Romans 8:14-17
14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.
15 For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.
16 The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:
17 And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.

You did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received a spirit of adoption. Romans 8:15 (NRSV)

My mother remarried when I was six. Even at my young age, I realized how much my new stepfather loved me. One evening shortly after my confirmation, we enjoyed a family dinner at our favorite restaurant. After the meal, my stepfather of six years reached across the table, took my hands in his, and said he would like to give me his name. He wanted to adopt me. I was thrilled. Giving up my old last name and taking on a new one made me feel accepted and loved in a new and unexpected way.

Every time I participate in Holy Communion, I am reminded of that evening and that special meal. At Communion, my heavenly Father reaches across the table, takes my hands, and reminds me that by grace alone I have received the gift of adoption from two fathers. I am the son of my father; I am a child of God.

Prayer: Loving God, your Spirit makes us more than we are on our own. You have given us a new identity in Christ. Thank you for your love. May the choices we make this day glorify and honor you. Amen.

Prayer Focus of Day: Blended Families

Thought for the Day: May whatever we do today bring honor to our family name: Christian.
