of how great that love is. He sent his only Son to take on the form of sinful man so He could bear our sins while nailed to that cruel cross. But the best was yet to come!! He conquered death when he arose from the grave and ascended back to His father.

Talk about LOVE ... The greatest spiritual gift we have is the gift of love. May I challenge you today ... use that gift generously.
