Grace and Law Bible Debate
Eternal Grace Versus Law Bible Quest
Glad to have you here again to share more Daily Bread! In the last chapter we studied about a disagreement that Paul had with Peter, but before that we found out that someone is trying to lure the Galatians into believing that law and works is the answer to salvation, instead of Faith and Grace.
As you may well imagine, the disappointment in Paul's heart is deep because of this deception. Let's read along as Paul reveals his emotions about this matter to his beloved friends and shows them that they have been tricked. As we often do at Daily Bread, we have put some notes in brackets to help you understand things more clearly in our modern day language.
1 O foolish Galatians, who hath bewitched [charmed] you,
that ye should not obey the truth, before whose eyes Jesus Christ
hath been evidently set forth, crucified among you? [You used to see
clearly that Jesus Christ died for you.]
2 This only would I learn of you, Received ye the Spirit
by the works of the law [by trying to abide by Jewish law], or by the
hearing of faith?
3 Are ye so foolish [crazy]? having begun in the Spirit,
are ye now made perfect by the flesh? [You were not spiritually free
by the law before, and you think the law makes you better Christians
now?]
4 Have ye suffered so many things [for the Gospel] in
vain? if it be yet in vain. [Now you're going to throw it all away?]
5 He [God] therefore that ministereth to you the Spirit,
and worketh miracles among you, doeth He it by the works of the law,
or by the hearing of faith?
6 Even as Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to
him for righteousness.
7 Know ye therefore that they which are of faith, the same
are the children of Abraham. [You should follow Abraham's example and
choose faith, not law, because God thought it righteous.]
8 And the scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the
heathen through faith, preached before the gospel unto Abraham,
saying, In thee shall all nations be blessed [Genesis
12:3].
9 So then they which be of faith are blessed with faithful
Abraham.
10 For as many as are of the works of the law are under
the curse: for it is written, Cursed is every one that continueth not
in all things which are written in the book of the law to do them [Deuteronomy
27:26].
11 But that no man is justified by the law in the sight of
God, it is evident: for, The just shall live by faith [Habakkuk
2:4].
12 And the law is not of faith: but, The man that doeth
them shall live in them [Leviticus
18:5].
13 Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law,
being made a curse for us [He took our curse upon Himself]: for it is
written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree [Deuteronomy
21:23]:
14 That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles
through Jesus Christ; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit
through faith.
15 Brethren, I speak after the manner of men; Though it be
but a man's covenant, yet if it be confirmed, no man disannulleth, or
addeth thereto. [Even a covenant between mere men cannot be broken.]
16 Now to Abraham and his seed were the promises made. He
saith not, And to seeds, as of many; but as of one, And to thy seed,
which is Christ.
17 And this I say, that the covenant, that was confirmed
before of God in Christ, the law, which was four hundred and thirty
years after, cannot disannul, that it should make the promise of none
effect.
18 For if the inheritance be of the law, it is no more of
promise: but God gave it to Abraham by promise.
19 Wherefore then serveth the law? [So what good is the
law and what purpose does it serve?] It was added because of
transgressions [sin], till the seed [Jesus] should come to whom the
promise was made; and it was ordained by Angels in the hand of a
mediator [Moses].
20 Now a mediator is not a mediator of one, but God is one.
Grace and Law Bible Explanation
Eternal Grace Versus Law Bible Blessing
This is how The Living Bible's translation of Verse 19-20:
19 Well then, why were the laws given? They were added
after the promise was given, to show men how guilty they are of
breaking God’s laws. But this system of law was to last only until
the coming of Christ, the Child to whom God's promise was made. (And
there is this further difference. God gave his laws to angels to give
to Moses, who then gave them to the people;
20 but when God gave his promise to Abraham, he did it by
himself alone, without angels or Moses as go-betweens.)
Now on to Verse 21:
21 Is the law then against the promises of God? God
forbid: for if there had been a law given which could have
given life, verily righteousness should have been by the law [God
wouldn't have given us a different way to be saved].
22 But the scripture hath concluded all under sin [we are
all prisoners while under law], that the promise by faith of Jesus
Christ might be given to them that believe [the only way to escape
law is faith in Jesus].
23 But before faith came, we were kept under the law, shut
up unto [protected until] the faith which should afterwards be
revealed.
24 Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto
Christ, that we might be justified by faith.
25 But after [now] that faith is come, we are no longer
under a schoolmaster.
26 For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ
Jesus.
27 For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ
have put on Christ [we are enveloped by Him].
28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond
nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in
Christ Jesus.
29 And if ye be Christ's, then are ye Abraham's seed, and
heirs according to the promise.

Don't forget, the reason why Paul is explaining all this is because someone else has convinced these Christians that the old way of law and works is the way to go. You may want to remind yourself, whenever you read from the Old Testament that it has been replaced with the New Testament which is the New Covenant.
Come on back again and share more Daily Bread as next time we continue our study of Paul's letter to the Galatians, right here. See you soon.
