The Prophet Obadiah in the Bible Adventure
Edom Bible Prophecy on Edom in the Bible Story Journey

This Daily Bread study is of the Book of Obadiah who was a prophet in approximately 600 B.C. His prophecy was about the destruction of Edom.

A struggle that began in the womb between twin brothers, Esau and Jacob, ends up a struggle between their descendants, the Edomites (Esau's descendants) and the Israelites (Jacob's descendants).

The Edomites refused to help Israel first during the time of wilderness wandering (Numbers 20:14-21) and later, during a time of invasion (2 Chronicles, Chapter 20). They are completely condemned by Obadiah. In this prophecy, he describes their crimes, tries their case and pronounces their judgment ... Total destruction.

Verse 1 of the Book of Obadiah is almost identical to Verse 14 of Jeremiah, Chapter 49. The Lord made it known to the prophet(s) that the heathen nations were conspiring together against Edom.

Then we are provided with a description of Edom, from the Lord's point of view. Their pride is obvious and though they think themselves a great people, others despise them. They live in the "clefts of the rock" and think that nobody is as strong as they.

Edom Bible Prophecy on Edom in the Bible Story Truth

Edom is in a mountainous region on the east side of the salt sea. This map shows the location designated in yellow near the bottom.

God's message through Obadiah is that He will bring them low. Part of their vanity is that they were wealthy. Obadiah tells them that they have a lot to lose, and they will. He even emphasizes this, "(Oh, how you are destroyed!)" and not even gleaning grapes are left. What are gleaning grapes? Gleaning grapes are what is left after harvest, which people used to leave for the poor to come and gather, meaning Edom will be stripped of its goods with none left of it. All their hidden treasures are looted.

The people who Edom thought were their friends, tricked them and betrayed them. Even their "wise men" those who were counselors, advisors, were unable to predict this demise. The mighty men of Edom as well as everyone in the mountain will be destroyed.

Let's take a look at why all this destruction was brought upon Edom (Esau's descendants).

Obadiah 1:10-21

10 For thy violence against thy brother Jacob shame shall cover thee, and thou shalt be cut off for ever.
11 In the day that thou stoodest on the other side, in the day that the strangers carried away captive his forces, and foreigners entered into his gates, and cast lots upon Jerusalem, even thou wast as one of them.
12 But thou shouldest not have looked on the day of thy brother in the day that he became a stranger; neither shouldest thou have rejoiced over the children of Judah in the day of their destruction; neither shouldest thou have spoken proudly in the day of distress.
13 Thou shouldest not have entered into the gate of my people in the day of their calamity; yea, thou shouldest not have looked on their affliction in the day of their calamity, nor have laid hands on their substance in the day of their calamity;
14 Neither shouldest thou have stood in the crossway, to cut off those of his that did escape; neither shouldest thou have delivered up those of his that did remain in the day of distress.
15 For the day of the Lord is near upon all the heathen: as thou hast done, it shall be done unto thee: thy reward shall return upon thine own head.
16 For as ye have drunk upon my holy mountain, so shall all the heathen drink continually, yea, they shall drink, and they shall swallow down, and they shall be as though they had not been.
17 But upon mount Zion shall be deliverance, and there shall be holiness; and the house of Jacob shall possess their possessions.
18 And the house of Jacob shall be a fire, and the house of Joseph a flame, and the house of Esau for stubble, and they shall kindle in them, and devour them; and there shall not be any remaining of the house of Esau; for the Lord hath spoken it.
19 And they of the south shall possess the mount of Esau; and they of the plain the Philistines: and they shall possess the fields of Ephraim, and the fields of Samaria: and Benjamin shall possess Gilead.
20 And the captivity of this host of the children of Israel shall possess that of the Canaanites, even unto Zarephath; and the captivity of Jerusalem, which is in Sepharad, shall possess the cities of the south.
21 And saviours shall come up on mount Zion to judge the mount of Esau; and the kingdom shall be the Lord's.
