Child of God - Step #1

Do the Right Thing

Welcome to the 1st Step of the Child of God program!

We're going to start by talking about something very important ... And it's a way of making the world a better place for God. We're going to talk about making choices. Did you know that God lets you make your own decisions about things?

You may be thinking that your parents make a lot of your choices for you, but that's the job that God gave to them. (Remember, we talked about Proverbs 22:6 last time.) God wants them to do that, so that when you get older, and the decisions that you have to make get harder, you'll be prepared to make the right choices.

God wants you to make the right choices and to always do the right thing.

Proverbs 20:11

Even a child is known by his doings, whether his work be pure, and whether it be right.

Everybody, even kids are remembered for what they do. We don't want to be known for doing wrong, especially in God's eyes.

This is very true, isn't it? When you think about any person you know or have ever heard of, the first thing that you automatically think about is the good things they've done, or the bad things. And that's the way people think about you too.

Almost every thing you do is a choice. You can choose if you will brush your teeth after you eat breakfast or not. You can choose if you will take out the trash or do the dishes, if those are your chores. You can choose if you will do your schoolwork or not. You can choose if you will be happy or sad even.

If you choose not to do any of these things, you know what will happen. If you don't brush your teeth, you may get cavities or you may even lose your teeth. If you don't do your chores, you may not get your allowance, or your parents may get mad at you ... Or both! If you don't do your schoolwork, you will get bad grades and you may lose privileges or you may not learn something that you need to know. If you choose to be sad, you won't be able to serve God the very best you can, so that choice not only hurts you, but God, and all the people that love you too.

Proverbs 16:20

He that handleth a matter wisely shall find good: and whoso trusteth in the LORD, happy is he.

If you make wise decisions, you will find that good things happen, and people that trust in the Lord, are happy.

Each and every day, every Child of God has hundreds, even thousands of decisions to make. Every word you speak is a choice. In your mind, you choose what you're going to say. Your words can be helpful, hurtful, kind, mean, funny, serious, truth or lies. Everything you do, or everything you don't do is a choice that you make of whether or not to do the right thing.

How do you know what the right thing is? Well, God gave each of us something called a conscience. It's God's Spirit, the Holy Spirit inside of you, and your conscience tells you the right choice.

Psalms 32:8

I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go: I will guide thee with mine eye.

God will show you the right thing to do and guide you. But you still have the choice of what to do, even though He shows you. If you ask the Holy Spirit to help you, but you don't follow His direction, you will feel that wrong feeling inside of you, and that's because you didn't listen to your conscience.

Usually, we go through our day, and we just naturally do the right thing most of the time, but there are times when we make bad choices. The next time you have a decision to make and you start thinking about doing the wrong thing, stop and ask God's Spirit, the Holy Spirit, to help you to do the right thing.

Did you know that you even choose the things you think about? Sometimes we don't know where some silly thoughts come from, but they can turn into bad thoughts if you keep on thinking about them. Whenever you have a thought like that, just tell that thought that you'd rather think of good thoughts instead, and then think good thoughts! Be stubborn about it too, keep trying until your thoughts go to good things. Sometimes it can take a while, but ask the Holy Spirit to guide your thoughts. You can say "Holy Spirit, in the name of Jesus, please help me to think good thoughts." God will sure be proud of you!

Proverbs 19:21

There are many devices in a man's heart; nevertheless the counsel of the LORD, that shall stand.

That means, people come up with a lot of different ideas, but what the LORD wants is the best thing.

Have you ever heard the story of Jonah? He was a prophet of God, and he made a bad choice once. There is a book in the Bible about him. Here is a little poem about it.

Jonah and the Whale

In Nineveh, the people there
Were wicked and they didn't care
It made God mad
That they were bad
But He decided to be fair

Jonah was who God picked out
To tell what He was mad about
"Get up right now
I'll show you how"
But Jonah soon began to pout

See, Jonah didn't want to go
He tried to hide from God, uh-oh
He found a ship
And took a trip
So God sent out a wind to blow

Well Jonah thought he'd nap a bit
Just as the storm began to hit
The captain said
"Hey sleepy head
Wake up, the boat's about to split!"

Now Jonah knew he was to blame
To hide from God is not a game
It wasn't good
He understood
Oh Jonah, Jonah, shame shame shame

He told them all what he had done
Then Jonah said to everyone
The stormy sea
Is 'cause of me
There's no place left for me to run

They threw old Jonah off, ker-plunk!
Into the sea, he quickly sunk
Then Jonah saw
With open jaw
The biggest fish you ever thunk!

Into it's belly Jonah went
He should have gone where he was sent
Yes it was clear
No question here
What God told Jonah, He sure meant

Now Jonah thought that he was dead
With seaweed wrapped around his head
He prayed and prayed
But there he stayed
Three days and nights, the Bible said

What do you do inside a whale
When you can see from head to tail?
You figure out
Without a doubt
You'd rather be inside a jail

When Jonah's heart could understand
That doing right is God's command
God told the fish
And in a swish
It spit old Jonah out on land

You do not have to take a dive
If troubles swallow you alive
When things seem bad
Do not be sad
Just turn to God and you'll survive

Do you know why we choose to do the wrong thing sometimes? It's because of something called original sin. In the Garden of Eden, when Adam and Eve ate the fruit from the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil, it made them know the difference between right and wrong. But before that, they didn't know the difference.

You can read the story right now!

Genesis, Chapter 3

1 Now the serpent was more subtil [clever, crafty, sneaky] than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?
2 And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden:
3 But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die.
4 And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die:
5 For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.
6 And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.
7 And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons.
8 And they heard the voice of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God amongst the trees of the garden.
9 And the Lord God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where art thou?
10 And he said, I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself.
11 And He [God] said, Who told thee that thou wast naked? Hast thou eaten of the tree, whereof I commanded thee that thou shouldest not eat?
12 And the man said, The woman whom thou gavest to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat.
13 And the Lord God said unto the woman, What is this that thou hast done? And the woman said, The serpent beguiled me, and I did eat.
14 And the Lord God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life:
15 And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.
16 Unto the woman He said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee.
17 And unto Adam He said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life;
18 Thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee; and thou shalt eat the herb of the field;
19 In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.
20 And Adam called his wife's name Eve; because she was the mother of all living.
21 Unto Adam also and to his wife did the Lord God make coats of skins, and clothed them.
22 And the Lord God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the Tree of Life, and eat, and live for ever:
23 Therefore the Lord God sent him forth from the Garden of Eden, to till the ground from whence he was taken.
24 So He drove out the man; and He placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubims, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of [to protect] the Tree of Life.

Think of it this way ... A baby doesn't know the difference between right and wrong, so if they do something that isn't right, it's not a sin because they don't know any better. But once they learn right and wrong, and choose to do wrong, then it becomes sin.

You've certainly learned a lot today! Be sure and read what's in the Step #1 Box below.
