Minor Prophet Prophecy
The Prophet Nahum in the Bible Path

Glad to have you back to study another book of one of the minor prophets named Nahum. Do you remember the story of Jonah? You could call the Book of Nahum the sequel to the Book of Jonah.

Luke 12:48

For unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much required.

Nineveh had been given the gift of grace and the privilege of knowing the one true God. Under Jonah's preaching, this great Gentile city had repented, and God had graciously halted His judgment against them. However a hundred years later, the prophet Nahum proclaims the downfall of this same city. The Assyrians have forgotten their revival and have returned to their habits of violence, idolatry, and arrogance. As a result, Babylon will destroy the city so that no trace of it will remain -- a prophecy fulfilled in painful detail.

The destruction of the capital city of Assyria however, is a message of comfort and consolation to Judah and all who live in fear of the cruelty of the Assyrians. The name Nahum in Hebrew means comfort or consolation.

Nahum 1:1-2

1 The burden of Nineveh. The book of the vision of Nahum the Elkoshite.
2 God is jealous, and the Lord revengeth; the Lord revengeth, and is furious; the Lord will take vengeance on His adversaries, and He reserveth wrath for His enemies.

When you get a message from God, and it begins like this, it'll get your attention, that's for certain! Now Nahum gives a very vivid description of God's might and anger to the people of Nineveh, as to tell them, God isn't someone whose feathers you want to ruffle. You really want Him on your side and after trying His patience once, you ought to tread softly ... Or else!

Minor Prophet Warning
The Prophet Nahum in the Bible Danger

Together, let's look at this perfect description of our Lord's power and might and the reverence and respect He commands:

Nahum 1:3-8

3 The Lord is slow to anger, and great in power, and will not at all acquit the wicked: the Lord hath His way in the whirlwind and in the storm, and the clouds are the dust of His feet.
4 He rebuketh the sea, and maketh it dry, and drieth up all the rivers: Bashan languisheth, and Carmel, and the flower of Lebanon languisheth.
5 The mountains quake at Him, and the hills melt, and the earth is burned at His presence, yea, the world, and all that dwell therein.
6 Who can stand before His indignation? and who can abide in the fierceness of His anger? His fury is poured out like fire, and the rocks are thrown down by Him.
7 The Lord is good, a strong hold in the day of trouble; and He knoweth them that trust in Him.
8 But with an overrunning flood He will make an utter end of the place thereof, and darkness shall pursue His enemies.

In God's words Nahum tells the the people of Nineveh that they won't get away with their vile ways. Get a feel for the wrath that will be unleashed on Nineveh if they don't heed God's warning through the Prophet Nahum.

Minor Prophet Truth
The Prophet Nahum in the Bible Concern

Nahum 1:9-10

9 What [foolish things] do ye imagine against the Lord? He will make an utter end [He will completely destroy your plans and ideas]: affliction shall not rise up the second time.
10 For while they be folden [woven] together as thorns, and while they are drunken as drunkards, they shall be devoured as stubble fully dry.

The Prophet Nahum makes it plain that these people are very deviant. You can almost picture them from his description, huddled together, planning to do evil, but they won't escape they fury of the Lord. The next verses speak of Sennacherib, who was the king at the time, and his army.

Nahum 1:10-11

11 There is one come out of thee, that imagineth evil against the Lord, a wicked counsellor.
12 Thus saith the Lord; Though they be quiet, and likewise many, yet thus shall they be cut down, when he shall pass through ...

Now comes good news for Jerusalem who was in bondage under Assyria at that time.

Nahum 1:12-13

12 ... Though I have afflicted thee, I will afflict thee no more.
13 For now will I break his [the king of Assyria's] yoke from off thee, and will burst thy bonds in sunder.

You will find an account of Sennacherib's death in The Book of 2 Kings 19:35-37 and also in The Book of Isaiah 37:36-38.

The Prophet Nahum in the Bible and Nineveh

Next the Prophet Nahum tells Nineveh that God has made the entire city barren, that none of their families will ever bear children again. Their images will be destroyed and they will be buried in the house of their gods.

And again, Nahum gives the people of Judah comforting words from God, the freedom they longed for.

Nahum 1:15

Behold upon the mountains the feet of him that bringeth good tidings, that publisheth peace! O Judah, keep thy solemn feasts, perform thy vows: for the wicked shall no more pass through thee; he is utterly cut off.
