The Tower of Babel Bible Story Concerns

Hello again, Daily Bread partakers! Well, we're probably getting to the point about now where a lot of people get bored with reading their Bibles. They suffer through a chapter or two and then figure they made a valiant effort to read it through, but maybe they'll try again next year.

Well, congratulations! Give yourself a big pat on the back because you know this time is different.

Let's retrace our steps a little bit before we go on with this story. After the great flood and Noah's Ark saving 8 souls, we have the earth being populated by the descendants of Noah's three sons. They all speak the same language and they're starting to spread out on the earth.

Last time, we talked a little bit about the trouble that Ham started. Well, it looks like trouble is running in the family, because Ham had a grandson named Nimrod. And Nimrod was a hunter. He was strong so people followed him. One has to imagine that being strong was much more of an asset back then, since security was nothing like it is today with a camera virtually everywhere to keep things sort of peaceful. At any rate, Nimrod started a kingdom called Babel.

Being the king of Babel, Nimrod and the people who followed him, decided to build a city and a tower that could reach up to Heaven. They wanted to make a name for themselves, so they wouldn't be all scattered out and a bunch of nobodies. They wanted fame.

This is a picture of what the Tower of Babel may have looked like.

The Tower of Babel Bible Story Danger

There are many sources that suggest that Nimrod and these rebellious people would shoot arrows from the tower into the clouds. They claimed the arrows would return to earth dripping with the blood of angels. Is that creepy or what?

God came down to see the tower. And God said, If the people do things like this because they all speak one language, what will stop them from doing more bad things? There goes God, talking to His Holy Spirit again. Well, it didn't take long for Him to formulate a plan. He made them all speak different languages so they couldn't understand each other, that way they couldn't finish the tower or gain the fame that they wanted. You've got to admit, God has a fantastic sense of humor.

Can you imagine them all, one minute, just chattering away and the next minute not being able to understand a word their friends and families were saying. No wonder it was called the tower of Babel, which was in Babylon, also known today as Iraq.

Then God scattered those people around the earth, just like He planned in the first place. And that's why people in different countries speak different languages.

Here's a very interesting thing to note ... One day we will all speak one language again, as at the beginning:

Genesis 11:1

And the whole earth was of one language, and of one speech.

Zephaniah 3:9

For then will I turn to the people a pure language, that they may all call upon the name of the LORD, to serve him with one consent.

What is the Tower of Babel Bible Study Summary
The Tower of Babel Bible Story Outcome

Cool, huh? Now, sometimes it is natural that you may want to relate Bible stories with things that happen in today's day and age. Well, we see that back then, they wanted to reach into Heaven by way of a tower. Today, we go beyond our world in space ships and the likes. Does God still send messages when people overstep their boundaries? I'm sure you can think of a few examples. The lesson wasn't learned the first time, that God put man on earth for a reason. The commandment that He gave to man was to take care of the earth, but man cannot seem to resist but to go nosing around where he doesn't belong. There are a lot more interesting stories ahead, come back and enjoy the fun!
