Who is Noah in the Bible Study
The Book of Genesis
Chapter 6, 7 and 8
When you think about Noah's Ark, you may think of it as a child's story ... Maybe because in modern times, many cute visual representations of Noah's Ark are commonplace.
And the short version is easy to tell, has a good moral, kids love it, and it sells a lot of baby and toddler themed merchandise.
But today, let's dig a little deeper into the Noah Bible story, explained with a little more detail of what the Bible clearly says.
First of all, the story of Noah's Ark was penned by Moses in the First Book of Moses called Genesis. It is not a fairy tale. It was a world altering event, in fact, one of the most if not THE most devastating in history ... So far.
Have you ever stopped to think, when did Moses write this story? Or the entire Pentateuch for that matter? Was it while in the wilderness those 40 years while he was tending to 600,000 stiff-necked Israelites? Was it during one of his visits to the mountaintop of Sinai with God?
Also, how did Moses know about this story? It happened some 350 years before Moses died, was it passed down from generation to generation or did God narrate it to him? Somehow, it ended up in scripture, so let's look at some of the details.
Who?
We sometimes like to do the who, what, when, where, why and how approach to devouring a Bible story, so let's talk about 'who' first. Who was Noah?
Let's research in The First Book of the Chronicles who Noah was, shall we? Noah was the son of Lamech, who was the son of Methuselah, who was the son of Henoch, who was the son of Jared, who was the son of Mahalaleel, who was the son of Kenan, who was the son of Enosh, who was the son of Sheth, who was the son of Adam. He was the 10th generation of mankind.
This also answers our question of:
When?
Let's get back to more of the 'who' detail. Who were the bad people that caused God so much anguish that He decided to send a flood to destroy them all?
The book of Jude begins to answer this question for us:
And the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, He hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day.
Peter agrees:
4 For if God spared not the angels that sinned, but cast
them down to hell, and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be
reserved unto judgment;
5 And spared not the old world, but saved Noah the eighth
person, a preacher of righteousness, bringing in the flood upon the
world of the ungodly;
This leaves one a little curious, doesn't it? Well, Noah had an ancestor named Enoch. Up there a few paragraphs ago, the author of the Chronicles spelled his name Henoch. He was the seventh generation. Today we might call him Noah's great grandpa. And Enoch was a prophet, or one that God reveals things to.
Enoch wrote about the things he was shown by God and here it is in a nutshell. God created the Sons of God or Angels as we know them. They are spiritual beings, no flesh. One of their perks, eternal life, not subject to death forever. They did not have wives. No need for a wife.
What?
So, some years before the Great Flood, the Watchers of Heaven (as Enoch refers to them), looked down on the earth and they thought the women were beautiful, so they abandoned Heaven and came down to earth to take wives. They taught the wives secret sins, and when they bare children (of the spirit from the Watchers and of flesh from the women) they became giants.
2 That the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they
were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose.
3 And the Lord said, My spirit shall not always strive
with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his days shall be an hundred
and twenty years.
4 There were giants in the earth in those days; and also
after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men,
and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were
of old, men of renown.
Wow! So, this is real! This isn't the times of David and Goliath, where we heard of a few clans of giants now and then throughout scripture. This must have been some serious population of giants. Also, think of the children of the giants, who had not a choice in what they were, they were born into it. When you're a large person, you are expected to carry the weight so to speak, because you can. This has got to be exhausting, and angering. Certainly they became mean and bad did abound.
Note also that at the end of Verse 4, they became men of renown. They were popular, famous. Matthew Henry concerning this says: "The wickedness of a people is great indeed when the most notorious sinners are men of renown among them." Aighhh.
So not only did the world have a bunch of giants walking around, which is concerning enough, but sin is abounding in them. You can understand why God decided to cut the life-span of these humans He created down from 600ish years old down to 120. (We today, through our own neglect of our health have whittled that down to about 70.)
At any rate, this begins to answer the:
When, Where and Why?
When? About the year 1656 which was about 2344 before Christ.
Where? The earth. The whole entire earth.
Why? Because of sin. Even the Angels, the Sons of God, had free will and they chose sin. Remember Satan?
And now the last question ...
How?
Enter ... The Great Flood. Again, this was a real disaster. It would make Katrina look like a light afternoon rain shower. It was horrific. The things we don't even think of must have been unbearable. The smell of the animals. The work to keep them fed and watered. The seasickness. The death. The uncertainty of the future. Oh, don't forget, you're 600 years old and you just constructed an ark ... An ARK!
We could get into so much more about this fascinating story, but this Bible Characters study is merely to introduce you to the character of Noah ... A man so great that God considered him and his family the only ones worthy to save alive during the sinful era of the giants and start things afresh.
One last question for all of you science sticklers ... How is it that Noah lived for 600 years before the Great Flood and never saw a rainbow before that? And what was that rainbow all about anyway?
