Who is the Holy Spirit? Is the Holy Spirit and God the Spirit the same entity? The Bible makes it clear that, God IS a Spirit:

John 4:24

God is a Spirit: and they that worship Him must worship him in spirit and in truth.

For us to be able to determine what the God is a Spirit meaning is as well as be able to discern if God the Spirit is the same as the Holy Spirit, we will have to take an in-depth look into the God is a Spirit Bible verse Scriptures. We will begin with the first time we are introduced to the Spirit of God:

Genesis 1:2

And the Earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.

Do you see the issue in the above Bible passage? Is "the Spirit of God" the Holy Spirit or is it God the Spirit? Again, are they even two different entities? Let's talk about the Holy Spirit first. He is a very special gift that our Lord has given to believers. The Holy Spirit can reside within you when you become a Christian:

Jesus made us a promise ...

John 14:16-21

16 And I will pray the Father, and He shall give you another Comforter, that He may abide with you for ever;
17 Even the Spirit of Truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth Him not, neither knoweth Him: but ye know Him; for He dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.
18 I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you.
19 Yet a little while, and the world seeth me no more; but ye see me: because I live, ye shall live also.
20 At that day ye shall know that I am in my Father, and ye in me, and I in you.
21 He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.

John 14:26

But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, He shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.

John 15:26-27

26 But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of Truth, which proceedeth from the Father, He shall testify of me:
27 And ye also shall bear witness, because ye have been with me from the beginning.

John 16:7

Nevertheless I tell you the Truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send Him unto you.

John 16:13-14

13 Howbeit when he, the Spirit of Truth, is come, He will guide you into all Truth: for He shall not speak of Himself; but whatsoever He shall hear, that shall He speak: and He will shew you things to come.
14 He shall glorify me: for He shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you.

God Spirit Story

Why God is a Spirit Meaning

Let's look at another Bible story and determine if it is the Holy Spirit or God the Spirit (AKA Holy Ghost) ... It was the Jewish holy day of Pentecost (50 days after the Resurrection of Jesus) and His followers were all in an upper room celebrating the Holy day. Suddenly ... The Holy Ghost, introduced himself to them in a most peculiar and mysterious manner.

Acts 2:2-4

2 And suddenly there came a sound from Heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting.
3 And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them.
4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

From that point on, the Holy Spirit has been a Comforter and intercessor between man and God for Christians. Even Today. Here is a frightening fact ... Jesus said that the only unforgivable sin is Blasphemy against the Holy Spirit. Knowing this Truth, it would be good to know how someone would commit blasphemy against the Holy Spirit, as to avoid doing so.

Matthew 12:31-32

Wherefore I say unto you, All manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men: but the blasphemy against the Holy Ghost shall not be forgiven unto men. And whosoever speaketh a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but whosoever speaketh against the Holy Ghost, it shall not be forgiven him, neither in this world, neither in the world to come.

Whoa ... What does Blasphemy against the Holy Spirit mean?

Hebrews 6:4-6

4 For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the Heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost,
5 And have tasted the good Word of God, and the powers of the world to come,
6 IF they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh and put Him to an open shame.

To do so is compared to a dog returning to his vomit.

2 Peter 2:20-22

20 For if after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, they are again entangled therein, and overcome, the latter end is worse with them than the beginning.
21 For it had been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than, after they have known it, to turn from the holy commandment delivered unto them.
22 But it is happened unto them according to the true proverb, The dog is turned to his own vomit again; and the sow that was washed to her wallowing in the mire.

Now, this does not mean that we will not fall as we sojourn down our Christian walk. We all fall down. This simply means we should not fall away and stay away. Always beware because the devil and even some religious leaders like to twist Scripture around in some vain attempt to try and condemn Christians and make them feel they have no part in God's plan or have fallen from God's Grace .

God Spirit or Holy Spirit

Why God is a Spirit Meaning

The Truth is found here ...

John 3:16-17

16 For God so Loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
17 For God sent not His Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through Him might be saved.

God Spirit Summary

God is a Spirit Meaning Is Clear

After reading that Scripture, it is obvious that our loving Father is diligently seeking ways to get us into Heaven ... Not keep us out. It is really quite simple to understand though difficult for many to believe ... You are the Temple of the Holy Spirit and the Holy Spirit lives in you. Easy enough. But the question remains ... Is God the Spirit and the Holy Spirit the same entity?

Many Christians and religious scholars believe that God is a Spirit and that the Holy Spirit is the same entity. They use Scripture found in the books of Matthew and Luke. Both used the term Spirit of God and the Holy Spirit interchangeably when describing Jesus' Baptism.

In addition, most Christians believe the Holy Spirit to be the third Person of what is known as the Trinity ... God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit.
