Dear Lady - 2 John Bible Study

Who is the Elect Lady

This is our extremely endearing and perfectly precious Dear Lady exploration taking an in-depth look into the epistle found in 2 John to the elect lady and her children. Who is the Elect Lady? Come find out in this 2 John Bible summary which will truly bring a smile to the lips and heart.

So glad you are here to share more Daily Bread. This 2 John Bible study is very brief because the second epistle written by John is short but powerful, and seems almost like an excerpt from John's first epistle.

But, before we begin this 2 John Bible summary, we have a Daily Bread Stick to partake of. Have you ever noticed that in the Bible, countries, cities and groups of people are oft times referred to as being feminine? Other times, the Bible is speaking of actual people. Let us begin with an intriguing Biblical example:

Jesus refers to Himself as the Groom and the Church (Christians) as being His Bride which is a female noun. Check out the Marriage Supper of the Lamb study to better understand this Spiritual Bride and Groom concept.

Read Revelation chapter 12 about the woman who was clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and had a crown of twelve stars. Who is the woman in the wilderness in Revelation chapter 12?

Is the female pronoun referring to Israel or the Church? Both are called by female pronouns in the Bible. In short, the Bible uses female pronouns to describe cities, groups of people and even the Church.

Who are the offspring (Spiritual Children) in the last verse in Revelation chapter 12 which says ... And the dragon (Satan) was wroth with the woman, and went to make war with the remnant of her seed, which keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ. Sounds like Christian believers.

Perhaps John did the same in the 2 John Bible book and the Elect Lady (Bride or Woman) and her Children (Offspring - Remnant of her seed) are actually a specific Church and its congregation of believers who John was sending a letter, much like he and other Apostles did. With that ideology in mind, let's ponder and pray about it as we continue our 2 John Bible study.

The Dear Lady Epistle

Who is the Elect Lady and Her Children

In John's letter, he begins by saying:

From the elder (which is John himself), To the elect lady and her children, whom I love in the truth; and not only I, but also, all those who have known the truth; for the truth's sake, which lives in us, and shall be with us for ever.

The question of ... Who is the Elect Lady is the topic of much debate by Religious scholars. The elect lady and her children, could be a woman and her kids, or it could be a Church (Group of early Christians) and the children could be the believers therein. John addresses the dear lady as one who he, and all those who have known the truth (believers), love and adore.

Grace be with you, mercy, and peace, from God the Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of the Father, in truth and love. I was very glad when I heard about your children walking in truth, as the Father commanded. And now I ask you, lady, not as though I wrote a new commandment to you, but that (commandment) which we had from the beginning, that we love one another.

The Dear Lady Debate

Who is the Elect Lady in the 2 John Bible Letter

Sooooooooo, we've got either a family, or a city, walking uprightly, and John compliments this, but knowing the world, he feels compelled to throw in a little reminder. "Uh, you've heard this before," he says, "but it really bears repeating."

And this is what love is: that we walk after His commandments. Because many deceivers have entered into the world, who don't confess that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh. This is a deceiver and an antichrist.

John points out here, that love must be wise because there are lots of false teachers around who want you to fall in love with their ideas, and that kind of love is not true.

The Dear Lady Interpretation

Who is the Elect Lady - 2 John Bible Facts

Be careful, and support one another, that we don't lose the things that we've built, but that we receive a full reward. Whoever transgresses, and doesn't remain in the doctrine (teaching) of Christ, does not belong to God. He that remains in the doctrine of Christ, he belongs to both the Father and the Son.

If anybody comes to you, and doesn't bring this doctrine, don't welcome him into your house, or bid him God speed (success, or a prosperous journey): Because whoever bids him God speed, shares in his evil deeds.

Have you ever done that before, not realizing what you were doing? Someone makes you an offer or proposes something that you know is wrong, and so you won't seem rude to them, you say something like, "No thanks, but good luck." It doesn't occur to us until we read what John wrote, that in wishing them luck, we're being rude to God. Who are we representing here, anyway?

The Dear Lady Identity

Who is the Elect Lady - 2 John Summary

John closes his letter, saying: Because I have so many things to say to you, I wish not to do it with paper and ink, but I hope to come to you, and speak face to face, that our joy may be full. The children of thy elect (chosen) sister greet thee. Amen.

Again, here, John could be talking about a woman's nieces and nephews, or the people of a neighboring city.

Imagine this letter as being from John and is written to Christians today. He would be saying, If you are walking uprightly, Great! But be aware, there are antichrists (People against Christians) out there and you do not want to fall victim to their deception.

Do not confuse the antichrist entities in John 2 Bible letter to CON-fuse you. These antichrists are not the same as the Antichrist who is coming according to Bible prophecy.

Let me remind you, love one another, which is equivalent to God's commandments. In love, however, be discerning, there are many who would love to deceive you. The Bible says that Love will wax cold in the last days.

Be sure to have fellowship with God and with other Christians and stand up for your faith. I've got a lot more to tell you, but I won't have enough ink for it all, so I'm planning to visit. Everyone here sends their best.

Maybe John sent this letter to the same group of Christians that he sent his first epistle, and these were the things that he thought they needed encouragement about. Maybe it was sent to a different place altogether, and these were the particular needs of that place.

Whatever the case, the love that John has for the Lord is clear by the manner in which he is spreading the Gospel of Jesus and urging all those he encounters to stand firm in our faith and love one another. The message still reaches potential Christians even today by the 2 John Summary in the Bible.

Who is the Elect Lady 2 John Bible Conclusion

The 2nd Epistle of John was written to the elect lady and her children (2 John 1:1). There is a disagreement on who John is addressing as being the elect lady. Was it a family, a specific group of people or was John writing the Church and its believers.

At either rate, the question of, who is the Elect Lady in the 2 John Bible summary is not as important as the 2 John Bible message which is now a warning to the Christians about false teachings urging Christians to continue in love and truth.

Congratulations on completing another book of the New Testament, and next we have another brief letter from John, so come back soon and join in as we find out what his message will be next, right here at Daily Bread.
