Casting lots for His garments ?

Jhn 19:23 When the soldiers crucified Jesus, they took his clothes, dividing them into four shares, one for each of them, with the undergarment remaining. This garment was seamless, woven in one piece from top to bottom.

Jhn 19:24 "Let's not tear it," they said to one another. "Let's decide by lot who will get it." This happened that the scripture might be fulfilled which said, "They divided my garments among them and cast lots for my clothing."

Ok , why ?
2) What clothes are they talking about ?
3) First they're saying "Dividing them into four shares" ... (Them ? as in more than one piece to begin with ?) .. and then they're saying "Let's not tear it" ... ("it" as in one piece) ... the only 1 piece garment mentioned her is the undergarment , seamless , woven from top to bottom .
Then , comes the "One for each of them" part .

Ok , so , I'm looking at 1) Four piece garment ,... 2) One for each of them , right ? sooo , where does the "Let's not tear it" come from , and why tear it to begin with , let alone cast lots as to who will get what , each has a piece anyway right ?

Here are my thoughts that are making the only sense out of all this .
Four piece three piece two piece one , let's all just say those are version and translation discrepancies right ? The only sense out of all this , I'm getting , so they crucify Him under the pretense of calling Himself King Of the Jews , the soldiers mock Him with putting on Him , besides the Crown of Thorns , a purple robe-like rags (crown = thorns , purple robe = rags) , so the soldiers at the cross , not knowing anything what went on in town , they thought He was a real king of some sort and wanted to keep a souvenir or something for their trophy collection , who knows !

But ... here's the real boggler
This happened that the scripture might be fulfilled which said,They divided my garments among them and cast lots for my clothing."

Where is that scripture ?

hi vahn, pressed for time tonite so will be brief

I believe that it was the custom to do this with those prisoners that they put to death, take their clothing for themselves.

This is what i understand from the scripture:

They divided his clothes, but the undergarment was one piece, so this they did not want to tear but decided to cast lots to see who got that particular piece. Was gonna say maybe it was 5 pieces in total, but im just not sure, as they could have evenly divided any amount among them by tearing it, so who knows. Could have been 5 individual pieces, just doesnt make it clear to us, but the word dividing makes me think it was not, that it was less than this, but it was items that had seams that made them easy to rip apart and thereby share up evenly among the four of them.

But they didnt want to divide this particular undergarment.

When the soldiers crucified Jesus, they took his clothes, dividing them into four shares, one for each of them, with the undergarment remaining. This garment was seamless, woven in one piece from top to bottom.

"Let's not tear it," they said to one another. "Let's decide by lot who will get it."

Psalm 22:18
They part my garments among them, and cast lots upon my vesture.

Hope this helps, will be back tomorrow to see the other thoughts shared on this.
