My husband and I rode the train backward from Grand Rapids to Chicago last summer. Sitting in seats that faced the rear of the train, all we could see was where we had been, not where we were going. Buildings, lakes, and trees flew by the window after we had passed them. I didn't like it. I'd rather see where I'm going.

Sometimes we may feel that way about life too--wishing we could see ahead. We'd like to know how certain situations are going to turn out, how God is going to answer our prayers. But all we can know is where we've been. That is, if it were not for faith.

The "faith chapter" of the Bible, Hebrews 11, tells us about two realities that some people in Old Testament times could see by faith. It speaks of Noah, Abraham, and Sarah, who all died in faith, "having seen [the promises] afar off." They "embraced them" and looked forward to "a better...heavenly country" (vv.13,16). Besides the promise of heaven, verse 27 tells us that by faith Moses could also see "Him who is invisible," meaning Christ.

While we don't know the outcome of today's struggles, believers in Jesus can by faith see forward to where we're going: We will have a heavenly home where we will live with Jesus forever. __Anne Cetas

***********Today's Bible Reading __ Hebrews 11:13-16,23-27*******

13 These all died in faith,
not having received the
promises, but having seen
them afar off were assured
of them, embraced them
and confessed that they
were strangers and pilgrims
on the earth. 14 For those
who say such things declare
plainly that they seek a
homeland. 15 And truly if
they had called to mind that
country from which they
had come out, they would
have had opportunity to
return. 16 But now they
desire a better, that is, a
heavenly country. Therefore
God is not ashamed to be
called their God, for He has
prepared a city for them.

23 By faith Moses, when
he was born, was hidden
three moths by his parents,
because they saw he was a
beautiful child; and they
were not afraid of the
king's command.

24 By faith Moses, when
he became of age, refused
to be called the son of
Pharaoh's daughter,

25 choosing rather to suffer
affliction with the people of
god than to enjoy the
passing pleasures of sin,

26 esteeming the reproach of
Christ greater riches than
the treasures in Egypt; for
he looked to the reward.

27 By faith he forsook
Egypt, not fearing the wrath
of the king; for he endured
as seeing Him who is
invisible.

Moses' story (vv.23-29) is found in Exodus 2-4 and Acts 7:20-
36. Moses' parents, Amram and Jochebed, were descendants of
Levi (Ex. 6:16-20; Num. 26:58-59). They were the parents of the
founding leaders of Israel (Mic. 6:4)__Moses, Aaron (prophet
and first high priest, Ex. 7:1-2; Ex. 28; 1 Sam. 12:6-8), and the
prophetess Miriam (Ex. 15:20). __SIM KAY TEE

OUR DAILY BREAD: SEEING BACKWARD

Postby Daisy50 » Thu Sep 30, 2010 10:39 pm

It's 11:27 p.m. I was just getting ready to sign offline, but was drawn towards "Our Daily Bread".

This is my 1st reply.

What an awesome way to end my evening, reading about those who had faith despite their circumstances!

I love what it says about Moses in chap. 11, v. 25 & 26 "He chose to be mistreated along with the people of God rather than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a short time. He regarded disgrace for the sake of Christ as of GREATER VALUE THAN THE TREASURES OF EGYPT, because he was looking AHEAD to his reward." (Christian Growth Study Bible-New International Version).

Amen!

Looking ahead is how I want to be. :)

Thanks for this Daily Bread. I am going to start reading it now. Wished I'd gotten into it sooner...But I will check back and read past posts you've made.....God Bless you for blessing me this evening.

Daisy :)

But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint. Isaiah 40:31
