Pharisees - Good or evil?

Pharisee Bible Story Explained

Who is a Pharisee in the Bible Study

You may find it surprising that Pharisees are not mentioned in the Old Testament. In fact, it is said that the sect of the Pharisees didn't come about until about 160 years before Christ. That is not to say that some folks didn't act like Pharisees back then, it's just that their 'brand' didn't become ... Let's say an 'organized group' that people called by name until then.

The Pharisees were Jewish religious leaders in Jesus' day. He wasn't particularly fond of the behavior of the Pharisees, even though there were some that followed Him. Besides Paul, an obvious Pharisee before his conversion, there were three specifically mentioned in scripture.

  • Nicodemus, in John 3:1-3, secretly approached Jesus and inquired about being born again. Also you can read in John 19:39, he paid for the myrrh and aloes for the preparation of Jesus' body to be buried.
  • Joseph of Arimathea, provided the tomb Jesus was laid in. Mark 15:43 says that he was an honorable counselor which hints that he was a member of the Sanhedrin which was like the Supreme Court of Israel.
  • Manaen in Acts 13:1 was a buddy of Saul (Paul) back when. He joined the disciples after Jesus' death.

We're introduced first to the Pharisees in the Gospel of Matthew, when John the Baptist sees them attending his baptism along with some of their buddies the Sadducees:

Matthew 3:7-9

7 But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees come to his baptism, he said unto them, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come?
8 Bring forth therefore fruits meet for repentance:
9 And think not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, that God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham.

As you may suspect, the Pharisees didn't have a sparkling reputation. They approached Jesus one day, questioning the manner of His disciples, and He didn't hesitate to set things straight for them:

Mark 7:1-23

1 Then came together unto Him the Pharisees, and certain of the scribes, which came from Jerusalem.
2 And when they saw some of His disciples eat bread with defiled, that is to say, with unwashen, hands, they found fault.
3 For the Pharisees, and all the Jews, except they wash their hands oft, eat not, holding the tradition of the elders.
4 And when they come from the market, except they wash, they eat not. And many other things there be, which they have received to hold, as the washing of cups, and pots, brasen vessels, and of tables.
5 Then the Pharisees and scribes asked Him, Why walk not thy disciples according to the tradition of the elders, but eat bread with unwashen hands?
6 He answered and said unto them, Well hath Esaias [Isaiah] prophesied of you hypocrites, as it is written, This people honoureth me with their lips, but their heart is far from me.
7 Howbeit in vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.
8 For laying aside the commandment of God, ye hold the tradition of men, as the washing of pots and cups: and many other such like things ye do.

9 And He said unto them, Full well ye reject the commandment of God, that ye may keep your own tradition.
10 For Moses said, Honour thy father and thy mother; and, Whoso curseth father or mother, let him die the death:
11 But ye say, If a man shall say to his father or mother, It is Corban, that is to say, a gift, by whatsoever thou mightest be profited by me; he shall be free.
12 And ye suffer him no more to do ought for his father or his mother;
13 Making the Word of God of none effect through your tradition, which ye have delivered: and many such like things do ye.

14 And when He had called all the people unto Him, He said unto them, Hearken unto me every one of you, and understand:
15 There is nothing from without a man, that entering into him can defile him: but the things which come out of him, those are they that defile the man.
16 If any man have ears to hear, let him hear.

17 And when He was entered into the house [away] from the people, His disciples asked Him concerning the parable.
18 And He saith unto them, Are ye so without understanding also? Do ye not perceive, that whatsoever thing from without entereth into the man, it cannot defile him;
19 Because it entereth not into his heart, but into the belly, and goeth out into the draught, purging all meats?

20 And He said, That which cometh out of the man, that defileth the man.
21 For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders,
22 Thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness:
23 All these evil things come from within, and defile the man.

So, just to understand what we just read, the Pharisees were saying to Jesus, hey Man, your fellas are eating with defiled (unwashed) hands. Now, realize that Jesus is all about the heart as He explains to the Pharisees that they should worry more about cleaning up their act, and less about their fingernails.

That doesn't mean you shouldn't wash your hands before you eat, if you can't, you can't. And Jesus didn't take kindly to the Pharisees judging His disciples about it.

Hypocrites was one of Jesus' pet names for the Pharisees. He says, Isaiah was right about you hypocrites, you act like you respect God, but you follow the rules made by men instead of God's rules. He gives them an example: Moses said, honor your father and mother, but you let your children get away with saying that you should honor them.

In Verses 21 and 22 He points out to His disciples, the things that really defile a person, and they originate from within the heart.

Next in our study of what a Pharisee is, we find in the Gospel of Luke, after Jesus had been healing folks and even raised a man from the dead, that John the Baptist sent some of his close followers to Jesus to ask if He was the Messiah that the world had been waiting for:

Luke 7:19-29

19 And John calling unto him two of his disciples sent them to Jesus, saying, Art thou He that should come? or look we for another?
20 When the men were come unto Him, they said, John Baptist hath sent us unto thee, saying, Art thou He that should come? or look we for another?
21 And in that same hour He cured many of their infirmities and plagues, and of evil spirits; and unto many that were blind He gave sight.
22 Then Jesus answering said unto them, Go your way, and tell John what things ye have seen and heard; how that the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, to the poor the gospel is preached.
23 And blessed is he, whosoever shall not be offended in me.

24 And when the messengers of John were departed, He began to speak unto the people concerning John, What went ye out into the wilderness for to see? A reed shaken with the wind?
25 But what went ye out for to see? A man clothed in soft raiment? Behold, they which are gorgeously apparelled, and live delicately, are in kings' courts.
26 But what went ye out for to see? A prophet? Yea, I say unto you, and much more than a prophet.
27 This is he, of whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee.
28 For I say unto you, Among those that are born of women there is not a greater prophet than John the Baptist: but he that is least in the Kingdom of God is greater than he.

29 And all the people that heard Him, and the publicans, justified God, being baptized with the baptism of John.

Take note here that John the Baptist preached about Jesus. It was his whole gig. He was the forerunner spoken of in Malachi 3:1. The Pharisees who were so devout, should have recognized this. Jeepers ... the publicans even accepted it.

Luke 7:30

30 But the Pharisees and lawyers rejected the counsel of God against themselves, being not baptized of him.

The Pharisees, known for their knowledge of scripture, rejected John's message of repentance for salvation. Had they listened, everlasting life was theirs, but they would not comply because the message was against them, they were proud, stubborn, arrogant and didn't believe John. It was their undoing. They said no to the grace of God, excluded their own selves and hindered others, standing in their way. It was their own ruin.

Jesus continues, trying to find something absurd enough to compare them to:

Luke 7:31-35

31 And the Lord said, Whereunto then shall I liken the men of this generation? and to what are they like?
32 They are like unto children sitting in the marketplace, and calling one to another, and saying, We have piped unto you, and ye have not danced; we have mourned to you, and ye have not wept.
33 For John the Baptist came neither eating bread nor drinking wine; and ye say, He hath a devil.
34 The Son of man is come eating and drinking; and ye say, Behold a gluttonous man, and a winebibber, a friend of publicans and sinners!
35 But wisdom is justified of all her children.

Wisdom is shown to be right by all her children ... That is by the lifestyle, moral character, and good deeds of those who follow wisdom.

After this, Jesus, full of grace, accepts an invitation by one of the Pharisees to join him for dinner.

Luke 7:36-50

36 And one of the Pharisees desired Him that He would eat with him. And He went into the Pharisee's house, and sat down to meat.
37 And, behold, a woman in the city, which was a sinner, when she knew that Jesus sat at meat in the Pharisee's house, brought an alabaster box of ointment,
38 And stood at His feet behind Him weeping, and began to wash His feet with tears, and did wipe them with the hairs of her head, and kissed His feet, and anointed them with the ointment.
39 Now when the Pharisee which had bidden Him saw it, he spake within himself, saying, This man, if He were a prophet, would have known who and what manner of woman this is that toucheth Him: for she is a sinner.
40 And Jesus answering said unto him, Simon, I have somewhat to say unto thee. And he saith, Master, say on.
41 There was a certain creditor which had two debtors: the one owed five hundred pence, and the other fifty.
42 And when they had nothing to pay, he frankly forgave them both. Tell me therefore, which of them will love him most?
43 Simon answered and said, I suppose that he, to whom he forgave most. And he said unto him, Thou hast rightly judged.

44 And He turned to the woman, and said unto Simon, Seest thou this woman? I entered into thine house, thou gavest me no water for my feet: but she hath washed my feet with tears, and wiped them with the hairs of her head.
45 Thou gavest me no kiss: but this woman since the time I came in hath not ceased to kiss my feet.
46 My head with oil thou didst not anoint: but this woman hath anointed my feet with ointment.
47 Wherefore I say unto thee, Her sins, which are many, are forgiven; for she loved much: but to whom little is forgiven, the same loveth little.

48 And He said unto her, Thy sins are forgiven.
49 And they that sat at meat with Him began to say within themselves, Who is this that forgiveth sins also?
50 And He said to the woman, Thy faith hath saved thee; go in peace.

You have to love that story. Especially if you are human. Because we have all sinned. And continue to sin, even when we try, try, try to do better. (And no, Jesus doesn't want you to sin more so that you will love Him more.)

Next in our study, we find out that the Pharisees were a covetous lot, but they didn't like that Jesus said you can't serve God and money. They took offense to that and expressed contempt for the insinuation.

Luke 16:13-17

13 No servant can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.
14 And the Pharisees also, who were covetous, heard all these things: and they derided Him.
15 And He said unto them, Ye are they which justify yourselves before men; but God knoweth your hearts: for that which is highly esteemed among men is abomination in the sight of God.
16 The law and the prophets were until John: since that time the Kingdom of God is preached, and every man presseth into it.
17 And it is easier for Heaven and earth to pass, than one tittle of the law to fail.

Concerning Verse 16, take a look at how Matthew Henry explains:

Some give this sense of it; they derided Christ or speaking in contempt of riches, for, thought they, were there not many promises of riches and other temporal good things in the law and the prophets? And were not many of the best of God’s servants very rich, as Abraham and David? "It is true," saith Christ, "so it was, but now that the kingdom of God is begun to be preached things take a new turn; now blessed are the poor, and the mourners, and the persecuted." The Pharisees, to requite the people for their high opinion of them, allowed them in a cheap, easy, formal religion. "But," saith Christ, "now that the gospel is preached the eyes of the people are opened, and as they cannot now have a veneration for the Pharisees, as they have had, so they cannot content themselves with such an indifferency in religion as they have been trained up in, but they press with a holy violence into the kingdom of God." Note, Those that would go to heaven must take pains, must strive against the stream, must press against the crowd that are going the contrary way.

The Pharisees, in their disbelief that Jesus was truly the Messiah, thought it was a good idea to put Him to a test. Let's see how that turned out for them, shall we?

Matthew 16:1-12

1 The Pharisees also with the Sadducees came, and tempting desired Him that He would shew them a sign from Heaven.
2 He answered and said unto them, When it is evening, ye say, It will be fair weather: for the sky is red.
3 And in the morning, It will be foul weather to day: for the sky is red and lowering. O ye hypocrites, ye can discern the face of the sky; but can ye not discern the signs of the times?
4 A wicked and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given unto it, but the sign of the prophet Jonas.
And He left them, and departed.
5 And when His disciples were come to the other side, they had forgotten to take bread.
6 Then Jesus said unto them, Take heed and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees.
7 And they reasoned among themselves, saying, It is because we have taken no bread.
8 Which when Jesus perceived, He said unto them, O ye of little faith, why reason ye among yourselves, because ye have brought no bread?
9 Do ye not yet understand, neither remember the five loaves of the five thousand, and how many baskets ye took up?
10 Neither the seven loaves of the four thousand, and how many baskets ye took up?
11 How is it that ye do not understand that I spake it not to you concerning bread, that ye should beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees?

12 Then understood they how that He bade them not beware of the leaven of bread, but of the doctrine of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees.

And finally in our study, we have the entire Chapter 23 of the Gospel of Matthew, where Jesus does not tiptoe around the issues that He has with the Pharisees. He lays out plainly all that they should beware of. As you read through, try and identify if you possess any of the characteristics of the Pharisees that Jesus warned against, and make an effort to rid yourself of that trait.

Also, remember when we talked about Jesus pet name for the Pharisees? Keep an eye out for that in this chapter!

Matthew, Chapter 23

1 Then spake Jesus to the multitude, and to His disciples,
2 Saying, The scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses' seat:
3 All therefore whatsoever they bid you observe, that observe and do; but do not ye after their works: for they say, and do not.
4 For they bind heavy burdens and grievous to be borne, and lay them on men's shoulders; but they themselves will not move them with one of their fingers.
5 But all their works they do for to be seen of men: they make broad their phylacteries, and enlarge the borders of their garments,
6 And love the uppermost rooms at feasts, and the chief seats in the synagogues,
7 And greetings in the markets, and to be called of men, Rabbi, Rabbi.
8 But be not ye called Rabbi: for one is your Master, even Christ; and all ye are brethren.
9 And call no man your father upon the earth: for one is your Father, which is in Heaven.
10 Neither be ye called masters: for one is your Master, even Christ.
11 But he that is greatest among you shall be your servant.
12 And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased; and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted.
13 But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye shut up the Kingdom of Heaven against men: for ye neither go in yourselves, neither suffer ye them that are entering to go in.
14 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye devour widows' houses, and for a pretence make long prayer: therefore ye shall receive the greater damnation.
15 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye compass sea and land to make one proselyte, and when he is made, ye make him twofold more the child of hell than yourselves.
16 Woe unto you, ye blind guides, which say, Whosoever shall swear by the temple, it is nothing; but whosoever shall swear by the gold of the temple, he is a debtor!
17 Ye fools and blind: for whether is greater, the gold, or the temple that sanctifieth the gold?
18 And, Whosoever shall swear by the altar, it is nothing; but whosoever sweareth by the gift that is upon it, he is guilty.
19 Ye fools and blind: for whether is greater, the gift, or the altar that sanctifieth the gift?
20 Whoso therefore shall swear by the altar, sweareth by it, and by all things thereon.
21 And whoso shall swear by the temple, sweareth by it, and by him that dwelleth therein.
22 And he that shall swear by Heaven, sweareth by the throne of God, and by him that sitteth thereon.
23 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone.
24 Ye blind guides, which strain at a gnat, and swallow a camel.
25 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye make clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full of extortion and excess.
26 Thou blind Pharisee, cleanse first that which is within the cup and platter, that the outside of them may be clean also.
27 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like unto whited sepulchres, which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead men's bones, and of all uncleanness.
28 Even so ye also outwardly appear righteous unto men, but within ye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity.
29 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye build the tombs of the prophets, and garnish the sepulchres of the righteous,
30 And say, If we had been in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets.
31 Wherefore ye be witnesses unto yourselves, that ye are the children of them which killed the prophets.
32 Fill ye up then the measure of your fathers.
33 Ye serpents, ye generation of vipers, how can ye escape the damnation of hell?
34 Wherefore, behold, I send unto you prophets, and wise men, and scribes: and some of them ye shall kill and crucify; and some of them shall ye scourge in your synagogues, and persecute them from city to city:
35 That upon you may come all the righteous blood shed upon the earth, from the blood of righteous Abel unto the blood of Zacharias son of Barachias, whom ye slew between the temple and the altar.
36 Verily I say unto you, All these things shall come upon this generation.
37 O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not!
38 Behold, your house is left unto you desolate.
39 For I say unto you, Ye shall not see me henceforth, till ye shall say, Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord.

We hope you enjoyed our study of the Pharisees in the Bible. And remember, Jesus is the opposite of a Pharisee ... Fair-is-He!
