Joshua's Stone Memorial Bible Verses
Jordan River Stone Memorial in the Bible Event

Glad to have you back at Daily Bread to continue our study of the book of Joshua. Where were we? Well, the children of Israel had just crossed the Jordan River into the Promised Land, and we were wondering about those men who were selected (one out of each of the tribes of Israel), and what they were to do.

The Lord told Joshua to tell each of them to take a stone out of the midst of the Jordan, where the priests stood with the ark, and carry them on their shoulder to the place where they stayed the first night.

Each of the stones represented a tribe and Joshua explained that it would be a memorial, so that when their children asked what the stones meant, they shall tell them the story of when the Lord parted the waters of the Jordan River for them to cross into the Promised Land. Joshua also set up twelve stones in the midst of the Jordan where the priests stood with the ark.

Stone Memorial in the Bible Miracle

Just imagine the dedication of those priests carrying the ark, that stood in the midst of the Jordan, holding it until more than 600,000 people crossed the River!

About 40,000 of those were of the tribes of Reuben, Gad and half the tribe of Manasseh, which were men prepared for war, who crossed ahead of the children of Israel.

On that day, the people of Israel respected Joshua as they respected Moses, because the Lord magnified him in the sight of all Israel.

Stone Memorial in the Bible Timing

After all of Israel had crossed the Jordan entirely, Joshua, at the Lord's command told the priests who were carrying the ark to come up out of the midst of the Jordan, and when the soles of their feet were on dry land, the waters of the Jordan returned to their place.

Guess when this event happened. The tenth day of the first month, which is also the celebration of Passover. So, it was 40 years, to the day, that the children of Israel wandered in the wilderness, from the day they left the land of Goshen in Egypt, until they crossed the Jordan into the Promised Land.

They camped in Gilgal, in the east border of Jericho, where Joshua set up the stones that they took out of the Jordan, and he reminded everyone that when their children ask what the stones stand for, to tell them the story of how God parted the Red Sea and the River Jordan for the children of Israel to cross so that all the people of the Earth would know the might of the Lord and that they would honor Him forever.
