God is my Defender
I lost my job in November of 2008. I had been working as a night auditor at this hotel for almost nine years when I was let go by a rather underhanded ploy my boss pulled.
Now when this first happened I went home and immediately spoke to God about it. I started with something like this, "Lord, I went to work everyday. I paid my bills and I never shirked my responsibilities..." And then suddenly, like a hand in front of my face, I was stopped. A realization suddenly came over me that my prayer to God about my job had too many "I's" in it. I was basing everything on what I did.
In my mind I did a complete 360 and instead started speaking about who God is - "Lord, you allowed me to have this job. You are my rock and my salvation, my ever present help in times of trouble. Your Word is Your bond; You are faithful to what You say concerning us."
Instead of speaking about what I did I started speaking about who God is. I had this job because He allowed me to have it, and so now that it was over there had to be some reason and it wasn't based on anything I had done. So I prayed and asked God to come to my defense, in this matter, to allow me to have unemployment so that I could pay those I owed.
I went on the computer and filed for unemployment during the last week of November. After I did this I learned that because the UIA was so backlogged with applicants that it would be six weeks before I knew anything. I waited. And while I waited I continued to trust in who God is - my Defender. Every time a negative thought would come I would push it away and say, "I trust in You, Lord; You will provide for me."
During those six weeks the UIA sent me a form to fill out, which I did, describing what had led to my termination. I wrote the whole incident down and then mailed it back to them. My bills came in and when they did I placed them in my bible over Psalm 119, saying "Thank You, Lord, for allowing me to pay those I owe."
By the seventh week I wanted to know what was going on so I called the UIA. The lady I spoke with informed me that the hotel had sent in their own letter - a 19 page letter - describing why I didn't deserve unemployment. I was aghast, and the lady even laughed and said, "Yeah, it seems like overkill to me." The lady told me that the board was still deciding my case, and so when I hung up from her I got on the floor and asked the Lord to sway the hearts of the board in my favor. And again, to be my Defender.
In just a couple days I found out I had my unemployment. The board had ruled in my favor because they found no justifiable cause for my termination. God had come to my defense. It wasn't until after this happened that I found the following scriptures...
I will say of the LORD, "He is my refuge and my fortress; My God, in Him I will trust." Surely He shall deliver you from the snare of the fowler And from the perilous pestilence. He shall cover you with His feathers, And under His wings you shall take refuge; His truth shall be your shield and buckler. - Psalm 91:2-4
"But I will sing of Your power; Yes, I will sing aloud of Your mercy in the morning; For You have been my defense And refuge in the day of my trouble. To You, O my Strength, I will sing praises; For God is my defense, My God of mercy." - Psalm 59:16-17
Stir up Yourself, and awake to my vindication, To my cause, my God and my Lord. Vindicate me, O LORD my God, according to Your righteousness; And let them not rejoice over me. Let them not say in their hearts, "Ah, so we would have it!" Let them not say, "We have swallowed him up." - Psalm 35:23-25
God is a Man of His Word. I thank You, Father, for allowing me to have unemployment and for teaching me about trusting in who You are, not in anything I do.
Amen.
"That I may proclaim with the voice of thanksgiving, And tell of all Your wondrous works." - Psalm 26:7
