The meaning of the name Amos is "burden bearer," and the prophet Amos did just that, revealing the message of the Lord that Israel was living dangerously and judgment would be the result if they didn't change their ways.
Israel, however, was living in a time of prosperity, under the rule of an idol worshiping king and they thought it was unlikely that anything bad would come of Amos prophecy, after all ... Business was booming, things were good, people were optimistic. Amos urges them to repent and warns them of God's discipline if they resist.Improbable as Amos' prophecy sounded, within fifty years, the kingdom was completely destroyed.
Looking back on our own lives, it's usually when things are hunky dory that shortly afterward comes destruction if we lose sight of God.
Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall.
The prophecy of Amos is a good lesson for all of us.
