Ephesians 5:8-14

You were once
darkness, but now you
are light in the Lord.
Walk as children of
light. __Ephesians 5:8

A friend of mine has the opportunity each winter to attend the Super Bowl as a journalist. His job is to garner interviews with Christian athletes and National Football League personnel for a faith-based radio program.

When he first started covering the big game a few years ago he grew disillusioned with the self-serving, pleasure-seeking atmosphere during Super Bowl week. "I found it to be a very dark place," he says.

One day he told a former NFL player, a Christian, how he was feeling. The athlete looked at my friend and said, "Brother, you are being light in this dark place." That comment reminded my friend why he was there, and it helped renew his excitement for serving God in a place where the light of the gospel is needed. It spurred him to shine his light.

Perhaps you work in a setting where God is not acknowledged, faith is mocked, and godless living is applauded. Maybe you feel that you are going into "a very dark place."

Why not be a light (Eph. 5:8)--through your smiles, kind words and deeds, and diligent work. Ask god to bring opportunities to share the good news of Jesus Christ. You may be the only light a co-worker sees today. __Dave Branon

Our witness for Christ is a light in a dark world

***********Today's Bible Reading __ Ephesians 5:8-14*************

8 For you were once
darkness, but now you are
light in the Lord, Walk as
children of light 9 (for the
fruit of the Spirit is in all
goodness, righteousness,
and truth), 10 finding out
what is acceptable to the
Lord. 11 And have no
fellowship with the
unfruitful works of
darkness, but rather expose
them. 12 For it is shameful
even to speak of those
things which are done by
them in secret. 13 But all
things that are exposed
are made manifest by the
light, for whatever makes
manifest is light.

14 Therefore He says:
"Awake, you who sleep,
arise from the dead, and
christ will give you light."

Light in most religions is a symbol of God and godliness. The Bible
is no exception: God is light (1 John 1:5) and the "Father of lights"
(James 1:17; Gen. 1:3-5), and in Him is no darkness at all. Jesus
is "the light of the world" (John 8:12; 9:5; 12:46), which gives
light to everyone coming into the world (John 1:9). He is the light
illuminating heaven (Rev. 21:23; 22:5). As "light in the Lord" (Eph.
5:8), believers are the light of the world (Matt. 5:14). To help us
walk as children of light (John 12:36; Eph. 5:8; 1 Thess. 5:5), God
gave us His Word which is described as "a lamp to my feet and
a light to my path" (Ps. 119:105). __SIM KAY TEE
