Christian Depression Counseling

Christian Depression Help

This Christian depression counseling program is not intended for those who need medical treatment to treat the depression that they experience.

Even Jesus said some who are sick, need a physician.

Matthew 9:12

But when Jesus heard that, he said unto them, They that be whole need not a physician, but they that are sick.

My friend ... This Christian Depression study is for those who experience days of depression here and there as they travel along the Christian path.

Sooooooo ...

If you're under the care of a doctor, or if you're taking prescription medication for any reason, do not discontinue it unless you have orders from your doctor.

If you suffer from depression, chances are, you have probably learned all about government funded research about depression that shows such things as chemical changes that take place in the brain which causes some kind of imbalance contributing to the condition.

You may have found that many doctors believe that medication is the answer to managing depression and you may have discovered that psychiatrists feel mental therapy is the best way to keep depression under control, and who knows what else is out there.

You probably also know that depression is many times a symptom of a different problem, and in order to get rid of your depression, you have to find a solution to your problem.

If you're familiar with depression you know that it is an overwhelming feeling of sadness and confusion and that it sometimes causes fatigue, mood swings, crying, physical reactions, and lots of other things.

You probably also know that there are different levels of depression.

Some people are bipolar, which is a trendy psychological term for being manic-depressive, or experiencing severe depression sometimes, yet other times experiencing a very elevated mood or enthusiastic outlook on life.

There is mild depression, where you can still function quite normally, but you are by no means happy and there is also severe depression which causes some people to become immobilized, where they can't even get up out of bed because they are so physically drained by their emotions.

This Christian Depression study takes a look at a Christian approach, not a clinical approach to dealing with depression. I tell you the Truth ... Jesus is the most awesome healer there is.

What is Christian Depression and how does one overcome Christian Depression? Now ... We are not gonna talk a lot about the causes of depression itself in this study.

The intent of this study isn't to give you a lot of reasons or excuses as to why you experience depression, or analyze you in any way, because only God truly knows why you are depressed.

The Bible is quite clear on the origin of Christian depression ...

Proverbs 12:25

Anxiety in the heart of man causes depression, But a good word makes it glad. (NKJV)

How quickly you recover from this state of mind and heart is all up to you, because that's a choice only you can make.

That's right ... It's a choice.

As long as you hold on to the idea that something, or someone else can cure your depression, you may be holding yourself back from ridding yourself of this awful condition. Some types of Depression are nothing more than a bad habit, and nobody can break a habit for anyone else ... You have to break a habit of your own free will or it will continue to control you.

Matthew 19:26

With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible.

I would like to encourage you not to allow depression to be some kind of big terrible ugly monster that is impossible to destroy.

It is not.

Christian Depression Counseling Truth ... All you have to do is take hold of God's Hand, and ask Him for His strength in helping you to conquer this obstacle that is preventing you from serving Him as effectively as you possibly can. You are very important to Him, and to prove it, He led you here to guide you in solving this menacing problem.

He loves you and He wants you to be happy so ... Let's get started with obtaining and maintaining peace from Christian Depression.

Psalms 37:4

Delight thyself also in the LORD: and He shall give thee the desires of thine heart.

What we will be talking about in this study are some different methods you can use to get rid of depression and keep it from returning. As with any kind of medication, these methods won't work unless you actually practice them.

This is medication for the soul.

One of the best ways to combat depression is with music.

Christian Depression Counseling from the Bible
Christian Depression Help and Hope

Music Soothes the Soul

I know, I know ... Sounds too easy. But, you know very well music has the ability to uplift your spirit at times. But, is this Biblically Sound? Absolutely!!! When king Saul had an evil spirit within, anguishing him, David played the harp for him and Saul was refreshed and well. In Truth ... The evil spirit left him.

1 Samuel 16:23

And it came to pass, when the evil spirit from God was upon Saul, that David took an harp, and played with his hand: so Saul was refreshed, and was well, and the evil spirit departed from him.

So, does that mean that evil spirits cause depression? They can. Bad spirits don't like anything that is the opposite of their intent, so they'll find it uncomfortable in a joyful and holy environment ...

And they will leave.

The effects of music are usually immediate Christian Depression help.

You don't have to wait 20 minutes like you do with aspirin, or days like you do with antibiotics.

Turn it on, and let the healing begin.

It's About Time

Another way to overcome depression is to occupy your time.

Do you have too much time on your hands? Idle hands are the devil's workshop.

Ecclesiastes 10:18

By much slothfulness the building decayeth; and through idleness of the hands the house droppeth through.

If you have nothing to do, spend some time with the Holy Spirit, read some of our Christian studies, read the Bible. Avoid idle time. Buy a Bible crossword puzzle book. Plant a garden. Paint a picture. Clean a closet. There are plenty of things that will keep your mind occupied and off your problems.

It will occupy your time as well as fill you with Christian values.

You will be so busy you will not have time to to worry anymore.

That's one big problem with depression, isn't it ... Worrying about yourself?

You're not this...

You're too that...

You wish this...

You want that...

You can't this...

You worry about that...

Know how to fix that?

Become a servant for the Lord.

How to Overcome Christian Depression With Hope

Brother's Keeper

Another way to overcome depression ...

Help somebody else who has a problem.

One sure way to forget your own problem is to help someone else with theirs. Do some volunteer work. Go to a convalescent home and read to someone. Give a few of your spare hours to the soup kitchen in your city and help the homeless. Just picture Jesus smiling down on you when you do something like that?

Matthew 25:40

... Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.

Christian Depression Counseling Advice
Christian Depression Help for You

If you were doing something for Jesus, wouldn't it make you feel better than being depressed? When you know you're making a difference for others, you feel like your life really counts for something, and it automatically lifts your spirits, then your uplifted spirit spreads to God's people. Plus you can even have your own sins removed while saving a soul.

James 5:20

Let him know, that he which converteth the sinner from the error of his way shall save a soul from death, and shall hide a multitude of sins.

What could be better?

The Lord wants you to become involved with His people, that's what church is, Christians communing with one another. You help someone, and someone else helps you, and we all support one another.

Replace things that make you feel bad (like too much thinking) with things that make you feel good (do more doing).

Stop thinking, start doing!

If you don't allow yourself idle time to think about how depressed you are, then that's a pretty good solution to a huge part of the problem isn't it? Take away any opportunity for depression to sneak into your thoughts. Stop thinking about yourself, and start doing things for others.

Replace, repair, rejoice! Ask God to help you.

Jeremiah 33:3

Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and shew thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not.

Well, yeah ... But if you don't worry about all those things that you feel need worrying about in your life, who's gonna?

The answer is ... God, only, He's not gonna worry about them, He's gonna take care of them.

Is anything impossible for Him?

Matthew 19:26

With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible.

Depression is a choice to listen to lies that the devil tempts you with.

John 8:44

Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the Truth, because there is no Truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.

Believing these lies affects your spirit. However ... No matter how long you have listened to the whispered lies. You can change your spirit. Just like something has con-vinced you that you're depressed or sad or that you have a problem. You can change it by believing that you are not sad and depressed and burdened. Believe to receive.

Matthew 21:22

And all things, whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer, believing, ye shall receive.

The magic is in the belief.

If you believe you're depressed, how can you be joyous?

If you tell your spirit that you're sad, it has no choice but to listen to you because you control your spirit.

Proverbs 15:13

A merry heart maketh a cheerful countenance: but by sorrow of the heart the spirit is broken.

Our spirit reacts to our thoughts so you need to control your thoughts. The Bible tells to maintain Good thoughts.

Philippians 4:8

Whatever is true, honest, just, pure, lovely, good ... think on these things.

That is one of the best Christian Depression Counseling tidbits in the Bible. Think good thoughts. It also makes sense that changing from sad to happy would be an easier transition than from happy to sad, because happiness is a more readily accepted emotion than sadness ... For anyone ... Unless you simply don't want to be happy.

That sounds foolish at first ... Why would anyone want to be sad?

Well, for one thing ... Attention.

Ouch!

I know that can hurt those who know down deep they do act depressed at times for attention.

However ... The Truth can either hurt, or set you free.

Depends on the mind and heart of the recipient.

Depression is something that you can say good-bye to this very moment if you choose to.

You won't suffer any kind of withdrawal from giving up this bad habit right this very second.

It's not like giving up chocolate or cigarettes ... You won't crave a spell of depression if you haven't had any for a few hours or a few days.

There is no healing time required, like with other habits that leave you fragile and vulnerable while you are rehabilitating from them.

It doesn't cost a thing to give it up, and there is only one possible thing that you could possibly miss about choosing to be free from depression ... And that thing is attention.

Now, it's a good thing that you are reading this alone right now, because sometimes when we discover things for ourselves, we find them easier to accept.

For instance:

Let's say you confide in your mother about your depression. She knows you inside and out, so she identifies the problem quite easily and says with a half annoyed look on her face and a stern yet loving voice ...

Snap out of it! Grow up, you're just feeling sorry for yourself!

Immediately you feel defensive, on top of your sensitive emotional state at that time, and you deny it to yourself, and to her, insisting that there is good reason for you to be depressed.

Way, way down deep inside, so far deep that you don't even know it yourself at times, you know she's right, but your pride won't let you admit it, because, well, you'd look stupid, and none of us ever want to look stupid. It's embarrassing, humiliating, and degrading.

So, our pride locks up the Truth where we can't find it, and things get worse and worse and worse, until you feel like you need medication, or counseling, or pity, or all of the above.

Whew, what a mess. By the way, who do you think is orchestrating all this pride and stubbornness and denial, anyway? It's not you.

It's just poor choices made by listening to whispers from the enemy of your soul.

Remember?

John 8:44

Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the Truth, because there is no Truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.

When we hear and adhere to the enemy of our soul's whispers ... We become his puppet. Destroying our own life and the lives of those around us. Now, look at this Christian Depression from another angle. Let's say you never told your mother about your depression. You discover for yourself (maybe right now) that you're just feeling sorry for yourself, you face the fact that you have indeed wanted some attention and you tell yourself the Truth about it.

You feel no need to defend yourself against ... yourself ... or anyone else. Your pride has been protected because you discovered the root of the problem all on your own, instead of being told by someone else. Now, instead of the Truth hurting, the Truth has set you free! You may even boast about it.

Hey, Mom, It's a wonderful day isn't it? I was feeling quite depressed for a while and realized how childish and selfish it was, so I decided to control my own thoughts by giving the steering wheel over to God instead of letting anything else control them, and now I feel like my old self again!

(By the way, don't forget to thank God for His hand in your discovery!)

Psalms 35:9

And my soul shall be joyful in the LORD: it shall rejoice in His salvation.

I Measure Every Grief I Meet
by Emily Dickinson
1830 – 1886

I measure every Grief I meet
With narrow, probing, eyes –
I wonder if It weighs like Mine –
Or has an Easier size.

I wonder if They bore it long –
Or did it just begin –
I could not tell the Date of Mine –
It feels so old a pain –

I wonder if it hurts to live –
And if They have to try –
And whether – could They choose between –
It would not be – to die –

I note that Some – gone patient long –
At length, renew their smile –
An imitation of a Light
That has so little Oil –

I wonder if when Years have piled –
Some Thousands – on the Harm –
That hurt them early – such a lapse
Could give them any Balm –

Or would they go on aching still
Through Centuries of Nerve –
Enlightened to a larger Pain –
In Contrast with the Love –

The Grieved – are many – I am told –
There is the various Cause –
Death – is but one – and comes but once –
And only nails the eyes –

There's Grief of Want – and grief of Cold –
A sort they call "Despair" –
There's Banishment from native Eyes –
In sight of Native Air –

And though I may not guess the kind –
Correctly – yet to me
A piercing Comfort it affords
In passing Calvary –

To note the fashions – of the Cross –
And how they're mostly worn –
Still fascinated to presume
That Some – are like my own –

At first read, it is difficult to understand the phraseology that many poets of the 1800's used, so I urge you to read it again, more slowly this time, and let it sink in so you can discern if you can empathize with Emily ... or rather, with Jesus. You never know where you may find comfort, even from a poem of all things, that leads you to reaching for comfort from your Savior.
