Use of Pictures

Using Pictures to help with organization.

Many of our children aren't verbally attentive.
Pictures make more sense to them.

We use pictures, our own snap shots as well as cartoon like images from
online graphics resources. My son's school has a parent resource room
with computer programs and laminating machines to help with this idea.

We have picture schedules showing daily routines, morning routines,
after school routines, bedtime routines, how to dress oneself, how
to bathe oneself, how to brush one's teeth, dinning manners, etc...

We use single picture cards on a key ring, in the home and when we go out, showing choices for those times when redirection is necessary. These pictures are also helpful when we are some place that is noisy and we need to get a point across. These cards have a single picture on them with the idea or point that we want our son to follow.

Sometimes we give him a "reminder card". He holds onto this to remind
him of something yet to occur or something we need him to do. Sometimes the reminder card is to ask that he "please wait". This is helpful when we are on the phone and can not attend to him at the moment. He may be given a picture of mom's car before he gets on the bus for the ride home from school. This helps to keep him calm on the bus ride home, knowing that mom will be there waiting for him ( we use other bus strategies too ).

We use picture stories, a short book of pictures, for bigger projects like
hospital visits and stays, for serial castings, for long trips in the car, etc.

I am a specialist in the effective learning and behavioral strategies for students with disabilities. Visual Communications strategies can be effectively used with any students with challenges whether they be students with disabilities or just students who have language issues. Boardmaker is a software program that is used by many speech language pathologists and behavior technicians to create picture supports for kids and adults.
I have used them for students with ADHD to help them focus on task completion and for visual schedules. They are extensively used with students on the Autism Spectrum and students who do not have adequate language skills. In classrooms, we recommend that teachers use them to identify stations, materials that are kept in closets, bins etc. and you can even use them at home to support literacy by pairing the picture symbol with the word. You can post pictures/symbols all over your house with the words printed underneath so kids can see the print as often as they look at the object. You can also make a strip that has a schedule with the symbols, for example if your child wants to watch tv, you can give him a strip with the symbols for toys and the place where they belong velcroed to the strip. It can be a sequence of chores that they must complete or a sequence of activities for example dinner and bath then tv.
There are so many ways you can use picture supports for kids. If you would like I can post some great websites to get more information and some already created boardmaker tools.

My son had to use pictures til he was about 4..he had a hard time communicating and he has high functioning autism. now you can shut him up!! :)
