1 Peter 2:4-10

4 To whom coming, as unto a living stone, disallowed indeed of men, but chosen of God, and precious,
5 Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.
6 Wherefore also it is contained in the scripture, Behold, I lay in Sion a chief corner stone, elect, precious: and he that believeth on him shall not be confounded.
7 Unto you therefore which believe he is precious: but unto them which be disobedient, the stone which the builders disallowed, the same is made the head of the corner,
8 And a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offence, even to them which stumble at the word, being disobedient: whereunto also they were appointed.
9 But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvelous light:
10 Which in time past were not a people, but are now the people of God: which had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy.



There is one body and one Spirit – just as you were called to one hope when you were called – one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all. Ephesians 4:4-6 (NIV)




I happened to walk past the federal courthouse at a time when many people were leaving the building. All were smiling and many were dressed in special clothes. Some paused in the windy, chilly weather to have pictures taken with their champions.

I soon discovered the source of their joy. These people had just become U.S. citizens and had received the documents that assured them the rights, security, and privileges of this citizenship. People from many different countries now share one allegiance. From many other cultures, they now share one homeland. From many other backgrounds they came – seeking a better life for themselves and their children.

The family of believers and the church offer a similar unity. We are an assembly of many but with one Lord, people who share hope for a better life now and eternal life to come.



Prayer: Dear God, thank you for Jesus, through whom we now enjoy the many benefits of being a part of your kingdom. Amen.
