Christian Spiritual Gifts From God

Aha! There you are! Glad to have you back again for today's Daily Bread. Today you're in for a special treat, because this part of Paul's letter talks about spiritual gifts. What are your spiritual gifts? That's a question that you can answer by asking yourself, What can I do to best serve the Lord? What opportunities and talents has He given to me that I can use to glorify Him? What are the Spiritual Gifts in the Bible that can be used to better serve Him?

No matter what your own personal spiritual gift(s) are, they're important to God. Let me give you something to think about. Let's say you take the ingredient salt out of all your food. Blahhhhh! But, it's only salt. Most of the time it dissolves and you can't even see it, but it sure does make a difference. Think of your spiritual gifts as an important ingredient, no matter how small or how extensive they may be.

This is a wonderful explanation by Paul, of how we're all united in Christ and how we all should depend on and appreciate one another. Let's take a look.

What are the Spiritual Gifts in the Bible Verses?

1 Corinthians 12:1-11

1 Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I would not have you ignorant [I have information for you].
2 Ye know that ye were Gentiles, carried away unto [convinced to believe in] these dumb idols, even as ye were led.
3 Wherefore I give [want] you to understand, that no man speaking by the Spirit of God calleth Jesus accursed: and that no man can say that Jesus is the Lord, but by [unless he is speaking by] the Holy Ghost.
4 Now there are diversities [different kinds] of gifts, but the same Spirit.
5 And there are differences of administrations, but the same Lord.
6 And there are diversities of operations [mighty works], but it is the same God which worketh all in all.
7 But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal. [The Holy Spirit reveals Himself freely through these gifts for the benefit of everyone.]
8 For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit;
9 To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit;
10 To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; [speaking in tongues] to another the interpretation of tongues:
11 But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally [individually] as He will.

1 Corinthians 12:12-17

12 For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of that one body, being many, are one body: so also is Christ.
13 For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body [adopted into the same family], whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.
14 For the body is not one member, but many.
15 If the foot shall say, Because I am not the hand, I am not [part] of the body; is it therefore not [part] of the body?
16 And if the ear shall say, Because I am not the eye, I am not of the body; is it therefore not of the body?
17 If the whole body were an eye, where were the hearing [how would it hear]? If the whole were hearing, where were the smelling [how would it smell]?

What are the Spiritual Gifts in the Bible For?

1 Corinthians 12:18-23

18 But now hath God set the members every one of them in the body, as it hath pleased Him.
19 And if they were all one member, where were the body? [If they were all a single part, how could it be a body?]
20 But now are they many members, yet but [still] one body.
21 And the eye cannot say unto the hand, I have no need of thee: nor again the head to the feet, I have no need of you.
22 Nay, much more those members of the body, which seem to be more feeble, are necessary:
23 And those members of the body, which we think to be less honourable [or perhaps shameful], upon these we bestow more abundant honour [we adorn them with clothing]; and our uncomely parts have more abundant comeliness.

Christian Spiritual Gifts From God Details

We decorate our bodies with fancy clothing. The parts which decency and morality require us to hide, we not only cover, but we do our best to dress them to the hilt. In the meanwhile, we leave our faces uncovered. The point being, in the same way, we shouldn't think less of our fellow Christians who are less "favored" than others with spiritual gifts.

1 Corinthians 12:24-31

24 For our comely [handsome] parts have no need: but God hath tempered [arranged] the body together, having given more abundant honour to that part which lacked.
25 [So] That there should be no schism in the body; but that the members should have the same care one for another.
26 And whether one member suffer, all the members suffer with it; or one member be honoured, all the members rejoice with it.
27 Now ye are the body of Christ, and members in particular [each is a particular part].
28 And God hath set some [to serve] in the church, first apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, governments, diversities of tongues.
29 Are all apostles? are all prophets? are all teachers? are all workers of miracles?
30 Have all the gifts of healing? do all speak with tongues? do all interpret?
31 But covet [desire] earnestly the best gifts: and yet shew I unto you a more excellent way.

Biblical Spiritual Gifts Trivia Question ... What did Paul mean by that last verse? Perhaps this was a bridge to his next topic. Matthew Henry explains it this way:

By giving them the hint of a more excellent way, namely, of charity, of mutual love and good-will. This was the only right way to quiet and cement them, and make their gifts turn to the advantage and edification of the church. This would render them kind to each other, and concerned for each other, and therefore calm their spirits, and put an end to their little piques and contests, their disputes about precedency. Those would appear to be in the foremost rank, according to the apostle, who had most of true Christian love. Note, True charity is greatly to be preferred to the most glorious gifts. To have the heart glow with mutual love is vastly better than to glare with the most pompous titles, offices, or powers.
