Child of God - Step #6

The Faith of a Child

It's nice to welcome you back!

Did you know that you can make a difference in the world for God, right now? Yes, you! I'd like to tell you about some people from the Bible who were children when they made a difference for God.

1 Samuel 3:1

And the child Samuel ministered unto the LORD before Eli. And the word of the LORD was precious in those days; there was no open vision.

Samuel was a child when the Lord spoke to him and gave him messages to give to all of Israel.

Jeremiah 1:6

Then said I, Ah, Lord GOD! behold, I cannot speak: for I am a child.

Jeremiah was a child when God sent him to speak to the people of Israel and warn them because they weren't obeying God. God told Jeremiah what would happen to them if they didn't change their ways, and Jeremiah delivered God's message to the people of Israel.

1 Samuel 17:33

And Saul said to David, Thou art not able to go against this Philistine to fight with him: for thou art but a youth, and he a man of war from his youth.

David was just a boy when he killed the giant Goliath.

So, how can you make a difference? By learning all you can about Christianity and living The Way that Jesus taught us in the Bible. With the way the world is today, God will be calling lots of young people to do things for Him, and who do you think He will choose? That's right ... Faithful Christians ... Even children.

I have a question to ask you ... Who do you think has stronger faith ... A child or an adult? We'll find out what Jesus thinks about that in just a minute, but first let's talk about being a child. There's a big difference between being childish and being as a child. When a person is being childish, that means they are without understanding or without truth, but being as a child is being innocent and accepting the truth with an open heart.

You probably remember that we talked a little bit about the Holy Spirit when we talked about the three parts of God, but chances are, you don't understand a lot about Him, and that may be because you've never gotten to know Him. Even though you can't see Him, He really is there. He's not like an imaginary vapor that floats around ... He's real! Do you ever have the feeling that He's right there with you? Did you know that if you invite Him, He will accept your invitation?

The first thing you need to do, is have faith.

Matthew 18:1-4

1 At the same time came the disciples unto Jesus, saying, Who is the greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven?
2 And Jesus called a little child unto Him, and set him in the midst of them,
3 And said, Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the Kingdom of Heaven.
4 Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven.

You must have faith as a child to enter the Kingdom of Heaven.

It looks like the answer to our question is that children must have stronger faith, because you need to have faith like a child to get into Heaven! Doubt is the enemy of faith.

Have you ever known a child who had an invisible friend? Have you ever seen such faith? So, no matter how old you get, don't ever lose the child inside of you. We know that imaginary friends are just imaginary, but even though the Holy Spirit is invisible, He is not imaginary, He is real!

Sooooo, how do you make friends with the Holy Spirit? How does a person get to know Him? He already knows you, so there's no need to feel bashful. The first thing you need to do, is invite Him, because He is a gentleman, and He won't visit without knowing He's welcome. Just like you, He doesn't like to be ignored ... He has feelings too, and if you ignore Him, He won't stay.

Forever Friends

Have some milk and cookies with the Holy Spirit. Make a chair available for Him. What do you talk about with a friend over milk and cookies? He IS your friend, talk to Him about everyday life things. Read Him this step that you're reading. Tell Him your thoughts about it. Tell Him about your day ahead. Ask Him to come with you to school. Become aware of His presence. If you have to take your mind off of Him to do your work, He understands, just like any friend would, but in your mind, know He's there. Invite Him with you on your way home from school. Start planning to do things together. Ask Him to read the Bible with you every night. Ask Him to open your heart to understanding the Bible better.

Our minds are always thinking of something. We are always thinking to ourselves. Have you ever tried to think of nothing? It's impossible. So, what if you started telling your thoughts to the Holy Spirit? What if, in your mind, instead of just thinking thoughts to yourself, you told them to the Holy Spirit? Ask Him to guide your thoughts and ideas, and help you with answers to questions that you have about anything. If you give your thoughts to Him, and by being aware that He is present with you, you're showing your faith and trust in Him, which is the foundation of friendship. Watch how your life changes when you include your new friend, the Holy Spirit, in everything you do.

Proverbs 16:3

Commit thy works unto the Lord, and thy thoughts shall be established.

If you include the Lord in everything you do, your plans will succeed.

A friend is also someone who listens. Open your heart and listen to the Holy Spirit. Ask Him to speak to you. Have real conversations with Him. He talks to you through the Bible. If you have a question, ask Him in Jesus' name, then open your Bible to any page and point your finger without looking, then read. His answer may not make sense to you at first, but at the right time, He'll guide you in learning His answer. He also talks through other people to give us understanding. He talks through your conscience by making you aware that you should do the right thing. Sometimes we fail to recognize the Holy Spirit speaking to us in the flicker of a light bulb, goose bumps, brainstorms, a person's smile, the words of a song ... There are all kinds of ways that the Holy Spirit will and does speak to you. How did the Spirit of God speak to the people in the Bible? Through thunder, lightning, casting lots, scripture, prophets, a still small voice ... Open your mind to Him, allow Him in.

Always At Your Side

The Holy Spirit lives inside of you.

One thing to remember is that even though the Holy Spirit lives inside of you, He doesn't belong to you ... You belong to Him. He also lives outside of you. He's everywhere and knows everything ... He is God's Spirit. It's not silly to know that He can be with you whether you're preparing a snack, out fishing, after you're tucked in at night, watching the television, looking at wildflowers, cleaning the garage, during a sleepless night, or anytime and anywhere you invite Him, as long as you're doing something good. The Holy Spirit won't hang around if you choose bad.

Well, I bet your new friend, the Holy Spirit is waiting to get acquainted with you, so that's the end of our lesson for today!
