Christian Repentance Bible Study Quest
Biblical Repentance in the Bible Explanation

Happy to have you here for a warm slice of Daily Bread. We're about halfway through with our study of Paul's second letter to the people of Corinth and you could say that most of it has been Paul's response to some rumors that have been wrongfully spoken of him and those who are close to him in his ministry.

This is something we all face at one time or another in our Christian walk, so as you read, take a mental note of the patience that Paul exhibits while dealing with this. In fact, if you look back to Chapter 6 and read through the list of things that he says make us worthy ministers of God, you'll see that he practices what he preaches.

At the end of Chapter 6, he reminds us of what God said about being separate. Separate yourself from things that aren't supportive of your beliefs, in particular, unbelievers. Be different. Jesus was different, and we're different, and we will be rejected, as He was. And when we are, it's important that we remain worthy ministers of God, to receive His promises.

Biblical Repentance in the Bible Facts

Surely God wants sinners to be saved, and He does not mean that you should shun anyone who isn't a believer, otherwise nobody would ever learn the Truth of Christianity. But to keep company of them to a point where it influences your faith in any way is what God wants us to distance ourselves from.

Now Paul continues:

2 Corinthians 7:1-7

1 Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.
2 Receive us; we have wronged no man, we have corrupted no man, we have defrauded no man.
3 I speak not this to condemn you: for I have said before, that ye are in our hearts to die and live with you.
4 Great is my boldness of speech toward you, great is my glorying of you: I am filled with comfort, I am exceeding joyful in all our tribulation.
5 For, when we were come into Macedonia, our flesh had no rest, but we were troubled on every side; without were fightings, within were fears.
6 Nevertheless God, that comforteth those that are cast down, comforted us by the coming of Titus;
7 And not by his coming only, but by the consolation wherewith he was comforted in you, when he told us your earnest desire, your mourning, your fervent mind toward me; so that I rejoiced the more.

The Corinthians are very important to Paul, and he tells them again, in his loving way. He asks them, "Receive us." He is obviously concerned, because the people of Corinth have heard many lies, and once you hear them, you can't unhear them, so naturally, he feels compelled to elaborate on his love and commitment to them. Also, notice that he has found Titus once again!

You may notice that he mentions there in Verse 7 that Titus told Paul that the Corinthians were sincerely worried about Paul. Yes, this is the same letter that in the previous chapters, he was admonishing them for rumor telling, etc. First of all, not all of the people there believed those rumors. Probably not even the majority of them. Secondly, this letter is 13 chapters long ... Certainly Paul didn't write this at one sitting, and many events and issues had most likely arisen and resolved throughout the time period between the start and the finish of the execution of this lovely letter. Many a Christian visitor had probably come and gone and shared with Paul the goings on in this city that he loved.

Biblical Repentance in the Bible Quotes

Here's a Daily Bread Crumb to snack on. This epistle that we're studying now, although it's called 2 Corinthians, was probably not the second and last letter that Paul had written to the people of Corinth, but is the second letter to the Corinthians chosen to be included in the Bible by religious leaders way back when.

A previous letter from Paul, (perhaps the First Epistle of Paul the Apostle to the Corinthians) made the Corinthians sad, and Paul tells them that he doesn't regret that he made them sad, because it caused them to repent, and it's better be sad for a little while, and get back on the right track with God, than to be sad forever without repentance and resulting in death.

2 Corinthians 7:11

For behold this selfsame thing, that ye sorrowed after a godly sort, what carefulness it wrought in you, yea, what clearing of yourselves, yea, what indignation, yea, what fear, yea, what vehement desire, yea, what zeal, yea, what revenge! In all things ye have approved yourselves to be clear in this matter.

Biblical Repentance in the Bible Meaning

Paul, in essence is saying, Golly, I made you all sad for a bit, but look what the final result was! You repented, you took it to God, and the final outcome is ... Grace!

Lastly in this chapter Paul explains, I didn't write to you because of the one that did the wrong, nor the one who allowed the wrong, but that our love and care for you might be clear to you and God. So we were relieved in your comfort and even happier for the joy of Titus because his spirit was refreshed by you. If I bragged to him about you, I'm not ashamed. Just as we told you the truth, we truthfully bragged to him, and he is even fonder of you when he remembers your respect and hospitality toward him. I'm happy to say I have confidence in you in all things.

Biblical Repentance in the Bible Summary

That's a pretty generous and deserving compliment, don't you agree? When someone does something good, it's important for that fact to be recognized, and Paul with thanksgiving, expresses this to those in Corinth who repented about their doubts in him.
