Did you know that the farthest point east and the farthest point west in the United States are both in Alaska? It's a geographical trick, actually. Pochnoi Point in the Aleutians is as far west as you can go and still be in the US. But if you travel a few miles farther west, you'll end up at Alaska's Amatignak Island. Because that spot is west of the 180th meridian separating the Eastern and Western Hemispheres, it is technically east of the rest of the US.

But you'll never find a spot where east and west are actually next to each other. In going west, you never "find" east. East goes on forever. West goes on forever. They never meet. You can't get farther from something than that.

What difference does this make? Just this: When you read in Scripture that your forgiven sins are separated from you "as far as the east is from the west" (Ps. 103:12), you are assured that they are an immeasurable distance away__gone forever. If that's not enough, try this: God says, "I, even I, am He who blots out your transgressions for My own sake; and I will not remember your sins" (Isa. 43:25).

Concerned about your sins? Through Jesus' death on the cross, God is able to say, "What sins?" But He will do that only if you put your faith in His Son. __Save branon

***************Today's Bible Reading __ Psalm 103:6-14***********

6 The LORD executes
righteousness and justice
for all who are oppressed.

7 He made known His ways
to Moses, His acts to the
children of Israel. 8 The
LORD is merciful and
gracious, slow to anger, and
abounding in mercy. 9 He
will not always strive with
us, nor will He keep His
anger forever. 10 He has not
dealt with us according to
our sins, nor punished us
according to our iniquities.

11 For as the heavens are
high above the earth, so
great is His mercy toward
those who fear Him; 12 as
far as the east is from the
west, so far has He removed
our transgressions from us.

13 As a father pities his
children, so the LORD pities
those who fear Him. 14 For
He knows our frame; He
remembers that we are dust.

In verse 8 of today's Bible reading, the psalmist David describes our
God with a series of powerful characteristics__merciful, gracious,
slow to anger, abounding in mercy. A nearly identical list of divine
attributes is also recorded by Moses in Exodus 34:6-7 and declared
by Jonah in Jonah 4:2. Interestingly, though the same words are used
in both texts, they are applied very differently. In Exodus, Moses
records the words as an honorable description of God's character,
but Jonah uses the words to criticize God's choice to redeem wicked
Nineveh. __Bill Crowder
