Christianity Oasis Forum

This forum is for those souls 18 years and older who are dealing with some type of addictive behavior whether it be from alcohol, drugs, overeating, fear, worry, sex, etc. Only with help and guidance from God can we ever hope to overcome these addictions. What is impossible for us to do IS POSSIBLE with God. Friends and family of those stricken with addictions are welcome to share as this problem affects more than just the soul entangled in its web.

Myps, your sharing really blessed me... for it reminded me where I came from just a few years back, and reminded me that I could choose to go back so easily for the temptation is still there...

I'm excited for you, for in your words I hear continued growth and understanding as you seek our True Love. He is so much a part of the Oasis, but remember He is also everywhere...

Only other thing I have to say is keep it up sis! You are slowly being refined... and yes it is by your CHOICE to follow Him...

Luv ya dear soul,
Susi

Tam and mypsy *hug* *hug*

Praise God for the little victories :) cuz tho they may seem little to us, they are stepping stones that lead us to where we ultimately want to be and accomplish *Pray*

we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ

So yesterday I was listening to a sermon teaching on TBN. And the preacher said that we cant fight thoughts with thoughts. Im like, well how in the world are we supposed to? Then he said we counter thoughts with words and asked people to do the following exercise:

Count to 10 in your head and while you are doing so stop and say out loud your name.

So I did it and saw his point... That in speaking out loud the train of thought was interrupted by what was being said out loud. The thought process, counting from 1-10 stopped as I said my name.

Now im tryin to figure out why fighting thoughts with thoughts isnt as effective as i thought ;)

Although in moments of temptation I can certainly recall the mental battles fought in my head, the pull and tug, and finally the giving in.
I guess its cuz our minds can truly rationalize any action, cuz we can make up whatever the heck we want to in there to justify doing something. And in speaking out loud something, it does shut down the mind, for as long as that thing is spoken, and can refocus our thoughts unto righteous things.

So this is an area that Im gonna be trying to put effort into and see how it works when I am tempted. Speaking the Word out Loud.

Stopping thoughts

Postby Wonderfilled One » Sun Feb 14, 2010 8:45 pm

This is a great method, and it works because our minds can only process one thought at any one time. Now I know that some of you are thinking..'wait a min., I can multi-task with the best of em.' Well the truth is that when it comes to multi-tasking, we actually switch back and forth between thoughts, and don't have more than one at a time. And the way God has wired us, women can switch much faster than men.
I'm glad to see you have found, and shared, another method for us to use! GBU Liz
